Quick Guide to Diaper Bag Essentials for 0-6 month olds

Diaper bag essentials for the first six months. What to put in your diaper bag for babies 0-6 months old!

Wondering what all you can put in the diaper bag of your little one for the quick trip to a friend’s house? There are so many things a baby might need. What to take what not to take?

Babies need a LOT OF THINGS! Believe me. Yes, they are high maintenance!!! Even for the quick trip to the mall with your baby means you carry along multiple things in the diaper bag. If you are visiting someone for half a day – you need to pack loads of things.

But, DON’T GET OVERWHELMED.

Pack smart and you will not be looking for things here and there. I am listing out a quick guide to Diaper Bag Essentials for 0-6 month olds.

But first what kind of diaper bag should you get?

I was gifted a few diaper bags on baby’s arrival– the typical Blue and pink ones that you carry on one shoulder. But they were not that useful.

When buying a diaper bag look for bags with separate compartments and that has dedicated spaces for little things. With babies – you tend to have loads of little things that you have to carry.

diaper bagI got this Diaper bag by Milestone – which came with a bottle warmer, insulated pouch for pacifier, and a diaper changing mat. My son has never used a pacifier and I used that pouch for keeping rolled up garbage bags for wrapping and throwing the diaper!

This bag also had a smaller bag attachment that I took for short visits to stores or anywhere I visited for an hour or two. When it was like half a day – I carried the entire bag.

back pack diaper bag

You can get a backpack diaper bag too. They are such lifesavers. I wonder why I didn’t get one like this!

Quick Guide to Diaper Bag Essentials for 0-6 month olds

#1 Diapers – Well it is a diaper bag after all!

Pack at least 3-4 extra diapers always. You never know how many times your baby is going to poop! No one knows that. If you use cloth diapers pack 3 at least and some liners. My son used the Pampers’ Pant style diaper for the day and Pampers Active Baby for the night and I can’t recommend these enough.

#2 Wipes, Wipes, Wipes

This is your Holy grail and never leave the house without a pack of wipes You will see you are using the wipes for more occasions than just wiping your baby’s bum! Baby wipes are one of the most important Diaper bag essentials. Bamboo fibre baby wipes are softest for baby’s skin.

#3 Diaper Changing Mat

You cannot change diaper properly without a changing mat. Mine came along with the bag. Ensure you pack a diaper mat that is easy to clean. Preferably not a cloth one that can easily get soiled or wet.

diaper changing mat

#4 Sets of Clothes

Pack at-least two extra sets of clothes when you are packing your diaper bag! Babies poop and throw up and no one has control over them!

#5 One set of top / dress for you

This is true specially if you are traveling in a car/ train/ flight. For the above reason, precisely – that throwing up can happen on you, and if you don’t pack a set of top for you, you have to stay in the soiled clothes and cursing the hell out. Yes, gross. So please pack for yourself

#6 Bottle / Formula / warm water

If your baby is taking formula, have your things in place. They can feel hungry and you might have to take out the ensemble and prepare it. I used to carry a bottle of prepared formula in that insulated bottle warmer that came along with the diaper bag!

#7 Baby Lotion / Hand sanitizer

Keep a travel-size bottle of baby lotion handy in your diaper bag essential. It can double up as a hand cream for the mom, if required. Sanitizer – I don’t need to say why!

#8 Baby Toy

If your baby has a favourite toy – pack it. Better to give it to a crying infant than not knowing how to calm him down!

I hope this quick guide to Diaper bag essentials for 0-6 month olds will help you if you have a little one.

Introduce your little ones to fruits, veggies, and whole grains gradually and they’ll turn out to be better eaters.

As a new mom, I was very scared when I was introducing solids to son. Whether he will like it, whether he will not like it, what will I do if he didn’t like fruits – were all the questions constantly cropping up in my mind.

You need to be very particular while choosing your baby food. While homemade food is fine – for a new working mom, it can be quite a task. What meals to give? What snacks to give? 7 Positive Phrases for getting kids to listen – Say these instead of commanding your child

by tinabasu April 18, 2020
written by tinabasu

Positive phrases help kids to behave well. Try these positive phrases for getting kids to listen to you. Say these instead of commanding your child.

Having a problem getting kids to listen to you? Are you becoming the “do-it-because-I-told-you-to-do-mom”? STOP RIGHT AWAY. Use these positive phrases in your parenting instead.

All moms face these parenting challenges when the kids are not listening and you have to resort to – yelling, shouting, reprimanding. Take a deep breath, calm yourself down first.

A 2 or 3-year-old will follow instructions of a parent when it is told to them in a gentle comforting way. Your impatience will make them impatient. Switch to a neutral calm tone and see the difference.

I practice positive parenting or gentle parenting whatever you want to name it. I also speak to my son as an individual and never command him unless really badly required.

When you use an encouraging tone in your voice and play with your words properly kids tend to listen better.

These positive phrases will help you in getting your kids to listen to you and get the job done.

7 Positive Phrases for getting kids to listen – Say these instead of commanding your child

positive phrases for getting kids to listen to you

#1 What did you learn / Or what will you choose?

There are two ways of communicating with a child – tell him what to do or let him choose what to do. As a gentle parent your responsibility is to facilitate him how to make the choice between good and bad.

Mistakes are good. Instead of telling negative things like “why did you do that”, “shame on you”, “you should realize your mistake” use positive phrases like “what did you learn from doing that”, “what will you choose – to mess this place or arrange the toys by color”?

#2 “You are a healthy eater”, “we’ll try something healthy”

Dealing with a picky eater? I can hear you. I have dealt with it for two long years. When you tell a child “you are a picky eater”, “you are moody eater” – they tend to take things quite literally.

Tell positive phrases like “we’ll eat something healthy instead of this snack and become strong”. “you are a healthy eater, can we eat that apple”?

#3 “Good job done”

Kids are always eager to hear appreciation for their deeds (or misdeeds also at times). Toddlers specially like to hear good words for doing their routine. Encourage them by saying “good job done – you did it all by yourself” – when they are training for toilet, if they brush their teeth on their own.

Recognize their efforts and boost their confidence with “you did this without any help” for little things like finishing their homework, packing bags or getting ready for school.

#4 “I love you”

Do not ration your hugs and kisses and ‘love yous’. Kids love these – it gives them sense of security, boosts their emotional health and gives them confidence in you.

“I love you no matter what”, “I will always love you”, “mamma will always love you” are some positive phrases that works as emotional security for kids.

#5 “Do you need help”

You want t=your child to do something on his own but he is reluctant. Instead of saying “you have to do it on your own” say things like “would you try to do this and see if you can do it”, “do you need some help”?

Kids love challenges – in most cases they will reply “I can do this”. My son is heavily influenced by Captain America (just like the mom) and he likes repeating “I can do this all day” and “I don’t need some help”. Works for me.

#6 “You are kind and gentle”, “you did this because of your hard work”

Teaching kids that hard work is important is easiest when you repeat the importance of hard work in various ways. If they do good in studies don’t just give treat and put a full stop. Reiterate and recognize their hard work. “You scored a 10/10 because of your hard work. Good job done”.

Appreciate a good deed of your child when they share toys or food with friends with “you are kind and gentle, very good”, “sharing is caring, I see you are sharing, good job”.

#7 Thank them for listening to you

Gratitude expressed is gratitude learnt. “Thank you for doing this”, “Thank you for listening to mumma” are a good way to express your gratitude and teaching kids to be humble and thankful.

8 Tips on How not to be an Obsessive Mom

by tinabasu April 18, 2020
written by tinabasu

Don’t be an obsessive mom, even kids need their freedom. These tips on How not to be an Obsessive mom will help you overcome your controlling and obsessive nature when I come to kids.

Are you an obsessive mom? Are you addicted to your child? Especially if you are a first-time mom. This needs to stop – for your own good and the child’s well-being.

When I became a mom, I swore to myself I am going to do everything to protect him, keeping him away from every minute thing – dust, germs, people! I didn’t take him out of the house for the first three months. I was having trouble breastfeeding him and I was constantly reading on Google everything possible about kids, infants, motherhood, even the tiniest things.

Then one day I just sat down and looked at myself like having a camera on me and recording my state. I was getting overwhelmed – was scared how am I going to bring him up properly. As if no one ever had a child! This happened when he was about two months old.

From then I have stopped Googling every tiny thing. I didn’t want to become some Momzilla!! The best thing you can do is stop obsessing about your child all the time!

“Let a kid, be a kid”

Baby proof your home? Okay – but don’t go to the extent of baby proofing the floor. I had placed mattresses and pillow on the sides of the beds on the floor to the take the impact if he rolls down the bed!

I didn’t have a nanny for him mostly because I always have doubts about hygiene issues of people. Without quite realizing that one day this kid will grow up and go to school and use public restrooms!

So take cue from me, don’t get obsessive. If I can stop being an obsessive mom and turn into a chill mom – so can you.

Here are 8 tips on how not to be an obsessive mom

how not to be an obsessive mom

#1 No need to sanitize all toys all the time

Well, this isn’t true for the current COVID-19 situation, probably you should sanitize everything now. But don’t get so obsessive about germs and hygiene that you are cleaning and sanitizing the toys every time your child plays with it.

If your baby is an infant – you must sanitize (clean with hot water) all kinds of toys that he can be putting in his mouth – pacifiers, chewable toys, those toy keys etc.

If you are a mom of a toddler – please go easy with sanitizing every inch of the room.

#2 Let the child enjoy his freedom

Don’t get scared if your child is crawling for the first time or trying to climb up the TV table. Of course, take care that the TV is secured and in no way can fall on the child but let him explore. If you tr to stop this exploring phase, they will find another way to explore. This is a natural phase, nature inquisitiveness in children and can’t be stopped.

#3 Teach yourself to be okay with the mess

When you have a toddler in the home, there will be mess – deal with it. No need to shift gear to clean the house all the time. If you have toys on the floor in your kid’s room it’s okay.

Don’t stop a child from playing with sands and rocks, water. Toddlers love sensory play. Let them explore, let their outfits get messy at times.

#4 Don’t be those Pageant moms

If you wanted to be a beauty queen, but couldn’t – don’t force your child! Your child doesn’t need to participate and win every academic competition, every sport competition, every art or dance competition. Let them be kids. Let them explore and find their interest. Don’t rob them off their innocence.

There will be enough competition in life, they don’t have to start the rat race at 2 or 3!

Some moms take this to the next level. This pageant mom dressing her daughter as Julia Robert’s call girl character from Pretty Woman is upsetting and feels like a psychological problem to me.

#5 No need to brag about your child at every social gathering

For you,  your child is best. Okay. It doesn’t need to be repeated like a record at every social gathering, in front of every other mom. All kids are special. Let them enjoy their childhood. They are not modes of competition between moms!

“Did I tell you my son won so and so?”

“Did I tell you my daughter has read up all kinds of books at 3?”
“Did I tell you, my son can speak French, German, English, Finnish at 4?”

PLEASE STOP

#6 Don’t get carried away with “what others will think”

Most Indian parents have this statement while parenting their children “log kya kahenge” (what will people think). I mean who even cares? People will say whatever – how does that matter to you or your child. So if your teenage son wants to do a summer internship – its good – let him do it!

It is your child that matters not who admired him and said good/bad about him that matters.

#7 Don’t be a controlling mom

Some moms are way too controlling and obsessive. So much so that it scares the child every time they think of their parents. Is that what you want your child to think of you as they grow up? Let them choose, let them voice their opinions, consider them individuals. Children are not puppets.

#8 Don’t be a bribing mom

“Do this I will give you that”. This is the worst way of parenting. Don’t be the bribing mom. You are teaching your child bribing, demanding is good!

No it is not.

I hope these tips on How not to be an Obsessive mom will help you overcome your challenges. If these can help me, it can help you too.

Incredibly Helpful Newborn Hacks for New Moms

These Incredibly Helpful Newborn Hacks for New Moms will see you through the first few months of your baby’s arrival.

Having a new-born is beautiful yet stressful and exhausting for any new mom. To ease out the stress plan well and choose well. These Incredibly Helpful Newborn Hacks for New Moms will help you in planning what to get for your baby’s nursery, what to avoid and how to make the journey smoother.

Incredibly Helpful Newborn Hacks for New Moms

newborn hacks for new moms

#1 Have baby wipes everywhere –

Can’t tell you how versatile and incredibly helpful these wipes are for newborns. You can get organic bamboo fibered wipes for the baby. They are much more gentle than the polyester ones.

#2 Use swaddle with Velcro or stick-on

Swaddling a baby right is an art when you can’t master the art quickly, use a swaddle with a Velcro or stick-on tapes to keep it in its place easily.

#3 Use a humidifier in the room

It keeps the blocked nose way cleaner.

#4 Any machine that makes noise

Infants love noise! Believe it or not, they like noise – the most bizarre ones. I had one of those toys that made soothing noise. Babies like all kinds of noise – noisy fan, noisy vacuum cleaner etc.

#5 Use a Baby carrier

Babies love to be held close to the mom. Keep your hands free with the use of a baby carrier. Get an ergonomic baby carrier or use a baby wrap. Put the baby in the carrier and go about your daily work. They love being this snug.

#6 Trim nails while the baby is sleeping

Quite self-explanatory, right? To reduce their hand movement and giving you the shock of your life, trim nails with baby nail scissors when they are sleeping.

#7 Sleep when the baby sleeps

Don’t be the sleep-deprived mom. Sleep when the baby sleeps. Take at least two naps in the day.

#8 keep a water bottle next to your bed/ feeding nook

If you are breastfeeding – please stay hydrated. A lot of water content is going away. Place a water bottle next to the bed or the feeding chair and drink while you are feeding. Plain water works best.

#9 make a dedicated diaper changing station

Keep everything stocked in this diaper changing station – diapers, wipes, powders, clothes. It will be great if this caddy is on wheels you can take it at any room of your house.

#10 Take help

If the husband wants to help, take the help. If your mom/ mom-in-law or any family members want to help take the help. Utilize that time to rest, self-care or just be on your own.

Mom Self-Care routine that is quick

by tinabasu April 16, 2020
written by tinabasu

A mom self-care routine is important. Moms are busy but with planning a good self-care routine that is quick and easy can be incorporated in your daily routine.

All moms need some TLC and time out. If you are not practicing self-care you will be demotivated, grumpy and could be depressed. So make self care A MUST in your routine even if you are tired and feeling the world is against you!

What is Self-Care?

Self-care is any activity that you do in order to improve your physical, mental, and emotional health.

So it’s not always doing a mani-pedi, little things like talking to friends, spending 5 minutes for a hobby, watching a movie (at home) that uplifts your mood, taking a nap is also considered self-care!

Basic decluttering for Self-care

This is very important. Moms get judged without any reason ALL THE TIME. If you keep thinking about these and take these to heart you will not do any good to yourself. So declutter people and things that make you upset.

  1. Avoid people that make you unhappy – that aunty who is always telling you how she took care of her babies like a pro and you are not doing anything right. STOP her from visiting you or calling you!
  1. Avoid Googling everything under the sun related to baby – We all know the perils of too much knowledge. Internet is great for seeking knowledge but not all knowledge is required. Trust the doctor and not everything that you read on Google.
  1. Learn to say no – This is special for working from home moms. Please learn to say no. You don’t have to please everyone. Not always. Stick to your schedule and learn to differentiate between essentials and “I –can-do-this-also”.

Mom Self-Care routine that is quick

mom self care routine that are quick

Make the mom self-care routine a habit and not “ohh-I-haven’t-gotten-the-time-in-last-three-weeks”!! Mom self-care routine that is quick will help you do at least one activity a day and keep you sane. You can pick and choose.

  1. Rest well – Sleep is necessary for Physical, mental and emotional health. Try to take two naps when the baby sleeps (for moms with infants)
  1. Pick up a book – Even if you read just 5 pages a day it’s okay. Some distraction from getting overwhelmed is good.
  1. Listen to music – Music eases stress. Put on your headphones when you do house chores.
  1. A Daily CTM Skin Care – Cleansing toning moisturizing is your holy grail to skincare. Do this daily.
  1. Face mask and exfoliation – One a week take out 15 mins to exfoliate your skin and apply a face mask. If you are too tired to make a mask, apply a sheet mask.
  1. Online shopping – I don’t need to explain this!
  1. Go for a stroll – Pace the baby on pram, go for a stroll. Fresh air does wonders.
  1. Do a Mani-Pedi at home – Take out some time even during bath to apply some foot scrub and exfoliate your feet with a pumice stone.
  1. Paint your nails – Just as a continuation to the above.
  1. Make your favorite smoothie – when you want to eat junk for snack – make a healthy smoothie. You need to eat healthy and not junk.
  1. Do some art – sketching, watercolor, zentangle/ manadala art
  1. Binge-watch – Watch anything that makes you happy. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV. There’s loads of OTT content that you can watch on laptop with a headphone!
  1. Call up friends/ family – speaking to friends or your mom will make you feel nice
  1. Yoga / Aerobics/ Zumba – if you can’t find the time to go to the gym put on some work out clothes and do 30 minutes of yoga or aerobics or Zumba. There are loads of videos available on YouTube for free!
  1. Revive an old hobby – Always missed reviving an old hobby – start that now – writing, blogging, art, music, baking anything.

Make yourself happy and don’t get overwhelmed with motherhood. Make time for the mom self-care routine that is quick, do easy little things to make the difference.
