Mom Hacks to Manage Time

#1 Make a routine for everything

Kids like routines including infants. Keep things handy and prepped so that you are not looking for anything at the last time. A proper routine – feeding/changing/sleeping in case of infants will make your day smoother.

Prep the night before if you have a toddler or a pre-schooler. When your morning starts smoothly it is less likely that you will lose your sanity!

#2 Do your shopping online

Buy everything online and get them delivered at home. You save on traffic time, parking time, billing queue and fuel cost. Get kids stuff, clothes, diapers, food, and even your groceries online. If you can get the subscriptions that gives great deals like Amazon Prime or Flipkart Plus get that. They will save money and even give delivery free of charge.

#3 Do meal prep and use oven or slow cookers

If you have no help at home your best friends are slow cookers and ovens. Do meal prep for a week and keep them refrigerated. Use slow cookers and crockpots for cooking so that you don’t have to be constantly standing in the kitchen. Oven and microwaves also gets your food ready faster.

Life hacks to organize home

home organization

#1 De-clutter and simplify home

Best thing to do to keep your organized is simplify things, get movable furniture and de-clutter as much as possible. There are tons of baby products and furniture that you would want to get to make the nursery or baby’s room look Pinterest worthy. Most of these are unnecessary and the child will grow out of it in less than a year.

I bought a baby high chair worth 10K which could be used as a chair later when the child grown up. My son used it for 4 months max and he never liked being buckled up!! It is just lying there like a junk.

#2 Use Hidden Storage and organizing bags

kids have toys – tonnes of toys. Use organizing bags and hidden storage places to keep the toys organized. I use container boxes for Legos. Legos just get on my nerves. It is now on my son’s list of chores to put the Legos away in the respective boxes after he’s done playing

#3 Get your preschooler to clean up toys

I encourage my 4-year-old to clean up his own toys after he’s done playing. It is a good habit to teach. SO it’s his job to keep puzzle pieces in respective boxes. In your child’s room demarcate places for each activities – art supplies, puzzles, cars, activity toys, books – so that the child knows what goes where and can keep those back without asking for instructions.

Parenting Tips for Moms of infants and toddlers

#1 Use silicone bibs or protective aprons to save clothes

Feeding a 7-month old is a big task. Use silicone bibs instead of cloth bibs to protect the clothes. Silicone bibs are easier to clean than cloth ones. It will make the job easier and faster.

#2 Put a hook behind the high chair and hang bibs

If you have a high chair put a stick-on hook at the back, hang bibs (silicone / cloth). You won’t be looking for a big at the last minute.

#3 Use a mattress protector while toilet training

Kids need time for toilet training and when you are keeping them diaper-free at nights you must use a waterproof mattress protector or dry sheet to keep night wetting troubles at bay.

#4 Keep Baby Wipes Handy

I can’t tell you how versatile a baby wipe is. My son is 4 I still keep a Baby wipe pack in my handbag – ALWAYS.  You can clean almost everything including toys when you are outside.

#5 Clip your baby’s nails when they sleep

Clipping an infant’s nail is such a delicate task. Clip them when they are asleep to save you from the anxiety.

Aren’t these life hacks & parenting tips useful, moms? Keep your sanity intact with these mom hacks and thank me later.

Fun Questions to really Know your Kids | Questions to ask your kids

Questions to ask your kids – Engage them in conversation with fun questions to really know your kids.

As your child grows up the interactions with parents become lesser. Much against your wishes a tween tends to interact with a parent way lesser than a small child of six! I will be dreading that phase!

The problem is not with your child – communication is a two-way channel. Interacting with elder kids is very different from a 4th grader! You need to have the right questions to ask your kids!

School is a big part of kids of this age and forming questions around their school, classes, friends, sports keep the conversation going. It is good not to be the controlling mom who tries to keep a note about every second of her child’s life.

Elder kids need some freedom too. But that doesn’t mean, you will not want to know about what they are thinking, whether they are going through any trouble etc. This is also the time when they are developing infatuations for the opposite gender – which they wouldn’t want to share typically.

Here are a few fun questions that you might ask to really know your kids well – questions to ask your kids

Fun Questions to really Know your Kids | Questions to ask your kids

  1. Did you make a new friend? What is his/ her name?
  2. What is the silliest thing that happened in school today?
  3. Where would you want to go for a vacation, if you wanted to go with your friends?
  4. Where would you want to live when you grow up?
  5. Do you like your family? Is there anything you would want to change?
  6. Is there anyone who joined your class today?
  7. What is the funniest thing that happened at soccer class?
  8. What is the funniest thing that you did at the last sleep over/ play date?
  9. Did you learn anything new today that you liked?
  10. What is the subject you find most difficult in school? If you need help you can always ask.
  11. Would you like to go for a movie with mom?
  12. Did anyone upset you today? Would you like to share?
  13. What is the wildest dream you have which you wish it turned true?
  14. How are your friends doing?
  15. Would you like to call a few friends for dinner over the weekend?
  16. Which is the one place you would want to travel to when you are a grown-up?
  17. Did you help anyone today? How?
  18. Did you get angry at anyone? How did you manage to control it?
  19. Did anyone at school try to bully you? Did you talk to the teacher? Do you want to talk to me?
  20. Is there anything you want to know from my younger days?

The questions to ask your kids need to be tactfully placed. Keep the questions open-ended, ask them to engage in a conversation about their life. These fun questions might help you to keep the conversation going and know your kids well.

5 Indian Values You Must Instill in your child

by tinabasu April 10, 2020
written by tinabasu

Indian Values you must instill in your child – respect, honesty, respect for religions and scriptures and many more.

Indian Values are popular in across the world. While we are constantly trying to become like the west and drifting away from our Indian values, there are many cultures across the world who still respect our values. But there are some Indian Values you must instill in your child because it is good to be ethically motivated, and have the ability to distinguish the good from bad.

The few fundamentals of Indian Values are – Tyaga (renunciation), Dana (charity), Nishtha (dedication), Satya (truth), Ahimsa (non-violence), Upeksha (forbearance). A lot of it can be practiced. But what are the basic Indian values you can teach kids?

Why do I want to Instill Indian Values in my child?

As a child, I was quite moved by Indian mythology. I have watched and read several mythological stories and epics – Mahabharat, Ramayan, Stories from Puraan, Prahlad, Durga Ashtami, Vishnu’s avatars etc. It was also because I was a dancer from a very young age and stories of mythology always comes up in Indian classical dance. The one thing you can always take out from any of these stories – The victory of Good over Evil.

These stories also teach you no matter what – truth wins and you must be intelligent enough to choose the good from the bad.

Let’s see what are the best Indian Values you must instill in your child.

5 Indian Values you must instill in your child

Indian Values you must instill in your child

#1 Respect for Elders

Respect is one of the best Indian values you must instill in your child. I mentioned in my earlier post, respect for others makes a child humble. Respect for elders is considered a key characteristics of a person in Indian culture. How to teach a child to respect elders? Model it in front of them. When you respect elders in your family and neighbourhood, they learn how to respect them.

indian values to instill in your child - respect

#2 Honesty – Nishta and Satya

Honesty to yourself is the most important lesson of life. Teach kids how to be honest. Teach them it is good to own up your mistakes, be honest about it and learn from the mistake. Tell them the harm of lying. No wonder it is considered – honesty is the best policy! Teach your kids to be dedicated towards hard work and be honest.

indian values to instill in your child - honesty

#3 Respect Religion – Ahimsa

Everyone has a religion and one should respect all religions. India being a secular country respects all religions. In today’s world religion is getting mixed with a lot of things. In its true sense, every religion teaches something good. A child should know how to respect each religion and its sentiments.

indian values to instill in your child - RESPECT RELIGION

#4 Family Values

Family, today is a big topic of discussion. Family system is the strongest in Indian culture, perhaps. A loving family is essential in bringing up kids. It can be nuclear; it can be a joint family. But in today’s world, many kids grow up in dysfunctional families. These kids tend to have their own dysfunctional families too. Even in hard time, it is good to teach kids that love and care for family is crucial. Underneath everything, everyone wishes for a loving and caring family – because it brings joy.

Caring for the elders in family, is fundamental in Indian ethics. You shouldn’t be needing an appointment to meet your parents or grandparents.

INDIAN FAMILY VALUES

#5 Good Education and Knowledge

Indian civilization is one of the oldest civilization is the world. Knowledge is fundamental of our culture. Knowledge doesn’t mean what you read in textbooks. While a good education is important and right of every child, gaining knowledge about the good and the bad is also imperative.

“Ekam sat vipraha, bahudha vadanti.” – Truth is one, the wise call it by various names.

So here are my two bits on Indian Values you must instill in your child. Do you do anything to instill Indian culture and values in your child? Let me know.

5 Ways to teach your child Humility | Make your child humble

by tinabasu April 9, 2020
written by tinabasu

Teach your child humility – remove entitlement, sense of undue privilege. Here are a few ways to teach your child humility and make your child humble.

Are you worried your child is already entitled and turning selfish? The child doesn’t want to share his toys and throws a tantrum if he has to share his things? The child doesn’t respect people who help you with your housework? If the answer to the above is YES, you need to teach your child humility.

I have been intentional to teach my child humility. Make your child humble, because humility is a great virtue in today’s world. This will stay along with your child in his life later on and can be one of the biggest personality traits.

Why should you make your child Humble?

Make your child humble because it will help keep a check on their egos, entitlement, and inculcate a feeling of gratitude. When you teach humility to your child you know you are bringing up well-behaved children who are confident and aware of the world around them.

5 Ways to teach your child Humility

ways to teach your child humility

#1 Admit your own mistakes and Encourage children to admit their mistakes

I repeat this often – children learn what they see. As parents, you have to be the role models. When you admit your own mistakes, kids find it is the normal way to behave. This encourages them to admit their own mistakes. It is a good thing when they can claim their own responsibilities – good or bad. Make your relation communication friendly so that your child can approach you comfortably without fear of a repercussion.

ways to teach your child humility - teach them to admit their mistakes

#2 Discourage attitude of Entitlement

One of the best ways to teach your child humility is to discourage the attitude of entitlement. Parents often have this feeling “my child will have everything”. There’s no harm if you can keep a check on yourself. Praising kids, gifting kids with material things is okay to a certain extent. If you keep repeating regularly – you are developing an attitude of entitlement and arrogance in kids. Make your children confident, not overconfident. Explain to your kids how throwing tantrums for the most expensive gifts is not a healthy attitude.

#3 Teach them to be polite with others and respect people for their work

I have taught my son to respect everyone – my house helps, the vegetable vendors, the buggy driver, the ‘Amazon uncle’. He calls everyone uncle or aunty and greets them politely. This is important from the beginning.

A child must know everyone is respectable even if they are working for you. This will make him humble instead of feeling arrogant about his/her parent’s status in society.

#4 Sharing is Caring

I often find my son offering treats and chocolates to everyone who drops by the home. If he is sharing with his friends, he will share with their parents, and almost everyone present. The other day he was having Oreos and offered me. When I said no I don’t want and thanked him for his offer, he said “sharing is caring, mum. Have one bite at least”.

Teaching your child, the virtue of sharing is important. I have been intentional in teaching him this right from the time he used to be a toddler and didn’t like if anyone touched his toys. When you keep repeating things with examples, it becomes a habit.

For example: I tell him, “if you don’t share your toys with your friends, how will you play with their toys when you to go their place, they might not share too – sharing is caring”.

This kind of has stuck on to him.

#5 Teach them to try again when they fail

One of the best ways to teach a child humility is to teach them to TRY AGAIN. There’s no problem if you fail, try again. If you fail the next time, no problem, try again.

This will teach them – confidence, resilience, grit and make them humble.

What do you think about the ways to teach your child humility? Have you tried it in your parenting journey? Let me know.

What is Gentle Parenting and how does it work?

Want to practice Gentle Parenting? Here are few tips on how Gentle Parenting works.

How were you disciplined at home when you were a child? I am sure it involved punishments, scolding – that is normal Indian parenting. Right? I got some nice smacks from my mom too (which she has forgotten, but I remember). My dad was way more gentle. But I did know my boundaries and rarely dared to cross it.

Are we to blame our parents? Not quite, because that is the kind of parenting they were accustomed to.

But dominant parenting does more harm than good. See how I told you above, I remember all the incidents, perhaps my mom doesn’t.

Let’s figure out what Gentle Parenting is – it is widely accepted today in the west and is a must-know for millennial moms.

What is Gentle Parenting?

Gentle Parenting is a new style of parenting that involves – understanding, communication and connection with the child.

Instead of bribing, rewards, punishments Gentle Parenting involves – communicating with the child and education over punishment.

Gentle parenting is peaceful and positive.

Do I practice Gentle Parenting?

Yes, I do. I practice Gentle parenting because I see it as a psychologically positive way. Our conversations are not commands they are two-way conversations that include things like:-

“Would you like to go to the toilet and finish your morning routine, before joining us for breakfast?” Instead of “Wake up. Finish your morning routine fast.  Brush your teeth properly. Come for breakfast right now.”

A partnership with your child is a much better idea.

How to practice Gentle Parenting? How does Gentle Parenting Work?

#1 Respect

One of the key rules of French Parenting is to consider your child as an individual, as another adult human. Take stock of this. When you bring respect in a relationship, it works smoother.

Instead of commanding a child, telling a child what to do – give choices. Teach them how to choose between good and bad. Don’t demand respect because you are parents. Earn that respect through your words and actions.

#2 Adjust your Expectations

These days’ parents have loads of expectations from their children. They have to excel in everything right from age 3! Please take a break and adjust your expectations according to your child’s age and development. If you are trying to teach non-age-appropriate things and if they are not following it – it is not the child’s fault! Realize that and accept that.

For example: If you want your child to be fully toilet trained by two years of his age, you are asking too much of from the child! A child should be toilet trained by age 3 because by that time they learn impulse control.

#3 Understanding

Understand your child’s behavior and understand your own behavior. One thing that parents hardly take care of is their own behavior. Kids will learn what they’ll see. Parents need to be the role model, not a person of whom the child should be scared of.

For example: When you find a child throwing a temper tantrum (mostly the twos and threes), instead of raising your voice and shouting to control it, understand what is triggering it. Don’t lose your cool and deal with it calmly. When a child sees you calm and composed, they are more likely to get over it.

The question is – you want the child to learn to shout and yelling or being calm and problem-solving?

#4 Practice Empathy

It is possible to discipline a child without yelling. Empathize with your child, like how you want anyone to empathize with you. Listen to their queries, check what is triggering a tantrum.  The best thing you can do is – put yourself in your child’s shoes! Try to think what’s going on in his mind, what is making him scared.

Let your child voice his emotions. Sometimes crying is okay. There’s no such thing that boys shouldn’t cry. Keep yourself approachable for the child.

Now you must be thinking Gentle parenting is all lenient – you give the child what he wants, you are okay with the chid being unruly, not finishing his food etc.

NO.

Gentle Parenting, in fact, does not mean permissive parenting.

You are not raising spoilt brats. You are seeking solutions, you are seeking a partnership. Gentle parenting has enough boundaries and family rules that you set with your child – but you set that in a manner that they understand.

What do you think of Gentle Parenting? Did you know how gentle parenting works? Have you tried it in your parenting journey? Let me know.
