Visit Bali – The Dream Vacation with BFFs

Bali – the Indonesian Holiday destination is known for its tropical waters, white sandy beaches, parties and shopping. Visit Bali with your BFF and enjoy a holiday.

If you know me you know I love traveling – just about anywhere. Getting to know new places, getting to learn about cultures, their cuisine and new people is such an enriching experience. Lately, I haven’t traveled much other than weekend gateways from Bangalore. That’s what a daunting schedule and a toddler-to-be does to you.

I want to embark on a relaxing trip with my BFFs maybe. All we’ll do is relax, enjoy, read some books, shop, sip on long island iced tea by the beach, party, enjoy a spa day – ohh I love it already. Not think about anything and just enjoy!

All holidays require planning. When you travel without planning you can land up in a mess. Sometimes impromptu decisions are good, but with me I have seen, a little planning saves the day!

Bali – Getting There

Getting four girls to take a week long leave at the same time can be a task in itself. But when it’s Bali and only the girl gang, I am sure we’ll come up with something by October, what are the long weekends for anyway? Getting a good deal on the flights and hotel can save you a lot of money which you can use up for those nice little luxuries of life – SHOPPING, Eating out, partying! Backpacking through Asia is a great way to explore places.

I saw there’s no direct flight to Bali, Indonesia from Bangalore, how sad! While doing my travel research – I research on everything while I am planning for my holidays – I saw the cheapest flights Bangalore to Bali in October would be Thai Airways via Bangkok. It’s actually around 20K – I think it’s a pretty good deal.

I searched for some resorts where we can stay by the beach and enjoy the vacay to the fullest and I can see pretty cheap deals for hotels. They look perfect and the reviews are also nice. If we can save up on these two big things I think we’ll have more money for all the adventures that I have in mind.

Fun And Frolic in Bali

Banana boat ride and water sports at Tanjung Benoa Beach, snorkeling and watching the beautiful oceanlife, Dinner cruise at Benoa Harbour, visiting the volcano and villages of Celuk, Ubud, the stunning coral reefs – Bali has so much to offer. Not to forget our own beach time and lazing around the day.

I want us to hire few scooties or mopeds and explore the beautiful town – it’s the tropical beach paradise after all. And one day I must reserve for a whole day Balinese spa. Me time without spa time is not complete. Period.

Check out more on Where to Go in Bali.

Can girls go on a holiday and not shop? No way, that’s not possible. Why else are we saving money with the flight and hotel! I have heard a lot about their fine arts and handicrafts and hey they even bargain! I want to stroll through the night markets and pick up something for the home. I have heard the Ubud Art market is fascinating and you get these beautiful silk scarves and hand-woven bags. I am sure I’ll pay a visit there.

I am always eager to try out new food and local cuisine, and such a wonderful place, I am sure, will have a lot to offer. I will definitely try the stuffed duck wrapped in banana leaf.

I am already pretty excited. I am keeping my fingers crossed and I am hoping this dream vacation with BFFs will become a reality!

Book Review: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

by tinabasu July 13, 2016
written by tinabasu

me before you, book review,

There are love stories that read and feel – hmm, good, cute, wish the characters have a good life and end at that. And then there are stories that make you think, that make you feel worried, that make you cry, that make you want to revisit and change the end perhaps! Me Before You by Jojo Moyes is that kind of book that might make you realize you are an emotional typhoon!

There aren’t many novels that make you so damn emotional! I mean novels like The Fault in Our Stars or Love Story did make me emotional and all, but Me Before You made me a weeping tear producing factory! So Miss Jojo Moyes I don’t know whether I should thank you for such an emotional upheaval in my little soul or should I ask you why, just why it had to end the way it did?

Let’s Get into the Story

Louisa Clark, the cheerful working class girl lands up a job as a care giver and companion to the very wealthy and very angry Will Traynor, who has turned a quadriplegic, perpetually stuck to his wheelchair, after an accident.  Camilla, Will’s mother has hopes that having the ‘chatty’ Louisa around might cheer up the angry and sulking Will, who once ‘really enjoyed his life’.

Will, however, doesn’t get along with Louisa on the onset and doesn’t want anyone’s sympathy or pity. But Lou keeps trying. Her ‘perfect cup of tea’ didn’t break the ice much but pretty soon she ends up watching a French movie with Will. However, Will has other plans with his now non-existent life which has been upsetting everyone. Louisa tries hard to make him love his life again by tries to change his mind. She takes him to watch a horse racing, a music concert in her bid to make him at least “halfway happy”.

Will is invited to his ex-girlfriend’s wedding where he decides to make an appearance with Lou. Taking that forward Lou decides to take Will and his male nurse Nathan to a vacation to cheer Will up. He looks happy and enjoying himself for the first time in his post-accident life.

But will this change his decision? Will Lou be successful in changing Will’s mind. Will they find love? You need to pick up a copy or get a kindle edition and unravel.

Why the Hell I got so emotional?

You will know it once you read the story. Watching life from Will’s perspective is painful. Reading Louisa’s thoughts about Will and her efforts to cheer him up are hopeful. These two are very different characters – Will is not the usual romance hero on whom you will swooning over nor is Lou your run of the mill hot and blond or brunette heroine of a love story. Yet Moyes managed to create a charming love story between them. She is the one to like glittery ballerinas and yellow and black striped leggings.

Moyes is a clever author, I must say, she brings out the flaws of her characters, and shows how good flaws can be, they are natural and it’s great to be normal in spite of having those flaws.

About the Author – Jojo Moyes

jojo moyes, novelist, me before you

This British novelist is a former journalist who worked for The Independent for 10 years before devoting all her time to writing.

Her novel Foreign Fruit won the Romantic Novelists’ Association (RNA) Romantic Novel of the Year in 2004.

You can read more about her at her website.

My Verdict

If you are a romance novel junkie – THIS IS A MUST READ. I got so carried away that I went and the movie too which was released last month. The movie’s pretty good too. May be I’ll review that soon as well. I learnt there is a sequel to this story too – After You. I really wonder what that has in store. My blogger friend Preethi recommends that I should read that too, in spite of me telling her I have no idea if I can take all this emotion anymore! So I am reading it anyway.

My Rating

A big 4.5 out of 5. You know why, by now.

Warning: Keep a boxful of tissues ready for the last few chapters and if you are watching the movie!

TOP 5 MOVIES BETTER THAN THE BOOKS THEY ARE BASED ON

by tinabasu July 12, 2016

top-5-movies-better-than-the-books-they-are-based-on

We all love reading books for the sheer joy of experiencing something new. Mushy romance, spine chilling thrill, we love all that an author offers. We love movies too. We are also little skeptical when our favourite novels are brought on the celluloid – can they re-create the same magic. I still like flipping pages and find imagination good. But hey, there are some movies better than the books they are based on.

Today I am listing down my favorite top 5 movies which were made better than the books.

FORREST GUMP

Forrest Gump is originally a novel written by Winston Groom and published in the year 1986. It’s a story about the life and adventures of Forrest – a man with low IQ and cognitive disabilities and how he wades through school, war, love and even the space!

The movie by the same title starring Tom Hanks was released in 1994 and went on to become a cult classic. The movie however, doesn’t have the rough edged of the character of Forrest as in the novel. The movie also doesn’t show his career as an astronaut or being held by the cannibals.

But the movie adaptation creates a wonderful story where you are simply blown away by the endearing performance by Tom Hanks. It is an epic romantic comedy now which went on to win Academy Awards and several Academy Awards nomination.

original-1

THE GODFATHER TRILOGY

The Godfather Trilogy is perhaps one of the best movies made in the history of American cinema and is a cult classic today. This trilogy is loved even today by people all across the world and often used in the syllabus of film studies.

The novel, written by Italian American author Mario Puzo is a famous crime thriller where the English speaking audience first got acquainted with Italian criminal terms like  consigliere, caporegime, Cosa Nostra etc . The story is about an Italian mafia family headed by Don Vito Corleone.

But the film adaptation outdid the novel in no time with exceptional performance by Marlon Brando and Al Pacino under superlative direction of Francis Ford Coppola . The right of the film were bought even before the novel had become a major success. With several Academy Awards wins it stands as the most influential films of all time.

THE NOTEBOOK

This beautiful romance novel by Nicholas Sparks about the love and romance of Allie and Noah is a jewel in its own right. But the beautiful narrative is brought to light in its truest sense in the movie by the same name. Today it is one of the best romantic films ever made.

The story is about young Allie and Noah when they meet first in their teens and have an episode of summer love.  But they are separated by their class and family. Later they discover each other and choose to be together against all odds. But it’s much later we find out how deep and pure their love was. Noah stands by his love even when Allie is suffering from Alzheimer’s and doesn’t recognize him.

The narrative of this story is such that watching it on screen is much better than imagining it while reading. The movie today has gained a cult following

JAWS

Reading about a killer shark on prowl and watching that happen giving a chill to your spine are two different things. Jaws remain one of the most entertaining and intense Hollywood films. It is also one of the top movies in Steven Speilberg’s filmography. The original novel written by Peter Benchley was a story about a great white shark preying upon a resort town and the adventures of three men trying to kill it.

Spielberg, however, omits many subplots from the novel and keeps the movie focused on the terror spread by the shark.

THREE IDIOTS

Closer home the best book to movie adaptation perhaps is 3 Idiots which is based on the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. The novel revolves around the life of three friends making it to one of the best engineering colleges of India and how their life gets entwined with the monotony of academics and pressure of competition.

The film however, takes the story to another level. It not only questions the system and society but is a perfect display of wit, humor and truth. It went on to become a box office hit and the film is listed in the Guinness World Records for the record of highest box office film gross for a Bollywood film.

5 Life Skills I learnt living away from Family

by tinabasu July 11, 2016
written by tinabasu

5 life skills i learnt living away from family

There comes a time when some of us have to move out of your family home and relocate to other cities/countries for education or work. I moved out and relocated to Bangalore in 2007 for pursuing my post-graduation and it’s been 9 years that I am staying away from my family – well actually now I have a family of my own!

All these years of staying away has been an enriching experience and has shown some desperate moments as well. There are two things that you can do when these desperate moments haunt you – you sulk and brood over and do nothing about it or you brace yourself and tell life – BRING IT ON!

I am going to list down few life skills I picked up while staying away from home.

COOKING

When you relocate to the southern part of India you know what you get to eat – idli, dosa and a lot of variety of I-am-sure-nice food but I didn’t like that. Having a new kind of food (that you particularly don’t like) once or twice is tolerable but having to eat that thrice a day everyday was a punishment. The only food we got at college canteen was south Indian food and a handful of north Indian items like roti and subji! The food at the paying guest accommodation was also quite hopeless, but luckily there was a kitchen.

A fish recipe you can find on my Food Blog – Twinkling Tina Cooks

The first time I made food – with mom’s instructions on phone – it was horrible! I just didn’t throw it because I had made an effort to cook! But you know experience is the best teacher. I started cooking often and the cooking skills did improve. Very soon I was making gourmet dishes and delighting my friends in the PG. Now my better half thinks he married well! I even have come up with my food blog Twinkling Tina Cooks. I must say this is a passion I realized, I had in me, only after I started living away. I had not even ventured in my kitchen while I was at home!

NAILS, HAMMER, LIGHT – BRING IT ON

girl-changing-light-bulb-smiling-her-home-48236977

Staying alone makes you independent and teaches you to do several things. You can’t always get someone to do all these odd jobs at home – changing bulbs, hammering nails on the wall, fixing a frame, putting up a curtain – you name it I have done it all! It all started when once the light in our room in the PG had broken. Why do I even wait for someone to help when I can help myself?

And it’s not just changing light bulbs, I can even join wires and fix a plug now!

NETWORKING WITHOUT THE NET

large

Two things happen when you relocate to a different city and start a new life. You leave behind your family and friends back home and feel bad about it and feel home sick. Or simply make new friends. Some people say it’s difficult to make friends later in your life when you have passed out college. In this age of Facebook, it is difficult to network in the real sense.

I was an introvert till about my sixth and seventh standard and later started opening up. But seriously I made friends for life when I started living alone. We have been together in joy, in tears, have taken some wonder trips together without letting anyone know. These are the friendships that would stand against everything even when we are not together in the same city.

SHARING & BEING CONSIDERATE

being-considerate-of-others

I am a single child and had never had to share anything all throughout my growing years. From the very beginning I had my own room, my own washroom, all my stuffs were only mine and I valued my privacy, as did everyone in my family. For a long time I knew I couldn’t sleep if there was anyone in my room. But once I started living in the PG I chose to stay in a double sharing room. The decision of not renting an apartment or a single sharing room was mine – how can someone stay without talking! I am someone who talks non-stop and I enjoy company.

I learnt to share the room as well as my stuffs. I learnt to being considerate with girls when we had to share a single television! But I guess these are important things to learn in life.

MANAGING EXPENSES

expense-tracking-850x476

When you are on your own you realize money is a big thing. I started doing freelance design work while doing my post-graduation for some extra pocket money. My dad was funding my expenses. But I am such a shopaholic that sometimes the account balance used to scare me. This stayed with me even when I started working. But then I thought if I wanted to lead the life, the way I wanted I had to manage my expenses.

The day I started muting my expenses down on an excel sheet I at least had an overview where and how I was spending. After over six months I noticed the trend of unnecessary expenditure in shopping and eating out. Well since I am a big foodie, eating out made sense and so was shopping. But then I used to shop every weekend. It took time, to reduce it. But yes I helped myself and managed the expense well!

I saw this Life Skill Learning post on Rajlakshmi’s blog Destiny’s Child. I thought I had to list down my own. So what all you guys learnt while staying away from home and family?

Top 5 Romance Novels Worth Re-reading

by tinabasu July 10, 2016
written by tinabasu

Do you get these urges of re-reading novels? I definitely am that kind of a person who likes to re-read stories and novels. I can go back and read some the classic romance novels any day, any time of the day, and some mystery and thriller books just for the sheer joy of feeling the emotions. I am listing down today Top 5 Romance Novels Worth Re-reading.

Currently I am reading only romance novels – I don’t know why, but I feel like living through these romantic tales. So it’s rather apt that I write about some of my favorite romance novels that I have read more than once.

Pride & Prejudice

pride and prejudice

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is perhaps the first title that comes to your mind when you talk about romance novels. Doesn’t it? Elizabeth Bennet, one of English literatures most popular heroines, is still as fresh and bold as anyone from this era. Though first published in 1813 Lizzy and her thoughts on morality, love and marriage are true even today.

And what can I say about Mr. Darcy! The man lacking in social skills is actually such a romantic at heart. In spite of all the ‘pride’ you can’t help but swoon over him. It’s a true victory of love when Lizzy and Mr. Darcy leaves behind their prejudice and pride and surrender to each other.

OMG I love this one so much. This is the fourth time I am reading this novel.

jane austen quote, pride and prejudice quote

Gone with the Wind

gone with the wind

Gone with the Wind is an epic love story by Margaret Mitchell which won a Pulitzer Prize. There has been many novels, and movies on the American Civil War and its aftermath but seldom have we come across a novel that is as beautiful and haunting at the same time. This complex story of love, jealousy, death and war is deep and multi-dimensional. Scarlet is not just bold and free spirited, she simply desires love. But she is very different from the usual love story heroines for she stands by her family during trying times and shows exceptional courage in keeping them safe.

But it is just not a romance fiction but also touches upon issues of slavery, caste system, war and its haunting experiences. No wonder it is so popular in the US even today.

gone with the wind

Romeo & Juliet

romeo and juliet

How can any romance novel listing be over without this cult classic! Written by the master himself, there is no one who is not in love with William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Violence, love, passion, rivalry, blood feud you name it and it has it.

The classic case of love at first sight is still as popular among people as love is. I have read this first while being in school and falling in love and crying with the deaths.

romeo and juliet quote

The Notebook

the-notebook-book-coverIt is great to read about young mushy romance any day. But when it is as good as The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks you might want to read it again and again. The love story between Noah and Allie is everything from a summer romance to undying love and eternal love. Separated by class and society Allie is denied any alliance with Noah and is engaged to Lon. The she finds herself searching for Noah when she comes across the picture of his house for sale on the newspaper.

Fate brings them together against all odds. But the actual love story perhaps begins after that. Noah is by her side even when she is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and doesn’t remember anything – not even him. He reads their story to her every day at the care home. That just makes you go aww.

the notebook quote

Love Story

love-story

Okay, all romance lovers would agree with me, they are in love with Love Story by Erich Segal. It’s like the favourite book of every teen (at least my time). Story of love, story of sacrifices, it is the story of absolute love. Oliver and Jenny are meant to be together but destiny has different plans. When Jenny is suffering from leukemia Oliver decides to go on with life without telling his young wife about her ailment. Living life to their fullest.

love story quote

So these are some of my favourite romance novels that I have read more than once. Do you have some of your favourite novels that you have multiple times? Share with me.

Is your child catching up on lost growth?

by tinabasu July 3, 2016
written by tinabasu

How is the growth in your children? Are they falling under the growth standards of WHO?  Is he eating well? Is your child child catching up on lost growth?

child catching up on lost growth, is your child not eating well

Being a parent is not easy. It’s only after I became a mom I realized I am much more sensitive and emotional than I thought I was. I used to think I was pretty cool and patient but when you are a parent your patience is tried every single minute and so is your nature of worrying over little details of your child.

It’s important that the expecting mother eats well, rests well – everyone tells you that, isn’t it? I was told by a kind doctor one little advice which helped quite a lot. Doing long breathing exercise – no it’s not a prep for delivery. The more oxygen you inhale in, the more oxygen gets into the system of your baby and they put on weight better and faster.

There are many mothers who eat and rest well while expecting still their babies are born underweight. Some babies do catch up on gaining weight pretty soon, but some don’t manage to and are a step behind from reaching their weight and height milestones.

Did You Know?

After birth babies lose some weight and weighs lesser than their birth weight. It’s a natural phenomenon because they lose the excess water from their bodies. They can lose up to 10% of their birth weight in the first few days.

Thus the actual weight gaining mission starts from this lost weight mark.

Once solids are started after 6 months, some babies feed well, some absolutely hate the sight of food. My cousin sisters son didn’t eat anything till a year! I know some worried parents who have been facing this I-won’t-eat challenge for quite some time. When your tots don’t eat properly and they don’t meet the growth milestones on time, it can get pretty worrisome for parents.

You are constantly thinking of ways to feed your child, so that his height and weight is growing well and falling under the WHO growth standards. If they don’t catch up on their lost growth it might give rise to health problems as well as emotional problems for both the parent and the child.

As a parent, I will be worried about his health, his growth, his over-all well-being. But imagine the emotional set back your child might experience when they are in school and get bullied for being short or too thin in his class. What if they are not selected in a sports team because of being underweight!

Catching up on lost growth

My son wasn’t eating properly for some time now. I couldn’t make him eat anything. The only thing he was okay with was milk. Most children are okay with milk when they are flavored, I guess. If your child is between three and nine year old and is not falling under the growth standards you could try the Horlicks Growth+

Check in the calculator if they are falling under the standards.

Horlicks Growth+ is a specialized nutrition product for children who are lagging behind in height and weight. Whey protein and added nutrients enable children to catch up on lost growth. It has been clinically proven for visible growth in children within six months. Children tend to drink flavored milk better than normal milk, the chocolate and vanilla flavors would help in getting the glass wiped clean.

As a parent, all we want is our children to be healthy, normal and happy.
