5 Tips for Growing Hair Long Faster

how-to-grow-hair-long-faster-5-tips-for-growing-hair-long-faster

I have a fascination for long hair ever since I was a kid. However, my mom always ensured I never grew anything beyond a bob! But when I reached my teens or an age where I could refuse, I told a BIG no to the bi monthly hair cut trips to the salon.

Long hair requires some amount of care an nurturing – but it doesn’t have to be very time consuming nor do you have to invest in a ton of products. I have been wearing my hair long for quite a few years now. My hair is naturally straight but fine. The length has been below the shoulders for several years. I was quite famous in college for straight long hair.

It’s only now that I have not had a hair cut in 1 year almost and have grown my hair below my waist. That’s pretty long hair. Today I am going to share 5 Tips for Growing Long Hair without much investment or tons of products.

Watch what you eat

Hair strands are protein blocks and the health of your hair is more about what you intake than what you apply on it. Fish is high is Omega 3 fatty acids which is known to be great for hair and skin. You will notice people from regions who include fish in their regular diet have great hair.

amla-indian-goose-berry

Another great ingredient for overall health of hair is amla or Indian Gooseberry. You can have the readymade juice available in market or crush some fresh amla and have the juice. Apart from these avocado, eggs, chia and flax seeds, curry leaves and nuts all help in faster hair growth.

Go Easy on Hairwash

Too much shampoo and hair wash strips essential oils from the hair strands and make them dry resulting in breakage. Say NO to shampooing everyday even if it is recommended by brands on TV. If your hair is very oily then shampoo your hair after every 2-3 days. Use a mild sulfate free shampoo

Use Conditioner Correctly

It is important to use conditioner after using shampoo. But use conditioners correctly. While shampoo opens the cuticles of hair, a conditioner is meant to seal it back up locking in the nutrients. Use only a dime sized dollop of conditioner from the mid of the hair strands till the tip. Never apply conditioner on the scalp or at the roots of hair, unless it’s a messagable conditioner specially made for the scalp. If you apply conditioner on the scalp it will result in buildup of residual product and lead to breakage.

Never Underestimate Oils

Oil is one of the most essential foods for hair. It provides natural conditioning to the hair. But let’s face the truth no one likes the oily look. Oil your hair at night and let the roots soak in the goodness of oil, wash off in the morning.

castor-oil

I have some wonderful recipes of creating homemade oil that are far better than the store bought ones, I’ll share them in a future post. Castor oil (very very oily) is exceptionally good for faster hair growth.

What where you sleep

Your pillow cover has a hand in the health of your hair. When you sleep on a pillow with a cover made of cotton or similar fabric the friction cause while turning is high – this results in hair strands getting tangled and breakage. Try getting satin pillow case which reduces friction drastically. The satin pillow cases also help in keeping the hair strands smooth.

Do you have any more helpful tips to grow hair faster and minimize breakage? Let me know. I’ll be happy if you share some of your family secrets!

Can you trust someone anymore?

by tinabasu October 17, 2016
written by tinabasu

trust

Trust is a virtue according to me. If you can’t get someone to trust you then something is wrong somewhere. I try to give the benefit of doubt to people and trust them if they tell me something.  But I am not sure how right I am being in doing so.

The person in question this time is my house help. She has three sons, the youngest being 6 year old. She had once asked me for some money in advance citing children’s school fee, admission in new academic year etc etc etc.

She had told me, she works very hard so that her sons go to good school and I was hugely impressed with her commitment to education. According to her she sends her sons to an English medium school in my locality and children from our complex also go there. This again impressed me and I thought she was trying her best to give good education.

I always helped her financially whenever she asked for advance. She once asked for an old backpack, which I didn’t have that time. Upon asking she had said she required that for her son because his school bag was torn and they didn’t want to buy a new one.

I went ahead and bought a Doremon schoolbag for the little one and also one for his elder brother, because she said the middle one will feel jealous is he younger one uses a new bag!

Now the said maid is sick and has given me a replacement – who is her sister in law. I try to avoid all these maid gossips yet the things I got to know from this lady are quite startling. According to this sister in law – the maid had got the younger two sons in a school last year (she wasn’t even employed then at my place) but then didn’t continue their schooling, not even at the local government school. In the name of education and school fees, she has been collecting money from all households where she works for other expenses, including shopping for clothes and jewellery!

My tryst with maids have been bad. Read how I caught a maid for theft at my place.

This is something  that made me upset. I still don’t know who to trust – the maid or the sis-in-law. But I feel cheated  – not just with the money and help but I feel cheated of trust I had in her. I can’t do anything about it – rather I don’t want to do anything about it. Only thing I want to do is not lend a ear to all these pleas by the maids. Though only today I bought a new phone and handed over to this replacement sis-in-law because her phone broke and I don’t have a spare one that I can give her. I also ensured I told her that the money will be deducted from her salary. No more being lenient!

Read how another maid tried to take me for a ride here

Seriously I sometimes think – why people take you for granted and try to dupe you when you are being good to them. Is being good a bad thing or a passé already? Do you face such situations where you find it is difficult to trust people you work with? Let me know.

#FridayReflections – What I wanted to be, what I am doing

by tinabasu October 17, 2016

what-im-doing-now

Kids are dreamers aren’t they? They are explorers and their imagination can run wild. When you ask a child about what they want to become when they grow up you will find answers like Doctor, Astronaut, Scientist, Teacher and many others. They want to become someone they meet in person or read in books or watch on TV.

I was also the same. For the longest time in my child hood (or even in my early teens) I wanted to be a doctor. Mostly because my dad’s one. As a 6 year old though I was friendlier with colors. I cherished my sets of water color, coloring pencils, pastels and I was found coloring something or the other – including the walls. I don’t know if I wanted to be an artist that time, but I liked drawing, coloring.

The fascination with medical science stayed with me for long. I was good at first aid and thought I should know these things better than others. I did a lot of self-medication as well (which I think, now, is too bad – but who could stop a 10-12 year old anyway?)

I remember once I fell down in the school ground while running three-legged with another girl. Unfortunately that place also had some broken glass particles and consequently got some glass pieces inserted in both my knees. I limped to the sick room to get some first aid from the nurse and she cleaned and tied a bandage on the knees.

Back from school to an empty house meant I had to do some inspection on the bruises and figured out there were still little glass particles in the wound. So instead of cursing the nursing or calling up mum or dad for help I took it up on my hands to get rid of them. And guess what I did? I heated up a safety pin n the flame of a candle and used the tip of the pin to pull drag the glass particles out!!

Yeah I did a lot of such stuffs in my childhood – but haven’t harmed myself or someone else, just if you wanted to know!

There used to be an American channel which had loads of medical shows and I watched them religiously. It had a show called The Trauma Surgeons or something like that, I don’t remember now. It was about how trauma surgeons deal with patients in trauma, how these patients are operated on in a jiffy to save their life. I was extremely moved and inspired by that show and all I wanted to be was a trauma surgeon. Because I felt it required nerves and I had that.

But finally I didn’t pursue medicine as a career, not even remotely. Why did you ask? I hated MATHS. After the boards of 10th ( in which I did horribly in maths) I vowed not to see it’s face ever. I didn’t see any combination in the science stream which didn’t have maths in it. I simple changed into arts!!! Much to the shock of my parents. But the irony is some form of maths never left me. It stayed on with me till Post Graduation and even in career! Read the tryst with Statistics in my life here.

I never knew what this corporate culture is nor anything in marketing. Everyone in my family is an engineer and my dad’s a Urologist and consulting surgeon. But still I took up what life offered me. I was got interested in digital graphics and advertising some time while doing graduation. So I shifted to Bangalore to do a Post Grad in Media studies. Then went in to a FMCG company into trade marketing, which begun with design, communication and later went on to rolling out various marketing programs for the trade.

But the important part is never to stop dreaming. Now, I have quit the corporate world and am re-visiting all the things I love – writing, sketching everything. Now I have loads of plans for the future – in my own way – you know why? Because I can never sit idle and can never stop dreaming!

See I am even doodling these days!

Book Review: The Calling by Priya Kumar

by tinabasu October 17, 2016
written by tinabasu

the-calling-priya-kumar-author-note

There are some books that make you feel wonderful and give you a deeper connect. The book I am going to review today is just that. The Calling by Priya Kumar is in my words ‘a door to wisdom’ a read that you might not want to forget in a long time.

Book Blurb:

The Calling is a spiritual adventure. It is an encounter with the truth, the wisdom and the force that is innate to us all. At the brink of a divorce and personal breakdown, Arjun took a trip into the heart of the Himalayas, on the insistence of a sadhu, who predicted that the journey up to Hemkund Sahib would align him to his purpose and change his life forever. At every turn the mountains holds secrets and tests that urge Arjun to evolve into the person he had denied to be – himself. Pretenses, falsities, confusions and untruths fall apart as Arjun is forced to confront the mess he had created in his life. What started off as an opportunity to escape reality, turned out to be an opportunity to escape from the dwindling spiral of self-created misery. Filled with spiritual insights and sprinkled with light humor, this story will help you find your calling, your voice and who knows, even your true self.

The Story:

Arjun, a corporate guy is going through ups and downs in life. The complications in his personal and professional life have taken a tumultuous turn. At one hand he has his wife sending him a notice for divorce on the other hand he has humongous pressure on him at work. On a work trip to Shimla he meets with an accident but is miraculously saved by an elusive sadhu. Upon the sadhu’s  advice he sets on a trying journey to Hemkund Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage site, in the Himalayas, but little did he know what awaited him in the mountains.

He has the young and witty eighteen year old Chandu as his transporter and companion till the journey to the top. But everything that looks simple isn’t simple after all. Chandu is far more wise and sorted for his age. Is he a transporter at all? When Arjun discovers the truth he is shocked.

This journey for Arjun is not a journey for pilgrimage, this is his calling – the calling to find himself.

My Thoughts:

When I picked up the book, I knew the author is a motivational speaker and was expecting the book to be like how motivational speakers give speeches to uplift your mood. But I didn’t expect it to be like a fiction. And boy, what a journey it has been through this book.

The author has a beautiful handwritten note at the starting of the book and she says “We all came here for a reason bigger than going to work and making money”. This quote by her is a winner in my books at the onset. Yes life cannot be so mundane like going to work and money and running like a machine. We are losing things somewhere and we are not realizing what we are losing out.

I love fiction, but books like The Calling make you fall in love with the essence with which the book has been written. From the lines of wisdom that you find in the book to the writing style and buildup of characters – I can’t find a flaw.

At the starting of journey Chandy says

‘These mountains look still, sahib, but they are not. They move, they are alive, they speak, they share your soul’.

When you re-read that you know it has a deeper meaning.

Lessons worth sharing

The book has these pearls of wisdoms that are going to you inspire you. At the very beginning the author says the reader might find their Calling through this book. Which – to a great extent is true.

Every person in our world has a significant role in our purpose, especially those who are a part of your journey – your wife, your children, your colleagues. People are in our lives and our path for a contribution by virtue of who they are. When people’s purposes meet, then their paths align and they come together for a common purpose.’

Life doesn’t test you at your level; life tests you at a level higher that yourself. You don’t choose the test. That way you would have the choice to live small. The test is always a step ahead of you, so that in reaching beyond it, you grow beyond yourself.

Regret is to life like termite is to wood. It will eat you up. Confusion is to life like a parasite is to its host. It will consume you. Don’t continue selling your life and your soul to the highest bidder. For when you do, with that you sell your family, your dreams and your purpose.

In fact throughout the book, you will find many such pearls of wisdom.

About the Author

First let me start by saying – she has a wonderful handwriting – a handwriting that gives you some kind of feel good factor! And +1 for the personal note, I like when authors write a note.

the-calling-priya-kumar-author-note

Priya Kumar says she is an author, a speaker and dreamer – but I guess she has more to herself than that. She is a motivational speaker, columnist, corporate trainer, radio jockey and an author!

Spriya-kuamr-author-the-callinghe has written several books on motivation and The Calling is her eighth book.

She is the winner of six international awards and has been awarded the Women Leader in India, writer’s category. You can get more information about her on her website.

My Rating

This is nothing short of showing you the door to yourself so deserves a good 4.5 out 5 from me. Must read in my list.

Dear 16 Old Me

dear-16-year-me-letter-to-younger-self-blogadda-wow

Dear 16 year old me,

Let me begin by writing – you are awesome. Stay that way. Don’t worry about the future, it won’t be bad, I know. But don’t miss out on the good things in life now! It is your age to have fun – even if everyone in family and school is telling you to only and only concentrate on studies and board exams. All work and no play will make you a boring Tina. You don’t want that. So keep up the Yahoo chats, MSN chats on your PC. In a few years that will become obsolete anyway.

Don’t give up on your dance. Classical dance is not easy and you have given your life to learn this art form. Don’t give it up because of studies. Even if you can allot 30 minutes of your time in a day for dance practice, give that. You might not be able to perform across the country as you have been doing this while, but still dance for yourself. Once you stop t, later in future you will regret it. It’s not just an art – it’s who you are.

Don’t be so proud of your figure – I see you writing that in people’s slam books against “One thing you are proud of”. And it all has to do with the point I mentioned above. Once you stop dancing or practicing regularly figure that you are so proud of won’t stay the same way – given your affinity for sweets and all things desserts.

Life is bigger than friends in school, some rogue teachers that you don’t like, BOYS, why mom’s upset with you. They are all here in whatever way they are being with you for a purpose. They are all in some way trying to teach you what is good, what is bad, what is right and what is wrong. So if you face a heartbreak or not do good in maths – just know it’s okay.  You might want to wish ‘Happy Teachers Day’ to the wise old EXPERIENCE than Mrs xxx or Professor XXX someday.

Girls in school who are your best friends might not stay best friends in the following years – but still enjoy this phase – create memories. Once you grow up you will get less time to create memories like this.

Yes with all things said – board exams, getting into good college, higher studies FROM GOOD COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY will always be a big part of your life. You can’t evade that in this world. But know one thing – don’t lose the girl in you – the dreamer in you. Never stop dreaming even if that dream seems weird or bizarre. Because once you stop dreaming you become a machine running on some command.

Keep the little girl in you alive, dear mine. You will do just fine because whatever you do you can find happiness in it, so don’t worry. Live without the tension on future, I am there to watch your back in that case.

From
A wiser form of you.

All you Need to Know About Durga Puja – Mythological Reference, History

by tinabasu October 13, 2016

all-you-need-to-know-about-durga-puja-mythological-reference-history-legends-significance-of-10-hands-weapons

In my last post on Durga Puja, I told you how the festival is synonymous with Bengalis and how it’s a way of life for us. Today let me share with you some background history about the festival, the significance of the different weapons that the goddess holds, significance of the days and other things which one might not be familiar with.

Mythological Reference

It is said in Hindu Mythology that a demon named Mahishasura had once pleased Mahadev with his long and hard meditation and as a consequence Mahadev had blessed him that no man or deity would be able to kill him and his death was possible only in the hands of a woman. The arrogant Mahishasura high with his powers created devastation across the universe and captured the heavens driving away the gods. When nothing could stop him, Brahma , Vishnu and Maheshwar – the great trinity of Hindu Gods, came together to concentrate their pure energy in creating a goddess – Durga. She is the goddess of Shakti (power) – the one who will destroy evil and protect goodness.

Akal Bodhon

Akal Bodhon is the worship of Goddess Durga in the month of Ashwin. Akal means untimed (kaal – time, A –not) and Bodhon means worship. And this Akal bodhon has a mythological significance again. Originally Durga Puja is celebrated in the Hindu month of Basant on Basant Panchami. In Ramayana, however, Lord Ram decides to seek blessings of Devi Durga before his battle with the demon king Ravana. That was not the time for worshiping Puja. But he goes ahead with the untimely worship (akal bodhon) to seek Her blessings. Ever since that time this Akal Bodhon has become popular with mankind and man decided to follow Lord Ram and celebrate this untimely worship or Akal Bodhon in the biggest way possible than the actual worshiping month.

Significance of Three Eyes & Weapons in her Ten hands

Goddess Durga is the one with 10 hands which signifies that she protects everyone from 10 directions, or from every direction because she is the savior and protector of goodness from evil. She like Mahadev also has three eyes with the third eye in the center of her forehead, for which she is also called Triyambake – or the goddess with three eyes. In Bengali language she is called ‘Trinayani’. The three eyes  represents the powers of universe – the left eye represents desire (the moon), the right eye represents action (the sun), and the central eye knowledge (fire).

Not many know that all the 9 weapons that the goddess Durga holds in her ten hands (she hold 1 with two of her hands) have a story behind it. It is said, in mythology, that every god blessed her with a weapon for a specific task.  While Mahadev gave her a trident, Lord Varun gave her a conch shell, while Vishnu gave her his eternal ‘Sudarshan chakra’ Indra gave her his thunderbolt. There are enough resources on these histories and you can read here and here. No point in my writing the same again. All the Mahalaya programs on Bengali channels show these mythological stories year after year, so every Bengali knows by heart!

What we see today

Durga Puja during the 18th century was celebrated in the households of zamindars and jagirdars as they were the crème of the society under British Raj. Local people visited these pujas and worshipped the deity in these zamindar’s houses. These were called the ‘Bonedi Barir Pujo’. Later with modernization and disintegration of the ‘Babu Culture’ of Kolkata, the ‘Barowari’ puja or the community puja which are organized by the public or groups of people. This transition from household puja to a community puja has been a long one. Now you have a Durga Puja in every nook and corner of Kolkata or anywhere in Bengal. The Barowari festival is organized with funds raised from the public at large through donations or subscriptions. But now you have corporates and brands sponsoring heavily in exchange of visibility of their brands. You can understand their scope of marketing when you have millions of footfall at a single area on any given time, any given day during the Durga Puja.

Durga Puja is equally popular among non-Bengalis because of its extravagant celebrations. Read how Mayuri enjoyed her Durga Puja this year, inspite of being a Punjabi.

Deepa from Kreativemommy shares a photo blog on how she celebrated Durga Puja this year. She isn’t a Bengali either but participated in the Pujas like any other Bong including the much coveted ‘sindur khela‘.

Theme Puja

For last few years though Durga Puja in Kolkata has become a race for Theme Puja. Every club and every association decides on a theme and their idols, pandals, lighting, decoration every damn thing is according to the theme. While some are tastefully done some can be bizarre and really weird. Last year I was in Kolkata and witnessed some of these weird themes – Have a look.

kolkata-theme-pujo-durga-puja

This was last years Durga Idol and decoration of Tala Barowari Club and their theme was ‘Hybridashuramardini’ as is hybrid-mahishashura-mardini. Entire decoration was made from sheets of steel and everything was a hybrid. Can you spot the hybrid between an elephant and whale, Dinosaur and rooster? Weird but creative.

kolkata-theme-pujo-durga-puja2

This was the Durga Puja by Chetla Agrani Club, which is quite famous for their different themes. Entire pandal and decoration was on theme of masonry – so everything was used in decoration – drums, scrap metal, masonry tools. Creative isn’t that.

In my next post I will be discussing about the significance of each day of the Durga Puja and the rituals that are followed during the Puja.

P.S.  I have been trying to do a Durga Puja series and write everyday about Puja – but can a Bengali really sit and write during Durga Puja and not be present at a puja. That’s what happened with me. Durga Puja is over but my posts are not. But what the heck – why not finish what I started. So read even if the Puja is over.
