Do you have a rushed morning every single day? Yes, we all do. Do you grab a pack of juice or a piping hot cup of coffee to start your day? You might want to PAUSE and THINK AGAIN. Good health is highly based on your diet than the amount of time you spend working out. For a healthy body it’s not just important to eat the right kind of foods but you also need to know the foods to avoid and at which time! In this post you’ll find a list of foods to avoid on empty stomach. Yes, you must not eat these foods first thing in the morning.
Why you should avoid certain foods first thing in the morning?
For your healthy eating goal, it’s important to realise how your body and metabolism works. This means getting to know how to optimize food that helps in improving digestion and absorption of nutrients. Certain foods – though packed with nutrients – can increase acidity in the body, specially when you wake up after a 7-8 hours gap of having any food.
First thing in the morning the body needs food packed with antioxidants, soluble fibres, vitamins and nutrients that will awaken your digestive and immune system.
10 foods to avoid on empty stomach
Tea and Coffee
Drinking Tea, Coffee or other caffeinated products is a general trend in many households, but did you know it’s actually harming your digestive system? Tea or Coffee on an empty stomach increases acidity and may cause heartburn and indigestion throughout the day.
Yogurt
Do you like your breakfast cereal with yogurt, first thing in the morning? Think again. When your body wakes up after sleep your stomach already has a high acidity content. The benefits of lactic acids of yogurt is rendered ineffective when with the high acidity content of stomach acids. It’s better when you consume yogurt as snacks post breakfast time.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are quite healthy with its high amount of Vitamin C and other nutrients. But it’s also has high levels of tannic acid that only increases the acidity levels of the body when consumed first thing in the morning. It’s one of the most important ‘healthy’ foods to avoid on empty stomach. So skip the tomato juice in the morning and have it in salads or salsas during lunch or dinner or even snack time.
Bananas
Bananas are high in carbs and iron and is considered a super food, but it isn’t your perfect mate for the empty stomach first thing in the morning. Consuming bananas on an empty stomach leads to imbalance of magnesium and potassium in blood because banans contain high levels of these two minerals.
They are absolutely good super foods post workout or as a mid-morning snack.
Citrus Fruits
The high levels of citric acid in citrus fruits like lemon, oranges, grape fruits and more can damage mucus membranes, increase acidity and cause heartburn when consumed alone first thing in the morning. This is the perfect example of right kind of food at the wrong time! These are healthy foods to avoid on empty stomach.
Spicy Food
Indians are known over the world for spicy food. We like our chilies in dosa fillings, poha, chutneys and other popular breakfast items. But eating spices and chilies on empty stomach irritates the stomach lining and increases acidic reactions and cramps. Their pungent nature can also trigger ingestion.
Aerated Drinks
Aerated drinks are bad for your health at any time of the day. It is at its worth when consumed on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. When carbonated acids mix with your stomach acids they can result in nausea, gas, flatulence and can cause cramps.
Raw Vegetable
Green raw vegetables are another group of foods to avoid on empty stomach. Green raw vegetables like cucumber are healthy but when consumed on an empty stomach the roughage can cause flatulence, heartburn and abdominal pain.
Processed Sugar
You can be a conscious eater and avoid adding sugar in your breakfast, but did you know processed sugar found in foods like cereals, donuts, pancake mixes, muffins can all be damaging to the liver? Avoid cereals that contain ‘fructose’. Simple oatmeal goes a long way.
Alcohol
Alcohol on an empty stomach is like sending alcohol straight to the bloodstreams! Without food in the stomach alcohol passes through the stomach, kidney, liver to the brain and can reach the brain under 1 minute. Yes, that fast. That is not something that you want first thing in the morning. Even if you have a hangover, don’t try to counter that with more alcohol. Choose foods that cure hangover instead. Avoid alcohol first thing in the morning.
Remember these foods to avoid on empty stomach first thing in the morning and help to optimize the digestive system of your body. Better absorption of nutrients and better metabolism will help to keep you fit.
