September Gratitude List

September Gratitude List

September has been specially kind to me. I have experienced so many things last month that in no way can I let it go without a heartfelt gratitude for everyone involved.

Blog Love

I participated in the month long #MyFriendAlexa Campaign by Blogchatter from my food blog Twinkling Tina Cooks to see if I could better my Alexa rank. I went in with some goal in mind – which initially was to increase the rank by few hundreds. But I guess I was being too modest about it. I ended up growing the rank by a good 47%. Here is my report card about the campaign.

SO THANK YOU @Blogchatter & #MyFriendAlexa

Making New Friends

I made several friends over last month due to this campaign. Some bloggers have been so inspirational that I guess that was the best part of the campaign – I feel much richer with these bunch of friends than the increase in rank! So a big shout out for Amrita Misra, Anindya, Atul, Sam, Saumy, Shalzy, Shalini, Raj, Ruchie, Deepa, Srikanth and there are many more to name.

So THANK YOU EVERYONE

Bluey Back to Eating Mode

Teething in kids can be a huge thing. Specially if your kid has started teething late. Bluey’s teething started a little late around 11 months and for close to three months he had stopped eating, like really stopped eating any meal. He was just comfortable with milk and some occasional chewing on finger food. This situation can be pretty tough on a mom. He now has 4 full grown baby teeth, and three half sprouted lower ones. There are more popping up here and there, but the most satisfying part of it is- he is back to eating. He is having regular meals and enjoyed all the cakes and puddings that I made in September.

So THANK YOU GOD.

Thank you Indian Army

Terrorism, violence,  extremism, radicalism cannot be the way of life, even if a certain sections of a particular country think that way and want to make terrorism or extremism their way of life. The recent attack on Indian Jawans  in Uri, Kashmir was a terrorist act where 19 soldiers were killed. The soldiers of Indian Special forces carried out a surgical strike in areas of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to eliminate several terrorists and their launch pads. It’s for the Indian Army’s bravery, gallantry and valor that we sleep in peace at our homes. They sacrifice their sleep, their families, and their lives for us. And recent insensitive remarks by so called on screen heroes have saddened me. You have a Fawad Khan, who got all the popularity and fame in India, who goes back to Pakistan and thrashes India. And you have a Salman Khan defending people like Fawad Khan! Like seriously?? I have to do a separate post on this, I am so pissed with it.

So Indian Army and soldiers Big Thank you to you for keeping us safe and eliminating these nuisance!

Well that was September for me. How about you? How was your September? Let me know below.

Free yourself from Bill Payments with Freecharge

by tinabasu October 1, 2016
written by tinabasu

freechareg-mobile-wallet-app

If you have already not joined the mobile wallet bandwagon then you need to shake yourself up. Gone are the days when you stand in a queue for paying bills. Seriously that’s such a waste of time and energy. I don’t even remember when was the last time I had gone somewhere, stood in a queue and paid any bill.

Paying through internet baking is also becoming a passé. If you thought paying utility bills online or through phone are not secure and safe for your account – then you need to start using the mobile wallets. Freecharge is not just a recharging app, it’s a full-fledged mobile wallet.

What can you do on Freecharge, did you ask? Apart from recharging phone, you can pay most of your utility bills like electricity bills, gas bills, DTH bills, even split money among friends.

Freecharge User Experience

Freecharge offers great user interface & experience (UI/UX) and security and a team of 300 odd people are working round the clock to deliver consumers “first class experience”.

The fundamental principles that dictates UI/UX strategy for Freecharge is ‘No typing only tapping’ and the transaction should happen in less than 10 secs. The emphasis is on ‘faster checkouts’ in anything and everything consumer does in relation to payments. The features like ‘Bill Payment Reminder’ and ‘Auto Pay’ helps you to be in control and never miss out on anything.

Security

If you are worried about using your money on an app or online then check what Mr. Govid Rajan, CEO of Freecharge has to say – “security is our number 1 priority! We have been voted as India’s most secure start-up and the 2nd most preferred wallet”.

He adds, “Freecharge has built its own (in-house) risky transactions management platform and has a dedicated risk & security team that looks at patterns so that they are always ready to respond to any and every kind of fraudulent actions possible.” The Freecharge platform has been built purely on the basis of Indian data and not global data – which makes it even more robust and trustworthy.

He further adds – passwords of users are never stored in the Freecharge system. All passwords are encrypted using one way non-reversible keys which makes it impossible for abuse. Freecharge has actually assigned every single bank account of the country to pin codes and have a database of risky transaction pin codes.

The eye opening fact is that in terms of risky transactions Freecharge is at 1/7th of the Indian benchmark which is better than many top financial institutions.

Being Transparent with Customers

Freecharge invited a group of bloggers at their Bangalore office and demonstrated how they work. They were introduced to the Mission Control team which includes SRE, Dev Ops, cloud automation, cloud security & IT, the marketing group, the Analytics team, QA, The Design Mafia (UI & UX), the product managers, the payments team, the technology team, the mobile team! They also had a candid session with the CEO.

freecharge-blogger-meet-bangalore

Govind explained, to the bloggers, the systems at Freecharge are designed to study 500-600 parameters of the mobile phone and over time have become robust to raise flags when a suspicious transaction are recorded. Elaborating more, he gave example of the attack on Yahoo wherein Freecharge reached out to all its users who have a registered Yahoo account and made them to change their passwords.

He said that there are systems in place wherein ‘lock-out’ can happen if a consumer tries beyond ‘x’ times to login and is not able to login.

The wallet has very stringent protocols on wallet velocity, device fingerprinting, device encryption and identification and hold limits which are designed to trap and eliminate fraud.

The proprietary technology ‘On-the-Go-Pin’ (OTP) fulfills the RBI’S mandate for two-factor authentication and does not require even a single additional investment by retailers or a customer, making the transaction secure, swifter and in less than 10 seconds!

Varun Arora Sr. Product Manager for Risk and Frauds explained how Credit Card theft and Account Theft are part of the game. He clarified how they at Freecharge are performing high level fraud checks to minimize and tackle these attacks.

The bloggers also got to meet the Customer Service team. Mr Velu, AVP Operations explained most of the customer queries and complaints were addressed within 20 minutes that they came in throughout 24 hours of the day and 7 days a week. Which I think is prompt and speed needed for an industry dealing with finances of people.

What Else Can you Do with the Freecharge App?

  1. Freecharge supports15 Telecom services and 30+ Utility Brands
  2. They offer an offline payment mode
  3. WhatsApp money with Freecharge
  4. Donate money to NGOs using Freecharge Waller and get the certificate to claim tax exemptions.

Top 6 Bollywood Onscreen Siblings

Siblings stand for love, rivalry, banter and a lifelong friendship. Isn’t that true? I sometimes miss having a sibling. It’s nice to see the bond and connections that siblings share. This relationship has been celebrated on the silver screen innumerable times. Check out the Seven Memorable On-Screen Brother-Sister Jodis in Bollywood.

Here I am sharing some of my favorite on screen siblings from some recent Bollywood Movies.

Hrithik Roshan & Karisma Kapoor (Fiza)

Fiza, the strong and feisty sister trying everything possible to find her brother, lost during the riots and inclined towards extremism, was a touching story. The characters played beautifully by Karisma and the then young and hugely popular Hrithik Roshan.

Genelia D’Souza & Partiek Babbar (Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na)

She was a big sister and a friend. She made other friends and moved on and he became a recluse, yet he was always there for her – also the first one to spot the farce of her fiancé. This brother-sister Jodi was a cute one.

Ranveer Singh & Priyanka Chopra (Dil Dhadakne Do)

There was nothing regular in this movie or this bro-sis pairing. Kabir and Ayesha were real people with real problems. They could fight with each other over ice-creams yet they understood each other better than their parents. Kabir stood up for his sister when her parents didn’t. I loved this pairing in this combination.

Kareena Kapoor Khan & Suniel Shetty (Chup Chup Ke)

Kareena Kapoor’s mute portrayal of Shrutie was cute and that time Shahid and Kareena were an item so that was the USP of this Priyadarshan film. But the best part was the brother-sister story between Suniel Shetty and Kareena where the otherwise tough brother was all soft and mush when it came to his sister’s happiness.

Divya Dutta & Farhan Akhtar (Bhaag MIlkha Bhaag)

The big sister protects her kid brother like a mother. They both loved and cared for each other. The young Milkha doesn’t think twice to protect his sister from her husband’s torture. Years later when he visits her in his Indian Team Blazer she is overwhelmed with joy and pride. A very touching brother-sister story in here making all of us weep!

Hrithik Roshan & Kanika Tiwari (Agneepath)

Can you forget the innocence on the girl’s face each time she faced the camera. I loved her act. Vijay the big brother was made to stay away from his baby sister but that didn’t deter him to shower his love. Every time the song ‘Abhi mujh mein kahin’ song plays I have moist eyes because of Sonu Nigam’s soulful voice and thinking about these two played so beautifully by Hrithik and little Kanika. (Well for Hrithik, he is SUPERB playing anything).

I seriously need to write more fiction. I miss writing them, so much so that I keep thinking about situations – almost all the time, in the shower, while enjoying a cup of coffee or even before sleeping.

I am responding to the Friday Reflections prompt – I was desperately looking for something to trigger a few lines from myself. Thanks Sanch and Write Tribe for the prompt. I chose the photo prompt too go ahead with.

So here it is

Friends

“Nice Breeze.”

“Yes.”

“It feels good to be here.”

After a short pause Neil looked up to her and watched her gazing at the tiny boats.

Debbie turned towards him and caught him staring at her, unaware.

“How have you been?” He asked.

“Good, life is nice”

“How is she?”

“Yes she is good, busy with her life now”. She replied emphasizing on ‘her’.

Many moments passed between them looking out into the distance, with some little conversations and many unspoken words.

Her hair strands were fluttering and brushing up against his face. Neil had known this scent. Neil had spent years thinking about what he had done.

“I am sorry”, he whispered.

She had nothing to say, she could only look into his eyes. She had always wanted to know why. Why he did what he did two decades back. But still couldn’t ask.

“I got carried away, I was distracted”, he said.

“I don’t want any explanation”. But she wanted to know, why he did that.

“Debbie, I have to tell you, I was an arse. I wanted more from life. I was scared to take up all that responsibility”

Debbie knew it in her heart, the man she had loved didn’t have it in him to stand by her side when she needed. She had gone ahead and given birth to their daughter, brought her up single handedly yet had forgiven him, didn’t have any bitterness for him, for she loved him too much.

When she received her mom’s email about the demise of Neil’s wife a month back, she knew she had to come over and meet him. She knew, he needed her. As nothing else, but a friend. They had known each other for ever and understood each other better than anyone else. Yet they had drifted apart without a word.

After twenty years, now when she was sitting next to him, at their usual spot, where they had spent innumerable days, she didn’t feel any bitterness. Nor did she long for his love. She wanted to be there with him not as his ex- girlfriend but as his true friend.

What is Love – Haiku #MondayMusing

by tinabasu September 20, 2016
written by tinabasu

I have been reading so many haiku poems in everyone’s blog, it was high time I attempted one. It took me some time to understand what this haiku is and how to check for the syllables and not the words.

What is a Haiku?

If you are as lazy and ignorant like me, or if you are hearing it for the first time – let me explain – or rather quote what WikiHow says about it

Haiku (俳句 high-koo) are short three-line poems with a 5-7-5 syllable structure that use sensory language to capture a feeling or image. They are often inspired by an element of nature, a moment of beauty, or another poignant experience.

Now thanks to @rohank01 and @shwetadave I do now know the 5-7-5 structure and with a lot of courage am attempting my first ever haiku. Since its first it has to be about LOVE.

So let me know if I am making sense. I’ll get better with it – promise.

P.S. I drafted this highlighting the syllables to keep track of the number of times I am using them! Did you start writing a haiku like that?

Love is like water,

Brings life to hearts it touches.

Without, you’re desert.

Short Fiction – The girl with a Lively Smile

by tinabasu September 19, 2016
written by tinabasu

short-fiction-tina-basu-girl-with-lively-smile-blog-adda-wow-prompt-micro-fiction

She stood there and looked at the girl – the girl with a lively smile.

The girl looked happy, carefree. Her smile radiated joy – joy of just living a blissful life.

She turned and looked at the other girl now.

Who is she? Where is the lively smile?

Smita’s moist eyes caught the glimpse of just one thing common in the two girls – the twinkle in their eyes.

Smita had not lost the twinkle in her eyes even after what she endured over the last three years.

She looked radiant and lively in the photo from the Fresher’s Party that sat on top of the table in her tiny room along with some books on life. But when she looked at the mirror she saw a different person.

‘Her life is ruined. What will she do now? How are we going to get her married?’

There were too many questions after the incident. Her own parents failed her. They failed to be strong for her, when she needed them the most. Instead, they fell prey to the pressures of society.

‘Was getting your daughter married the only purpose of your life?’ She had wanted to ask, but never could do that.

The physical pain was agonizing but these emotional pain was excruciating.

Was it her fault she was famous in college for her being the beauty with brains?

All that was gone in seconds.

Smita had a chill running down her spine every time that incident replayed in her mind. All she remembered was the burns, the pain, the screams and the blurred memory of that boy – the boy who threw acid on her.

What was her fault? She had just said no to his advances.

Yet when everyone had written her off, she decided to help herself. She didn’t want to get pulled down by the society. She became indifferent to the comments and stares people gave her. She knew what her own relatives wished for her. She had overheard her aunt telling ‘she will only be at peace if she jumps into the river, what is left of her now?’

But Smita was stronger than they all could imagine of her. She was determined not to lose this race – the race of life.

Today she had relocated to a different city – she was on her own.

She opened a blank notebook – and paused for a moment. Yes this is the life she had chosen now. Smita chose to leave everything behind and restart her life. She was now, working to rebuild lives of girls like her.

“Dear Diary,

This is your new partner. Yes, I am the girl with a scarred face but I am still the girl with a lively smile. I will make sure the other girls at the NGO will feel this smile even if they can’t see it. No they are not ruined. I will give them hope.”

Smita”
