Saturday Tutorial – How to make a custom Favicon for your blog

saturday-tutorial-header-how-to-make-a-custom-favicon-for-your-blog2

Do you have a custom favicon for your blog? Do you want to learn what a favicion is and how to make a custom favicon for your blog? My setp-by-step tutorial will give you valuable insights on favicon. You should have a favicon installed on your blog – to make it look professional and prettier.

Welcome to another session of #SaturdayTutorials with Tina which I started last week. Every Saturday I’ll be posting some tutorial and ‘how to’ posts on blogging better and making your blog better. I might do some sessions on social media as well some time later.

In this ‘how-to’ post I am going to show you how to make Custom Favicon for your blog with free tools. I am a complete Photoshop and Illustrator junkie and most of my stuffs are done there. But for tutorial sake I am going to use all free tools. And for this post I am going to use Picmonkey.

We announced winners for #ThankfulThursdays and #FridayFotoFiction for last week and as winning prize they both will be getting Custom Favicons for their blogs! Custom made by me for them and I am going to show you how to design a favicon, generate a favicon file and install that in your blog – for both Blogger and Wordpress sites.

What on Earth is a Favicon?

Are you thinking in mind what the hell is this girl going on writing about favicon! What on earth is a favicon??? Well look up to your browser tab do you see a tiny logo on the browser tab next to the name of the site? That my friend is a Favicon – shorter version of ‘Favorite Icon’!

favicon

Do I Really Need this Tiny Little Thing?

Don’t underestimate the power of the tiny image. It is as powerful as your blog’s logo or header. A Favicon helps you to visually identify your sites tab in browser. Did you ask what the name of your Blog is doing then? Open some 10-12 new tabs in your Chrome or FireFox you will understand what I am saying.

How to Design your own Custom Favicon?

For this tutorial I am going to do two favicons for kreativemommy and sirimiri. When I checked their blog I didn’t find a custom logo on which I can build up. In my future tutorials I’ll show you how to make logo or blog header and that might help you guys.

Create the Graphic

Using Picmonkey create a graphic close to your blog’s logo or header in a square shape in 512 x 512 pixels. Always work on transparent background.

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog-1

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog-3

Now using Overlays and Text tool create a desired shape or initial for the blog. It’s better if it is relevant to your blog / blog’s niche / blog’s logo.

Pro Tip – Simpler the better – too many things in this small space will not be visible.

I am making a simple shape and initial for kreativemommy in tune with her blog’s color scheme.

You will find shapes under Overlays > Geometric. I am using two shapes to make a callout bubble.

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog-4

Save the image in .png form (it will come as default since we have taken transparent background).

Generate .ico File

The favicon is essentially an icon and has to be saved as .ico file. There are tons of free tools on the net which help you creating this. We will be using the Iconifier for today’s tutorial. I like it because you have tons of options to choose from.

Click on choose file to choose the .png file that you have saved on your system from the previous step. And then click on iconify.

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog-iconifier

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog-iconifier2

This will give you many options. Click on the tiniest one at the last which is the favicon.ico file. Save it on your system.

So now your favicon is ready.

How to install Favicon on your Blog?

For Blogger

Go to Layout from your dashboard and upload the favicon.ico file in the favicon section on top left.

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blogblogger

For Wordpress.com Blogs

Go to Settings > General > Blog icon

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-wordpressdotcom

Upload the .ico file. Sometimes wordpress dot com blogs have problem with .ico files. If you face that problem use .png file that will work too in wordpress.com blogs.

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-wordpressdotcom2

Now you are all set to go even if your blog is opened in a device with higher resolution like an apple device with retina display.

For Self – Hosted Wordpress Site

Go to Appearance > Customize>Site Identity > Site Icon and upload the favicon.

This is how it looks on my Site Tina Basu

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-wordpress

So now your favicon is up and running in every kind of platform.

Still not sure how it is going to help?

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-your-blog

Here is what happens when you have 12 tabs open on your browser.  Without the favicon one wouldn’t even know which site is open. I suggest your favicons that resemble your sites logo so that it is easy to identify – which essentially is your brand.

Simplest and tiniest of things can be important too. Remember that.

Things to keep in mind  while making your favicon

Do not use light colors – the browser tab is mostly light grey – so light color will get lost

Do not use thin script font – that will be completely missed

The actual favicon size on the browser is tiny – 16 px x 16 px. So keep things simple. We have taken 512 px x 512 px because the resolution of screens differ from device to device. Whatever is the device you want your favicon to look great – be it a laptop or an iPhone or an iPad.

Here is how kreativemommy’s favicon looked earlier (on left). And next to it you can see the new one (which I have uploaded on a test site). Can you spot the difference in visibility?

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-yourblog22

Sirimiri on the other hand didn’t have a favicon so far. But now she can flaunt one – a vibrant one, that too!

sirimiri-f

saturday-tutorials-how-to-make-custom-favicon-for-yourblog22

Here are the winning two favicons for Deepa and Mayuri.

sirimiri kreativemommy

Hope you liked this Favicon Tutorial and I have made it easy for you to understand – the need of a custom favicon, how to design one, how to make the .ico file and how to install it in your site.

Now exercise for you is to make a custom favicon for your site, upload it and let me know how it is!

If you liked this tutorial – hit the like button or share it on your social media and tag me.

Let me also know what all you would want me to do a tutorial on. I will make tutorials based on your suggestions.

So I’m signing off here today. Come join me for another session of fun learning next Saturday!

dubai-property-why-investing-in-a-property-in-dubai-a-good-idea

Dubai is one of the most populous and cosmopolitan city in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is known for its luxurious lifestyle, extravagant shopping, mind boggling architectural marvels and sky scrapers. It truly is an oasis in the dessert.

Dubai in recent times have seen a huge surge in expats moving in and settling down there. This also has made the real estate scenario in Dubai extremely popular.

What Living in Dubai is Great?

  1. The UAE is a largely tax free country – so you don’t have to pay taxes. The government collects revenue through other means – parking fees, car registrations etc
  2. Dubai offers good medical and schooling facilities.
  3. It has great transportation options – broad roads, cabs, metro
  4. It is a largely safe country – whether you are a male or female you can almost walk anywhere in Dubai at any hour
  5. Dubai gives you a sense of freedom in practicing your religion freely
  6. Everything in Dubai exudes luxury – shopping, living, food, festivals, cars

Property in Dubai

Dubai Real estate market got a huge popularity w.r.t. return & hence most of the expats has already started investing in Dubai to get good return out of their investments.

Indians top the list of foreign investors in Dubai Real Estate Market in 2014 and 2015.

According to real estate studies rents for studio apartments in Dubai yielded 7 percent on an average in December 2015, which is far higher than many prime properties in across the world.

DAMAC Properties is one of the leading real estate company in Dubai. They construct and offer luxury residential and commercial properties both for sale in Dubai, UAE and other Gulf countries.

Some of their famous projects include

AKOYA Oxygen

Investing in a property in Dubai now can be good in terms of returns and living. Apart from the financial advantages, investment in the real estate in Dubai is a pretty straight forward and hassle-free process. It is hard to ignore the massive growth that Dubai has seen in recent times in every aspect. Riding the same wave is a good idea.

So if you have the means for investment and looking to invest in a property Dubai can be just the destination for you. Do have a look out for properties for sale in Dubai.

Book Preview – Deceiving Bella by Cate Beauman

by tinabasu November 10, 2016
written by tinabasu

I love books, everyone knows that. I love thriller, murder, mystery, crime, blood, gore and all that – if you have been following me you probably know that too. Have you read the Bodyguards of L.A. County series by Cate Beauman? Not aware of it? Let me give you a book preview of Deceiving Bella – book eleven in Cate Beauman’s Bodyguards of L.A. County series.

Story Line

03-deceiving-bella-ebook-smallEthan Cooke Security and their bodyguard team return to action in Deceiving Bella.

Isabella Colby has always yearned for normalcy. Now that she’s settled in LA, she finally has it. Good friends, a pretty home, and her thriving career as the Palisades’ top skincare specialist are a dream come true. Bella is content until she meets her hunky new neighbor, but her attraction to the blue-eyed cutie is the least of her worries when contacting her long-lost father threatens to destroy her happy life.

Reed McKinley is more than ready to forget the past. His seven-year stint as an NYPD detective nearly got him killed. His wounds have healed and he’s starting over as Ethan Cooke Security’s latest recruit. With sixty-hour workweeks and little time to himself, the last thing on his mind is a relationship. Then he bumps into the gorgeous woman next door.

Reed and Bella become fast friends. Before long, Reed discovers that Bella is keeping dangerous secrets. Bella may have the answers to decades-old questions he’s been searching for. Reed will risk it all to uncover the truth, but he soon realizes that the deeper he digs, the direr the consequences.

Read an excerpt from Deceiving Bella:

Should we get started?” Bella gestured to the kitchen.

“After you.”

She walked in front of Reed, hurrying to the table to pull out a chair. “Does this work?”

“Yeah, it’s fine.” He sat down.

She immediately draped him with the black cover, wanting to get to his hair while it was still wet. “So, what are we doing here, exactly?”

“Just a cleanup, especially on my neck.”

“Sure.” She grabbed the sheers and took her place by his side, sliding her fingers though his short hair and stopped. “Oops.”

His shoulders tensed. “What?”

“Just kidding. A little hair cutting humor.”

He tilted his head up, meeting her eyes. “A comedian.”

She laughed as he smiled. “I haven’t even started cutting yet.” She gave him a bump. “Try to relax. I promise you’re in good hands.”

“Chop away.”

“Thanks.” She combed her fingers through his hair once more, using small snips to freshen up his look. Silent seconds ticked by as she breathed in the masculine scent that was Reed. He didn’t seem to wear cologne or use any fancy shampoos, but he smelled good just the same. “So, how was your day?”

“Not too shabby.”

She worked her way around his head, finding his cut a breeze to clean up. He easily could have gone another week without any problems. “What did you do?”

“Worked a little. Boxed.”

“Fascinating.”

“I could make up something about stopping a bank robbery in progress or rescuing a cat from a tree.”

She smiled. “The truth is fine, thanks.”

“What about you?”

“It was pretty much a normal day at the office—a second-session tattoo removal, a microdermabrasion, two stretch mark reductions, the usual stuff.”

“What’s the tattoo of? The one you’re taking off?”

“A woman’s name. Genevieve. The relationship didn’t work out.”

He winced. “Ouch.”

“Triple ouch. Tattoo removal is not a pain-free procedure, nor is it cheap—and he went pretty ornate with Genevieve. Hopefully next time he’ll pick a woman with a shorter name or abstain from getting himself tatted up altogether.”

He laughed.

She grinned, loving that sound. Did he have any idea how gorgeous he was when he smiled like that? She picked up the clippers off the table and let her knees rest against his as she leaned in and gently lifted his chin, evening out his sideburns. She swallowed, feeling his breath on her skin and his eyes studying her face. Licking her lips, she met his gaze. “You better hope I get this part right, or you’ll have to tilt your head for the next four days.”

He sent her another one of his pulse-pounding smiles. “You’ll have to help me decide if I should lean more to the left or right.”

Oh, this cutie had the potential to be trouble. Her eyes darted to his mouth mere inches from hers as his five o’clock shadow tormented her sensitized fingers. She took a step back and a steadying breath. It was a good thing they were just friends—currently the only relationship status she was interested in.

Thankful Thursdays

Can you be Thankful about a habit of yours? #ThankfulThursdays

by tinabasu November 10, 2016
written by tinabasu

Welcome to another week of #ThankfulThursdays the weekly Thankful Link Party that I host with Amrita. On our debut week we saw five participants apart from the host and co-host. We had promised we’ll be picking featured blogger who is the best reflection of this community spirit – the blogger who has maintained the rules and has come forward to spread love, gratitude, thankfulness. And guess what we have not just one winner we in fact have two announcements to make.

The winner of #ThankfulThursdays Week 1 is Mayuri who blogs at Sirimiri. But instead of having one we decided to pick a First Runner-up Winner too! You know we are all happy and thankful for the new section. The first runner up is Ruchie who blogs at For Foodie Family.

thankful-thursdays-winners-week-1

Congratulations winners. But hey, celebration doesn’t end here. Watch out Twitter for some surprises.

This brings us to Week 2 of #ThankfulThursdays

Here is our prompt

thankful-thursdays-blog-hop-week-2-blog-prompt

Did you ask if I had a habit to be thankful for?

If you know me close enough you will know I have a fetish for shoes and handbags – like every other girl *rolls eyes*. Some of these handbags are packed neatly and kept in their designated shelves in the cupboard. After every use they are re-packed and stored – I take good care of my handbags!

Now I have a habit – you may say a rather bad habit of not taking out the contents of the bags! The bags can have important documents, money, LIP GLOSS and god knows what not inside the various pockets and I can be totally unaware of it. Half the time I think – where did I misplace that thing! But then I am too lazy to take out everything, open the packs of these handbags and check inside!

Last night our PM dropped the currency ban bomb and sent everyone in the nation on a tizzy! It took me some time to digest that we can no longer use Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes! Then for another few minutes I was cursing the entire idea thinking about the long queues in banks and post offices in the coming days. [ I am not cursing the PM or this decision, mind you – I applaud this decision].

Then I thought let me first count how many of these notes I have with me and how many times I need to visit the bank to get these exchanged. While counting I remembered just a day back I was carrying my pink tote and might have stashed some cash in one of the zippers. As expected there were few hundred rupee notes and a “worthless piece of golden paper” – the not-so-celebrated-anymore Rs 500 note!

This discovery also made me realize I might find some more stash in some other bag. I have this habit of keeping ‘emergency money’ and then completely forget about it. After twenty minutes of frantic search through all the handbags several rolls of money were found including three Rs 500 notes! This made the husband comment – “why do you have so many bags!”

I also found a long lost gold earring which I simply assumed was at my place in my hometown! Can I call this money – un accounted for – even if it’s not a staggering figure! I guess I can call it. But wait, I am not the only one who is guilty. The husband took out older purses from his study table drawer which again contained his share of “emergency money”!

It made me realize I had some surprise savings! This money stashing habit at least ensured we didn’t spend that amount. So shouldn’t I be thankful that I have a habit of keeping things stashed and then completely forget about it! Because now I am reaping the benefit of it – I have surprise money! I felt like playing some kind of a treasure hunt last night – all thanks to Modiji!

Are you thankful of any habit of yours? Tell us about it and we might feature you next week!

marvel-money-money-money

Yeah I feel like Tony Stark now – not because of the amount I could find, but because I have found some money!

Movies I can relate to in my life – #TadkaTuesday

by tinabasu November 9, 2016
written by tinabasu

movies-relatable-in-your-life-tadka-tuesday

Is there one movie that I can relate to? No way there are tons of movies that I can relate to with different phases of my life. There are movies that I felt were just me when I was in school and college. For most of my childhood years I was super inspired with a movie called Return to Oz and in some parallel world I was Dorothy and had all my imaginary friends – Tik Tok, the Pumpkin head and even the chicken – Billina! Yes I still remember the name! LOLereturn to oz

Source – Hollywood.com

We had a VCR cassette (if you even remember what that is) of that movie and every other day I used to ask my mom, I want to watch Daini Buri – that’s witch in Bengali! And everyone I didn’t like eventually were labeled as daini (within my head, mind you).

Now at 30 I have seen enough life and every time I watch Sex And The City I am reminded of my friends – The Gurlz. We are four girls who have been together through everything – madness, happiness, craziness and we are still together even if it’s not a single city. So relationships, marriage, kids are on one side and friendship is on the other side. We know we’ll be together with each other.

sex and the city

This also brings Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in picture. Friendship, soul searching, sticking together is now a way of life almost.

Which is the movie you can relate to the most? Let me know.
