5 Things Parents should never say to kids – Parenting Advice

by tinabasu February 12, 2020
written by tinabasu

Things parents should never say to kids – hurtful words, comparing siblings/friends, authoritarian parenting all can leave deep scars in children’s minds. Here is some parenting advice for providing a healthy childhood.

Kids have impressionable minds. What they see and hear at home stay with them. Our words have a great impact on children. Parent’s words can make or break a child’s life. A troubled childhood smeared with hurtful words can deeply scar children.

Think about the most hurtful words you have heard as a child. Those words always live with us along with the bad memories. You will remember things like “I was better than you at your age”, “look at your brother, he is so good”, “you will do this because I said so” – you will remember these more than probably a few good praises by your parents.

When I became a mom, I had made up a mind on my parenting style. I want to bring up an individual who is well behaved, independent, and emotionally secure. My parenting style is very different from a lot of people. It is not at all like how I was brought up – well I had a lovely childhood too. I neither want to over pamper my child nor want him to go through any violence/ abuse.

Why self-control is important for parents when they speak to kids?

To think – I have faced this in my childhood so it’s okay to do the same with my child – is absolutely wrong. Creating a transparent and healthy relationship with a child is very important to make them emotionally secure. There are so many things parents should never say to kids. A child doesn’t have the wisdom to realize that anger / violence/ hurtful words might have come from a parent because of their lack of self-control or ignorance. Parents are their role models for everything. They tend to believe most things we tell them. They learn from you. You have to lead by setting an example. An emotionally healthy child is also a big responsibility of a parent.

Why negative words affect a Child’s mind?

Kids who are made to hear negative words – from parents/friends/school – develop a low self-esteem. Check the kind of language you use around kids. You neither need to make them suffer or make them feel low about themselves if they have made a mistake. Negative words instead of “teaching them a lesson” harms their self-esteem and kids end up thinking negative things about themselves.

So here is some parenting advice for all parents – toddlers, to tweens every child needs a parent who understands them and not commands them.

5 Things Parents should never say to kids – Parenting Advice

things-parents-should-never-say-to-kids

#1 “DO THIS BECAUSE I SAID SO”

Authoritarian Parents have a habit of commanding kids instead of letting them speak up. This isn’t normal. No one wants to grow up taking orders. This will make them resentful or make them fear you. It might work for a very short time, but as the kids grow up – it will not help them.

Don’t say things like – “Sit with your homework now, because I am telling you to do it”. This is a commanding statement.

What can you say – “How are you planning to do your homework on time?” Let them come up with an answer. Co-operate with kids instead of commanding or imposing.

#2 “LOOK AT YOUR BROTHER, WHY CAN’T YOU BE LIKE HIM”

I am sure most of us have heard statements like these in our childhood. DO NOT compare your kids with siblings or friends. This is one of the worst things a parent can do to a small child – break his/her confidence. They will develop an identity crisis and feel resentment and jealousy.

Imagine as an adult if your husband says “why can’t you be like his wife” (referring to a friend’s wife), would you like it? This statement alone can be ground for a bitter altercation. Imagine what would this comparison be like for a child.

What can you say – “This time your grades aren’t very good. If you try harder and give your best shot, it will improve. How are you planning to go about it? Let’s discuss together.”

Make them understand that if they do something better they will help themselves. Every child is an individual and they do not need comparisons.

#3 “I WISH I NEVER HAD KIDS, I HAVE SACRIFICED SO MUCH FOR YOU”

This is the worst thing a mom can say to her child. Parenting is a challenging task, a big responsibility, and an exhausting feeling – sometimes. Even if you are thinking such negative things in your mind, there’s no need to say that to your child.

Small children are gullible. Repeatedly if you say such things they will start feeling guilty for being born and depriving of your free lifestyle or work etc. That child will never develop self -worth.

Kids need to feel they are loved. Create that positive and healthy environment by not saying such negative words.

What can you say – “ I am so grateful you came into our lives. I love you”

things-parents-should-never-say-to-kids

#4 “YOU ARE JUST LIKE YOUR MOM/DAD”

One of the things parents should never say to kids is negative words about the spouse. Both the parents become role models for kids. Bad mouthing a mom or dad in front of the child is a very bad move. They will lose respect for both of you.

What can you say – “the toys are lying in the living room, can we try to clean it?”

Comment on their action alone and encourage them to do the chore, instead of saying things like “you are just like your dad, leaving things everywhere and I have to clean the house all the time”.

#5 “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU. I AM LEAVING AND NOT COMING BACK AGAIN”

Kids need to feel emotionally secure with parents. Saying such things will make the child feel he is in an unprotected and unsafe environment. Home is where they feel safe and free. They should be able to express freely in their homes.

I had said something very similar to my 4-year-old when I was frustrated (with too many things in my head and him nagging me for something). I had said “I am going away”. For days, my son kept telling me –“please don’t leave me and go”. I had to assure him I am not leaving anywhere without him. And I felt terrible of having said something like this to him.

Children will stop expressing themselves freely to you if they sense it will trigger a negative comment or yelling etc. etc. This can be damaging for their mental health.

What can you say – “Let us sit quietly for a min and count till 20 together”. It’s natural for a parent to be frustrated. But no need to dump that on your child. Cool off the steam – together.

things-parents-should-never-say-to-kids

I hope this parenting advice will help you in your parenting journey. Be careful of what you say around your child – because they will pick these traits up before you realize your mistake. One of the things parents should never say to kids is negative words in any form. Encourage them to do better. Make them feel secure – emotionally.

I don’t want to be that mom who scares her son. My son shouldn’t think “if I tell this to my mom, she’ll kill me”. I want to create a healthy environment for my son where he thinks “let me share this to my mom and find a solution together”.

Happy parenting people.

Until next time.

Cheers.

5 Tips on How to Wake up Early and NOT feel Tired

by tinabasu February 3, 2020
written by tinabasu

How to wake up early – it’s not difficult if you practice a good lifestyle. These tips will help you to wake up early and not feel tired.

How was your Monday morning today? Did you wake up with the first ring of your alarm? Did you have a smile when you woke up? Were you ready to face the week with a gusto? Okay, I heard you. I heard your loud NO.

Believe me, for the longest time I was a late riser. I hated waking up early. Who doesn’t like the five extra minutes of sleep in the morning? But then I decided to become a morning person because you get a lot of peaceful time to finish your work. You will understand where I am coming from if you have a small kid to manage!

What do you gain if you wake up early?

Getting up late meant less productivity for me. I used to work like a night owl because I found the timing peaceful with everyone fast asleep. And that meant I would wake up late. But once I started waking up early I realized I am not dragging myself through the day nor am I doing things in haphazard ways.

I was feeling fresh in the morning mentally and was totally not depending on coffee for the morning kick.

I am sharing a few tips so that you can wake up early and not feel tired. I have practiced these little things in my life and have benefited quite a lot. These will not only help you wake up early but will make you feel energetic, fresh and highly productive.

#1 Get Enough Sleep

If you are not getting enough sleep, you will be feeling tired. Waking up after 4 or 5 hours of sleep is not good for your body and system. Get 7-8 hours of sound sleep. So no browsing through your phone before sleep!

#2 Try to wake up before you hit the snooze button

Everyone hits the snooze button, and sometimes they keep doing repeatedly. Try to wake up before you have hit the snooze button. Make it a point to not set 5 different alarms to wake up in the morning!

#3 Drink Water first thing in the morning

Keep a glass of water on your bedside table so that you can drink it first thing in the morning, even before you have brushed your teeth. It wakes up the system.

#4 Splash water on your face

My mom used to tell me this in my childhood “wake up and splash water on your face.” Water on the skin is rejuvenating, depending on the weather splash cold or warm water on your face. Water will rejuvenate and cool down the skin.

#5 Do something that you like to start a physical activity

Instead of checking your emails or social media, in the morning, do some deep breathing exercises or do anything that you like. This can include stretching, walking, planks, yoga – anything to kick start some physical activity.

Guide to Understand Your Home’s Value

by tinabasu January 25, 2020
written by tinabasu

Your home value is based on what buyers in the market will pay for your home, but every buyer is different. For example, one family might weigh location factors like schools and jobs over the size and condition of the home. Here are some ways to understand your home’s value.

Research the Comps

To determine the value of a house, an appraiser will typically look at three comparable sales, or comps. Appraisers have access to the Multiple Listing Service, known as the MLS, which is a database of all the properties in a given area that have been listed “for sale,” are in the process of being sold (pending,) or have already sold. Obviously every home is different, with features that make the home more or less desirable.

Look Online

Use a  property value estimator to get a free estimated market value of your home or a home you are interested in. The online tool calculates the best-estimated home valuation using the millions of home records in the database. Thinking of doing improvements? Add your proposed projects and estimate how your home’s value will increase. Using Google maps, pinpoint the exact location of your home or an area you have your eyes set on.

Know the State of the Market

A good housing market means home sales and home prices tend to rise together, more or less. A good housing market itself features rises in average home sale prices along with increases in total sales numbers. Home sellers in good housing markets also tend to sell their homes at or very near their listing prices, too. Additionally, good housing markets often have tight housing inventories, with buyers competing for what homes are available. The opposite is for a poor housing market. Bad housing markets often tend to have a large number of houses for sale and few buyers for them.

Compare Similar Homes

For this process to work, you have to identify the homes most similar to yours in location, size, structure, and more. Some key factors to consider when selecting properties for comparison purposes, the number of bedrooms (exact match is best, but you shouldn’t go up or down more than one bedroom), number of bathrooms (the same logic for number of bedrooms applies to bathrooms), size (square footage, more on that below), year built, updates and condition. Take note of the surrounding areas of the house. For example, even if your house is exactly the same as every other house around, if it backs up to a waste facility, it’ll sell for less than the others. Look at everything that surrounds your house and houses similar to yours.

10 Tips on Winter Skincare routine for hand and body

by tinabasu January 22, 2020
written by tinabasu

Your Winter Skincare routine for hand and body must include steps of exfoliating and hydrating the skin with good moisturizers and cream. These 10 tips on Winter Skincare care routine for hand and body will help you maintain healthy and supple skin throughout winter.

This year winter is being harsh everywhere in India. Temperature in Kolkata dipping down to 9 is unheard of. Bangalore is relatively warmer currently. Cold dry air eaves your skin dry and itchy. We are always ready with our skincare routines for the face. We don’t forget our scrubs, serums or moisturizers. But we often skip taking care of our hands and feet!

Hands are always exposed to soaps, cleaners, and less hygienic places and we really can’t avoid them. It is important we maintain its skincare along with hygiene. Washing with warm water and soap isn’t enough. Warm water tends to dry out the skin by stripping it of its natural oils.

But there are various ways we can tackle dry skin of hand and body in winters. I am sharing with you 10 tips on winter Skincare routine for hand and body that you can follow in the winters and keep your skin soft and supple.

10 Tips on Winter Skincare routine for hand and body

  1. Limit shower time and check the temperature – too much hot water isn’t good for your skin as well as hair
  2. Use an exfoliating scrub to exfoliate and clean dry skin especially around elbows and feet
  3. Opt for gentle fragrance-free cleansers for hands –Artificial fragrance tends to irritate skin and make the skin dry. Use unscented cleansers for skin because they will not irritate the skin.
  4. Stay Hydrated and eat right – Drinking water is important even in winters
  5. Use honey pack – Mix 4 spoons of honey with 2 spoons of milk and few drops of lemon juice. This pack will moisturize, hydrate and de-tan the skin on your hands and feet.
  6. Soak feet in warm water with a slice of lime and a spoonful of salt – this will relax the feet and get rid of dry skin
  7. Use almond oil to massage skin – almond oil is known to nourish dry skin
  8. Reduce usage of hand drying machines – use tissues or towels instead
  9. Use gel-based moisturizing hand sanitizers – do not use alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  10. Use good moisturizing hand creams and body butter – Use hand creams generously after you shower and also after you wash your hands. Body butter is a great way to moisturize your skin in winters.

I have dry skin on my body and oily skin on my face. In winters my legs tend to get very dry. When you are handling kids and cleaning up after them you tend to wash your hands more. I use hand cream often after I have washed my hands in warm water because I don’t want my hand to become some sandpaper! I have been looking for a hand and body lotion that is hydrating and convenient to carry. And I found it online!

30 Positive Affirmations to take control of your life and mental health

by tinabasu January 20, 2020
written by tinabasu

Answer this, your mind controls your heart, or your heart controls your mind? Honestly, it depends and can be different for individuals. But I know you need to feed your mind good things to keep your mental health happy and healthy. Here are some positive affirmations to take control of your life.

But first, why is Mental Health Important?

When you are in between work and dealing with your rushed routines of life you don’t get the chance to think about life, mental health or happiness. Happiness is not your new Birkin bag, it’s not a fancy holiday. It is your state of mind. When you are in a good mood you radiate positivity, when you are in a bad mood things feel negative.

It happens with me, all the time. Sometimes when I am sitting idle my mind is just clouded with questions – how am I going to do this, how will this be done, yadda yadda… Unless my mind is clear of doubts (self-doubts are a big part of it) unless I can keep myself happy how am I going to even function?

So keeping your mind happy has its own benefits. Keep those negative thoughts away. Positive affirmations are a great way to feed something good to your mind. Saying out positive affirmations really helps to change the state of your mind. I practice them at times and I have seen the instant mood uplifting effect.

I am sharing a list of positive affirmations that you can try out when you find things not going your way. Take control of your life and mental health by staying strong in your head.

Positive Affirmations to Say to YOURSELF

  1. I am strong – I will not break
  2. I am filled with positivity
  3. I am in charge of my self-worth
  4. I love myself
  5. I believe in my abilities
  6. I can do this
  7. I will do this
  8. I love myself for who I am
  9. I don’t need to change myself for anyone
  10. I have overcome difficulties I can overcome again

Positive Affirmations for CHALLENGES

  1. This will pass
  2. I am open to learning
  3. My strength is greater than my struggles
  4. I will let go of anything that doesn’t bring me happiness
  5. This will work out, this is not the end
  6. This experience will teach me – I will earn from mistakes
  7. There will be many more opportunities
  8. I am going to give my best
  9. I know my power
  10. I was not made to give up

Daily Affirmations you should practice

  1. I am grateful for what I have
  2. I can reach my goal
  3. I will be positive
  4. I can reach any goal
  5. I can take control of my life
  6. I will love myself and take care of myself
  7. I will be happy and healthy
  8. I will not live in fear
  9. I am enough
  10. I am complete

Hopefully, these positive affirmations and daily affirmations will help you in changing the state of your mind. Being self-assured is very important. You will teach someone else better. Make it a daily habit to say aloud some of these daily affirmations. The brain registers it better. If you practice journaling or write a diary, sometimes writing these things down regularly makes a lot of sense.

I have made several lifestyle changes in the last few years and I find them beneficial. Just like how your body transformation doesn’t happen overnight, you need to work towards making your lifestyle healthy and wholesome mental health. Practice Mindfulness in your life, try to be a morning person, do not skip self-care routine and stay fit.

Saying aloud positive affirmations might seem funny, but when you make it a regular practice (even if it is in the shower) it will come naturally. I know that unless I am positive, or my mental health is not okay, I can’t be a good parent to my son. I even ask him to say some daily affirmations! So why not give it a try, it costs nothing!
