7 Important Life Lessons Learned from my Twenties

by tinabasu September 3, 2018
written by tinabasu

Twenties are shaky and blurry and you get wise as you age. Here are 7 important life lessons learned from my twenties that will help anyone to reaffirm their believes in themselves.

Do you remember how your twenties were? I do, I was in college looking for new friends, trying to fit into the system, prioritising studies over dance (I was a classical dancer). Basically, I was not sure what I was doing rather, what I should do. These are genuine questions every twenty something has, sadly no constructive answers available for them. I have come a long way from the shaky and indecisive twenties. So why not share some important life lessons learned from those shaky and blurry twenties.

But first let me share a glimpse of my twenties.

How were my Twenties?

  1. I was in college St. Xaviers, Kolkata doing an honours on Sociology
  2. I had made great friends for life – we’re still a group & pick up from where we left
  3. Multimedia, digital art, animation became my interest and I did a diploma in multimedia too along with my honours. I was a day scholar at my college and an evening student in multimedia. Yes it was hectic!
  4. Shifted to Bangalore to do my Post Grads in Media Studies
  5. Started living away from family for the first time – in fact shared my room with someone for the first time and picked up some life skills
  6. Made another set of friends for life
  7. Internships in – Indian Express as a journalist, NGO as a health worker
  8. Joined work in one of the biggest FMCG brands one day after my final exam
  9. Yes there were relationships – let’s not go there
  10. I was 45 kgs when I landed in Bangalore.
  11. At 25 I married, started my blogs, got published in 3 books

me as a twenty yr old

Yes, it was important to share that point #10 because I don’t look like that anymore and I am pretty upset with me to give into junk food and ruining everything good I had in the body!

Now let me share some of the best life lessons learned from my twenties that I can reflect on now.

7 Important Life Lessons Learned from my Twenties

important life lessons . learned from twenties

#1 Life Lessons Learned – It doesn’t matter what others say

Pursue your dreams no matter what everyone says. Do the practical things your heart wants – because you live once, there’s no guarantee you are getting born again to do that. If you want to color your hair red, do it. You want to take a solo trip around the world – if you can fund it – do it.

This is a lesson learned hard – IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT OTHERS WILL SAY. Be good, be kind, be compassionate, but be smart, think about yourself too. Get rid of the people who have to butt into your decisions (well you can’t get rid of parents, if they are doing that though) but negotiate wisely.

#2 Life Lessons Learned – You Need to Learn to say NO

This is something I have learnt from my work place. You know when you are young and have joined work you want pleases bosses and you are willing to go at any lengths to get work done.

Working late nights

Being EXTREMELY accommodating with other team members

Skipping breakfast to attend the morning meeting

Skipping lunch to finish the presentation

Working on weekends

STOP DOING THAT.

YOU DON’T NEED TO PLEASE EVERYONE.

Appraisals are not dependant on how many lunches you have skipped, or how many weekends you have worked. No one remembers the presentation when you are 80. Take care of yourself.

#3 Life Lessons Learned – Hard Work & Smart Work

Yes, hard work pays off. But don’t just work hard – work smart. Gain new skills if you want to do good in your career. There’s no shortcut to knowledge. Keep short goals in life, like monthly goals on learning a new software. Read books on life, motivation, personal finance.

There’s always a scope for skilled people. Even if you quit your corporate job, you can be financially independent if you are skilled and know how to get work done.

smart

#4 Life Lessons Learned – More Money ≠ More Happiness

More money doesn’t mean more happiness. Everyone has that urge to EARN MORE, or get MORE MONEY to meet the lifestyle you have chosen for yourself. Material things are important, no doubt, but with money comes responsibility. Instead of having the WANT for everything, try to figure out the NEED.

Find out what makes you happy. Is it the new iPhone that makes you happiest or is it the smile of your family? Instead of focussing on MORE MONEY, try focusing on what makes you HAPPY.

#5 Life Lessons Learned – Do Mistakes, they teach you

Don’t shy away from doing mistakes. They teach you, and they teach you better than anything that’s written in the book. If you don’t do a mistake you won’t know what’s right or what could be right. It is ok to fail – in a venture, in a relationship, in professional setting. You will realize what works only when you have failed.

learn from mistakes life lessons learned

#6 Life Lessons Learned – Speak Out

Being an introvert isn’t the greatest of choices. You need to speak out, for yourself. Communication is the key for any relation – be it between partners, at work, between a husband and wife.

There are fights, arguments, disagreements in every relation. Instead of boiling that inside your head, sit down and talk it out, try to figure out where the problem lies.

#7 Life Lessons Learned – Block Toxic People from your life

There’s no dearth of toxic people who can’t stand seeing you happy. BLOCK THEM FROM YOUR LIFE. Why would you want any negativity in your life. Specially in this age of social media HIT THE BLOCK BUTTON.

I turn a straight face to people who want to spew venom. Believe me I am very good at not getting bothered by these trivial things. As long as I am honest to myself, as long as I am sure of myself I don’t get riled up easily. If I could send an emoji of GIF to the venomous people I would send this 👇

So here are some of the key life lessons learned from my twenties. The last point, however, is true for life. You never know when you will face it. But having the ability to give a straight face is better.

Do you have such life lessons that you might have learnt from a younger self? Why not share with me?

Why you should take up My Friend Alexa Challenge #MyFriendAlexa Blogging Challenge

by tinabasu August 28, 2018
written by tinabasu

My Friend Alexa Challenge is an annual blogging challenge hosted by Blogchatter which promises to improve your Alexa rank.

Are you taking up My Friend Alexa challenge happening this September? Don’t tell me you already don’t know about it! It is on its third year people and if you want to sky rocket your website’s stats and Alexa rank you should definitely check it out and participate. Go on Twitter and search with #MyFriendAlexa.  Okay, in this post let me tell you why it’s great to have a good Alexa rank and how you can improve it with the My Friend Alexa Challenge.

my friend alexa blogging challenge

Why all these statistics are important?

Blogging is not just about writing what you like or adding a few widgets in your blog and make it look pretty. Your blog’s or website’s health is measured by stats and ranks – it might sound like jargons but if you are not working on –  SEO, Domain Authority, Page Authority, Page Rank, Alexa Rank, Bounce Rates, Page Loading Time – then your website is going to be lost in the massive ecosystem of Internet and websites.

If a brand is considering you for a collaboration first thing they want is the stats report card. If you don’t have that – you have lost the collaboration right there.

First tell me what the hell is Alexa Rank!

Alexa Rank is designed to an estimate of a website popularity and is calculated from the combination of daily visitors and page views. This is calculated by the web traffic and data analysis company Alexa Internet, a subsidiary of Amazon.

What do I do to improve this Alexa Rank?

Nothing is rocket science on the internet, isn’t it? Alexa has a Global Rank and an India specific rank. Globally if you can come at the 1L mark (1 lakh range of the rank), sponsors will love you.

You gotta do two very simple things in order to improve your Alexa Rank.

  1. Get more visitors on your site
  2. Get more page views

Simple.

Now the bigger question is HOW? How do I get MORE TRAFFIC? That is not the easy part. That’s why I suggest you to join My Friend Alexa Challenge.

web traffic

What? One more Challenge? What the hell is My Friend Alexa now?

No I am not talking gibberish. It’s a totally legit 1 month long challenge that helps you to improve your Alexa Rank considerably.

My Friend Alexa is a blogging challenge hosted by Blogchatter that promises to better your Alexa Rank. I have been participating since last two years (or is it three, I forgot) and every time I have seen a huge spike in the rank. So I absolutely wait for September because – it pushes me to write and put up a new post.

I had participated from my food blog in 2016 and my Theme was #BakingWithTina. My Alexa Global rank at the beginning of the challenge was 484, 457. By the end of the challenge it went to 335, 473.

my friend alexa baking with tina

my friend alexa

Now 2016 is when I had just started my new blogs with new domains ad went self-hosted so I desperately needed a lot of traffic and better stats. And #MyFriendAlexa helped to get better.

What do you need to do for #MyFriendAlexa?

  1. Register yourself at the Blogchatter site for the challenge here.
  2. Write content – 2 posts a week on a schedule.
  3. Decides days when you want to post and stick to it
  4. Read, comment, share, network (aka inviting traffic on your page)
  5. Decide on your individual hashtag (eg. Like I Had #BakingWithTina)
  6. Install the Alexa Toolbar on your Browser
  7. Watch your stats improving

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY for registering for the contest. So you better hurry up.

Do I Really need this My Friend Alexa Challenge?

If you are not pumped about the Alexa Rank, its okay. But do you know what all I have learnt from doing the challenge twice.

  1. It puts you in a habit to write regularly (that’s juice for SEO)
  2. You read more blogs, comment on more blogs (networking)
  3. People find your blog (you get unique visitors)

These three are extremely juicy stuff for improving your total site health. So why not do it. But let me also tell you the other half of the story. CONSISTENCY is the key to being the IRON MAN (or Wonder Woman, if you wish) on internet. And I totally suck at it. Some months I am totally pumped at doing great blogging and I see my stats improving and some months I go on long trips or be a sloth and see the stats coming down. I could have easily taken my Alexa Rank to 1L and above had I been consistent with my posting and reading schedule. This year the ranks are worse on my food blog because I have been neglecting that quite a lot. But hoping My Friend Alexa Challenge will help both the blogs this year too. (My Alexa stats on the sites are pretty bad now).

Are you going to take it up too?

The Super Vitamin for your Baby’s Brain – DHA & Natural Vitamin E – #FeedIQ

by tinabasu August 23, 2018
written by tinabasu

A baby’s brain develops rapidly in the first 12 months. DHA, natural vitamin E helps in infant cognition through breastfeeding. Learn more about #FeedIQ and why you should breastfeed.

Pregnancy and motherhood is a special time in a woman’s life. A healthy pregnancy is largely dependent on good nutrition, moderate exercise and good rest. With the birth of your baby a new mother is born. As a mother all you want is the best for your baby. The single most important job of a new mom is facilitating nutrition to the baby through BREASTFEEDING. Breast milk has the super vitamin that your baby’s brain needs – DHA & Natural Vitamin E. It is through breastfeeding that you facilitate #FeedIQ.

breastmilk has DHA, natural Vitamin E needed for baby's brain development #FeedIQ

Nutrition for first six months for Baby’s Brain Development

Breastfeeding is an incomparable way to provide nutrition for an infant. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months in an infant’s life for baby’s brain development and overall growth. An infant doesn’t even require water in the first six months because breast milk has enough water and all the necessary nutrients. In another words breastmilk is the gold standard of food and nutrition for your baby.

What are the key nutrients in breast milk?

Breast milk is the perfect combination of proteins, fats, vitamins and carbohydrates that is enough for an infant.

  1. Proteins – Breast milk contains two kinds of protein – whey and casein – which have great infection protection properties.
  2. Good Fats – Long chained fatty acids present in breast milk helps in the development of eyes, brain and the nervous system.
  3. Vitamins – Breast milk contains fat soluble vitamins like Vitamins A, D, E and K.
  4. Carbohydrates – Lactose is the primary carbohydrate in breast milk. It not only provides energy but reduces the unhealthy bacteria in stomach.

Super Vitamin DHA & Natural Vitamin E in Breastmilk

Breastmilk is also rich in DHA and Natural Vitamin E that are essential nutrients for a infant’s brain development.

Some key factors that contribute towards baby’s brain development are DHA, AA, choline, taurine and lutein. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid is one of the most important brain nutrients. It is also directly influenced by the amount of DHA in a mother’s diet. However, baby’s DHA is prone to oxidation and needs protection against damage.

DHA for Child's Brain Development

Natural Vitamin E, on the hand, is a powerful anti-oxidant that prevents DHA from any oxidative damage.  DHA and Natural Vitamin E in combination together are superfoods for a baby’s brain development and infant cognition. Natural Vitamin E is found in brain regions that support visual, memory and language development.

How to #FeedIQ for Baby’s Brain Development

A mother who is also the primary caregiver feeds IQ in her child through – good nutrition, emotional bonding, interaction since infancy. When I was a new mom, I was staying with my mom for a few months and she kept no stones unturned to make me eat nutritious food. Good nutritious food is as important for a pregnant mom as is for a lactating mother.  I would be eating almonds, spinach, broccoli, fish every day.

Alpha-tocopherol, or Natural Vitamin E is found highest in lactating mothers in the first few months. It’s levels decreases with the progress of lactation. Thus it is important for the mother to have a nutritious balanced diet that helps to supply all the important nutrients that a baby needs – specially DHA and Natural Vitamin E.

Foods that are Rich in Natural Vitamin E

Taking vitamin E supplements doesn’t quite help in getting Natural Vitamin E in your system. Mothers should include foods rich in Natural Vitamin E in their diet.

  1. Vegetable oils: Sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil
  2. Leafy greens: Spinach, kailan, kangkung, broccoli.
  3. Seafood: Salmon, trout, shrimps.
  4. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds and peanuts.

foods-that-have-natural-vitamin-e

Lactating mothers need nutrient rich diets for better breastfeeding experience. Dietary supplements like SimMomIQ+ by Abbot helps in meeting all the requirements of key nutrients during pregnancy & Lactation. SimMomIQ+ is enriched with brain nutrients like DHA, Choline, Zinc, Iodine, Folic Acids.

How to read the labels for Natural Vitamin E?

When you are buying packaged food as dietary supplement read the labels for the components. I like to be an informed consumer and always read the labels. NATURAL Vitamin E is listed as ‘RRR-alpha-tocopherol’ or ‘d-alpha-tocopherol’ on food packaging and labels while synthetic vitamin E are mentioned as ‘all-rac-a-tocopheral’.

breastmilk has DHA, natural Vitamin E needed for baby's brain development #FeedIQ

Is breastfeeding easy? Breastfeeding is natural but ask me, it is not very easy for everyone. It requires, will power, practise and patience. You can get lower supply, cracked nipples, sore breasts. It is good to follow some self care tips for breastfeeding moms to make the journey easier.

As a mother, we want our babies to grow and develop as best as possible. It is important to note; breastmilk is finally derived from the food that the mother intakes. Any shortfall in nutrition of the mother will result in lack of nutrients for the baby. A good nutrient rich diet with DHA, Natural Vitamin E will help in proper growth of baby’s brain. Happy breastfeeding moms.

Self Care Sunday – One day in a week don’t forget to look after yourself. Here are 10 Self Care Tips for a lazy Sunday which you can dedicate just for yourself.

What’s a Sunday without some TLC? We all dread Monday – same old routine, same old work week – in short you are doomed! Once in a week you need to let your hair down and rejuvenate yourself and that’s why a self care Sunday is a must. These self care tips will make sure you can spend your lazy Sunday feeling pampered and full of self love.

10 SELF CARE TIPS FOR A LAZY SUNDAY – SELF CARE SUNDAY

self care sunday self care tips

#1 Turn Off your Alarm

Every day you need to wake up at a certain time because you need to get ready for work, or drop the kids to school on your way to work, or for school/ college. Sunday is the day to give your alarm a rest. Disable the alarm in your phone. Let your body rest and wake up whenever it wants to. I wish we could get warm bed in breakfast – but let’s keep it real!

#2 Have a Lazy Brunch

Now that you have woken up late, you need to treat yourself to a good meal. If you ask me, order in a good set of meal or go out for a brunch. It’s important to treat yourself.

#3 Skin TLC

Before you head out for a brunch don’t forget some TLC for your body. A quick soak in the tub, little sugar scrub for the feet, a sheet mask – all help to rejuvenate the skin from the tiredness. You can even call in your beautician and get pampered at home. Nothing better than a good spa time that too at your home!

#4 Take a Social Media Break

Let’s come to the hardest part – Social Media Break. If you don’t check your social media feed one day, it won’t be CATASTROPHIC. Believe me, stay away from the phone one day – it works as a detox sometimes. Make some conversations with your family.

#5 Binge Watch

If you are not going out for a brunch or anywhere else, indulge in some binge watching on Netflix, Amazon Prime. The best part about binge watching for me is I sleep way faster!

#6 Gardening

Gardening is so therapeutic. Don’t worry if you don’t have space, a window sill with decent sunlight is enough to start growing your green thumb. Water the plants, take a look around your garden. If you don’t feel like doing any of that, pick up a book and sit in the garden. Reading amongst the green feels nice.

Happiness held is the seed; Happiness shared is the flower. – John Harrigan . . Good Morning . . . Nature is my medicine, growing a plant is therapeutic for me. I have been growing several plants in my tiny garden. It’s not a matter of space it’s a matter of love. . . Did you know I have grown onions, tomatoes, mint, chili, fenugreek, beans, tiny potatoes, turmeric and ginger in my apartment balcony? All in containers and all from kitchen waste. . . Nature only gives. Take that love and spread some more on this World Environment Day. . . BTW can you guess which flower is this? #8 Take Rest

A self care Sunday is never over without rest. There are some Sundays when you would want to sleep in. Wake up late, eat, sleep,– repeat. Even if you don’t want to be a sloth – take enough rest.

self care sunday self care tips

#9 Get ready for the Weak Ahead

If you like your fridge organized and like to keep ingredients ready for the weak, allot sometime on a Sunday evening for meal prep. This might sound boring for a self care but it will free up a lot of time and stress on the busy weekdays.

#10 Spend Alone Time

Self care is also about self-love. Spend some alone time with a book, or go out for a stroll in the park. Get in a coffee shop and enjoy a warm latte and a piece of tea cake all by yourself. Believe me, I have even done movies alone at a theatre – because I like spending time by myself at times!

alone time- self care sunday self care tips

This Sunday follow these self care tips and spend lazing around the house loving yourself. Lazy Sunday is what sometimes I keep looking forward to. Sunday Self Care is bound to make you happy!.

10 Reasons I am Thankful to be living in India – Thankful to India, My Nation #ThankfulThursdays

written by tinabasu

Are you thankful to be living in India? on this #ThankfulThursdays tell us what India means to you and how and why are you thankful to India.

India, my country, is revered around the world for its rich and vivid history, heritage and culture. You have the world thanking India for Yoga, Ayurveda, dance forms, textile, food and many more. But what does it mean to an Indian? Are you Thankful to India? Do you value your nation for what it is? Are you Thankful to be living in India? I am. And here are 10 reason why I am thankful to India and proud of my nation. and that’s your #ThankfulThursdays prompt.

Every nation has its own troubles at current times – corruption, strange political decisions, but leaving aside all that India is a beautiful place to live in.

#ThankfulThursdays Prompt for the week

#1 Thankful to be living in India – Democracy

You are not happy with the political scene currently, or even previous to this one? Well, be thankful, you are living in a democracy and you have freedom of speech. We are not living under authoritarian regimes like North Korea or Syria. You don’t have a fear of life at every hour of the day!

#2 Thankful to be living in India – Values Family

Isn’t it wonderful that you can stay with parents without getting judged? Not that everyone these days like the idea of staying together and want to set up nuclear families – but you can always choose to be with your parents without becoming a object of shame!

#3 Thankful to be living in India – Diverse Culture

We are so different still we are one. I am not trying to sound like a moral story book. But imagine the number of festivals we get to celebrate? The highest among all the cultures of the world! These enormous amount of festivals are possible because f our diverse culture. I will not like to stay away from my country specially around September to December. No way am I missing Durga Puja, Navratri, Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Christmas, Id (for all the lovely food you get around that time).

#4 Thankful to be living in India – Kind of Help You Receive

Staying away from India? You know where I am getting at. You will not find any help ANYWHERE. No house help, mechanic, cook, driver, gardener, carpenter – the list is long – unless of course you are a mogul with a longer trail of zeros in your account! Maids can make you mad at times but you can’t live without them. Every expatriate will relate to it. Even your neighbour will help in emergency instead of just calling a helpline. Even if you are poor with life skills and adulating, its okay!

#5 Thankful to be living in India – Travel without burning a hole in pocket

India is big with 29 states and 7 union territories and every state offers amazing destinations for the travel bug in you. Places in North East, Andaman’s, Uttarkhand, Karnakataka, Tamil Nadu are no less than any foreign holiday destination. I am not even going to popular destinations like Goa, Rajasthan, Agra and all. I wish the Tourism board in India looked after the facilities for tourists a little better. But you can travel to scores of places within India WITHOUT burning a big hole in the pocket. Travel by train, buses or take your car out for a road trip – India is one of the best scenic place the world has to offer. And a big reason to be thankful to be living in India.

#6 Thankful to be living in India – Food is cheap

Unless you want dal from Bukhara every single night, food is typically cheap in India. You don’t have to survive of ramen noodles or burger or sandwich because you want to save your salary. When you stay with your family, there is no complaint over food. If you are staying alone and broke, you can still find the food streets and local eateries offering tasty food or ‘thali’ at cheap prices. Not to mention the variety of food found across the country!

#7 Thankful to be Living in India – Dress what you want

This might sound controversial given the crimes against women. Some people’s mentality is of course questionable. But hey, you are free to dress whatever you want and there’s no one dictating for a purdah, burqa etc etc. Imagine your life in Saudi Arabia or Iran. Did you Know – females have to mandatorily wear a head scarf in Iran in public – even if they are a tourist! Or the fact that females have to have a head scarf in the photo for applying visa, else it gets rejected. I am thankful to be living in India and be away from all that trouble.

#8 Thankful to be Living in India – Find cheap accommodation

India has a dense population and many migrate to the cities in search of job, making the cities crowded too. But you can still find affordable accommodation on rent. For students, travelers, tourist accommodations at every budget is available. You can get a decent paying guest accommodation in a city like Bangalore  at 5,000 INR.

#9 Thankful to be Living in India – There’s a home remedy for everything

Thanks to Ayurveda, grand mom’s tips and more you will find a home remedy a cure for most of the things. Believe me ginger tea gives relief to the throat way better than any cough syrup!

#10 Thankful to be Living in India – For Indian Army

No post on India is complete without some heartfelt gratitude towards the men in uniform. Not just the Army but the Air Force and Indian Navy. Nowhere, across our country, do they command for respect, they get it from the people because they have earned it. India is not a small country and we know how hostile the situation gets. But if we are sleeping in peace at night it’s because of the men in uniform. Salute to them.
