Why you should always maintain Blog Commenting Etiquette

blog-commenting-etiquette-how-to-comment-on-blogpost-blogging-tips

Comments on blog posts are not merely your views about a post. Comments are way more powerful for your blog’s health than you think. When I started blogging way back in 2011 (in an earlier Blogger blog) I wasn’t very serious about reading or commenting. But over the years I have learnt the powers of reading and commenting on other blogs.

How Comments Help your Blog?

Backlinks – When you are commenting on some other blog it create backlinks to your blog which is good for your blog authority. The WordPress Comment form by default has a section for adding your website URL. But note, most of these are no follow links so you can’t expect a drastic change in traffic. But if you are a newbie blogger or your site is new this helps in indexing your page.

SEO – When you comment on blogs that follow do-follow comment policy or uses widgets like Top Commentators – you can drive traffic to your site.

Build Relationship with bloggers – Blogging is much about the community than just you writing on your blog. A blogger must step out of their silos and start build relationships and network with other bloggers. This ensures you have readers, followers, good discussion.

Now with all that said let’s come to the kind of comments you often see on your blog.

“Nice post!” “Nice one!” “Good one” “That’s nice” “Happy to connect” and tons of other one liners,  or should I say, mono syllable comments are often found waiting at the moderation list. Personally speaking – these turn me off completely.

Like how we maintain certain decorum at a work gathering or at a social do, a blogger expects to maintain decorum in his/ her blog. Thus it is also the duty of others to maintain certain etiquette while commenting on other’s blogs /sites.

DO NOT Post one or two word Comments – It’s a Sin

Let’s admit it, a blogger spends enough time and effort to write a post, make graphics, do SEO tweaks and when they find a comment like ‘Happy to Connect’ or ‘Nice One’ it’s depressing and sometimes offensive. It gives an impression that the reader is commenting only because he /she wants to create a backlink or just for the heck of commenting. Do not do this on all blogs, you will earn a bad name in the blogging community.

In my case, when I get a comment like that, I don’t approve it and I never visit back that blog.

It is important that you read the post for the same reason I mentioned above. Make your comment relevant to the post. Your comment should have a few lines about the post and then may be some point to add value to it, or your experience.

The much acclaimed blogger Jaibala from My School of Thoughts says

“I have a rule to say 3 lines about the post, or a minimum of 2. If I can’t say two lines I go back and re-read, because there cannot be nothing in the post”

Do Comment on the Post if you are joining a Link Party

Many bloggers join link parties where you link up your post – in return you get visitors, traffics, comments from our bloggers joining the link party. But do you take time to read on the post by the host of the link party? If you are not reading and commenting on that very post – you are in return upsetting a host.

Do read and comment on the very post that contains the link up. It is understood if you can’t read and comment on all the posts in the Link up, since some of them can have more than 100 link ups, but make sure you are commenting on the posts by the host and co-host (if any).

DO NOT Drop your Post Links

While commenting on a post DO NOT drop the link to your blog post. This gives an impression you are hungry for attention (read Traffic). When you drop a link of your post it is considered inorganic traffic by the bots of search engines. Too much of inorganic traffic is not good for your blog’s health. Instead, drop the URL of your site. In that way you are creating backlink yet not alerting the search bots that you are dropping a link.

Most bloggers have plugins for filtering spam comments which send all comments with huge links to the spam folder. And one might not check the spam folder at all – we all get tons of spam comments anyway. Here’s what ‘s sitting in my spam folder currently.

spam-comment

Note – Install CommentLuv in your site so that it can fetch the link for the latest post of the commentator. This way no one has to drop a link!

If you are commenting on a Blogger blog you can use Name a URL option and use your blog’s URL there.

Famous Blogger Corinne from Everyday Gyan says

Blog commenting is simply a matter of good manners. Don’t do what you wouldn’t do when you meet someone face to face:
1. Not listen to them – in blogging terms, not read their post.
2. Be eager to press on them your visiting card or opinion, without acknowledging theirs – in blogging, terms commenting only to link drop.
3. Make a meaningless responses to their conversation – in blogging terms, make a meaningless response like ‘Good post’ as if you’re grading an exam paper!
Be attentive, be polite and be meaningful.

Don’t Use Anchor Texts in Comments

Some people use anchor texts with HTML codes while commenting. That is in a way dropping a link. As long as you are using your name or at max your blog’s name as the anchor text it’s okay but the moment you start writing a 5 word Anchor Text it’s considered rude. It’s like you are begging for a link.

Eg. Tina Basu or Tinkling Tina Cooks as an Anchor text is okay. But writing Twinkling Tina Cooks – The Best Food Blog from India is likely to send this comment to the spam folder.

Be Compassionate

Blogging is not war and thus no one should be offensive while commenting. Do not use foul language even if you don’t like something written. Just think – would you like to get such a comment in your blog?

Constructive criticism is always better than insulting someone. So be polite in your criticism.

Read. Comment. Share

When you read a post it is expected you will comment on it – whatever you felt about it. Don’t simply read and leave a post. Let the author know if you liked it or even if you thought otherwise. Every blogger likes feedback – no question on it.

If you liked the post or you think it is relevant to your readers – share it on your social media.

Note – To ease this sharing on your blog you can install social media sharing buttons there are plenty available on the net.

Reply to Comments you get

It is a good practice to reply to the comments that you get on your own blog posts. Wordpress by default notifies if someone has replied to their comment. It is always better if that reply is just not a Thank you! This is where you are building a relationship with readers.

If you are on Blogger you can revisit the blogs where you have left a comment and check for a reply.

Don’t Make it Hard to Comment on Your Blog

Everyone likes comment in their posts. Don’t make it hard for a reader to comment. Remove the multilayered captchas as much as you can. You can always moderate the comments. But going through the different windows of captchas make it difficult for a reader to comment on your blog. You can embed a Disqus or Facebook commenting system as well to make it easier.

With all that said – what is utmost importance is to enjoy reading as much as writing. I am embarking on a new journey where I blog and share with my Blog Buddies – Vikram, Kadambari, Deepali, Pooja, Aseem Geethica  & Seema. We are going to maintain the ehalth of our blogs together – reading, commenting, sharing, inspiring to write regularly, motivating each other when you face the dreaded Writer’s Block! In a nutshell we are going to watch our backs and that is why we are Expecto Patronum!

Expecto Patronum

Much like Harry, we all are conjuring up our own Patronus to watch over each other. How cool is that? We are going to share our posts with the hashtag #PatronusBuddies on Twitter and Instagram. So do watch out for us.

Not to mention, I wish best to all the Blog Buddy teams. We are all flowers of the same bouquet and together we make it look beautiful. So three cheers for the Blogging Community! *Takes out the invisible wand and  says aloud EXPECTO PATRONUM!*

So we gorged on delectable home-made restaurant quality food – mom style. There was mutton chanp, Chingri Malaikari, Chitol Kalia – a gastronomic pleasure! All of these will be posted in the food blog – so don’t worry Continued With Food at Barbeque Nation Barbeque Nation – the famous barbeque fine dining chain – has open right opposite our apartment. And given how big foodies we are how can we not have a Sunday Barbeque feast. Whenever I am at a BBQN I always instruct the servers – ONLY FISH, CHICKEN, PRAWNS ON THE GRILL. Yes I am a carnivore and I don’t want corn on the cob, mushrooms, pineapples, or anything vegetarian sitting in the skewers on my grill! I had 12 prawns yesterday! Okay they weren’t jumbo prawns. The only vegetarian started I like in BBQN is the Cajun Spiced Potato – so that little bit of that. Even Bluey enjoyed some Tandoori Fish and French Fries. But he didn’t like any dessert! Instead licked on a lollipop for a while! Gardening I absolutely love gardening – sowing seeds, watering watching the flowers bloom. I am currently having three varieties of rose in my container garden – a scarlet, a pink and white blend and yellow. The scarlet ones are pretty huge and they are blooming currently. I am growing some herbs and vegetables for the kitchen – organic and pesticide free. Did You Know – Mint is extremely easy to grow? Anyone can grow it. I’ll do a post on it. I replanted some mint this weekend. Falling in love with pencil and paper again Shinjini a.k.a Modern Gypsy inspired me to get me back to the art mode again. I had not sketched, doodled, painted with a pencil or color on paper for a long long time. Digital art had taken over everything – even professionally. But I started picking up the pencil again and made some sketches. This is what I did this Saturday. Inspiration from Google though! Started a New Book My last romance read – After You by Jojo Moyes was a disaster. I had loved Me Before You – the first book of the series but this book only made it clear why you shouldn’t write a sequel unnecessarily. It went so out of place I left in between for quite some time and finished it only because I wanted to get over with it! So now I started with The Girl Who loved a Pirate by Kulpreet Yadav. I am switching back to reading thriller and mystery – that’s my favorite genre. I hope this will be good.

No time for Me – MicroFiction

lonely-old-man-staring-out-of-a-window

He sat by the window gazing at the distance, like every other day.

This is what life has come to be!

Some were sitting on the couch, some reading a book. Della played on the piano as sweetly as she did all the time.

But he couldn’t accept what life had thrown him into. He got secluded ever since he arrived here. He had developed a tendency to remain silent through the day. He hardly ever spoke. The thought of living in this house made him mad.

The unhinged man was hurt inside, he had a loving wife once. They had a sweet little log cabin by the lake. Their three sons were their world. Now she was gone and the boys had their own lives. They left him here.

Their symbolic phone calls every Christmas disgusted him. He had given his entire life for his family and their well-being. Now no one has time for him!

How to manage health issues without ruining family finances?

by tinabasu October 21, 2016
written by tinabasu

“A helpless and ailing father lying on a bed, mother doing household chores in neighbour’s house and a child who is selling flowers on the roads”— after reading this line, you might be thinking that here I am discussing a Bollywood film. After all, the story of most of the Hindi films revolves around this idea only. But, there are many sad stories of families broken financially in real life also. In fact, many of us have experienced the situation, or at least know friends or neighbours who have piled on debt, sold their properties and occasionally sacrificed their career to take care of their ailing loved one.

Are you sure your family is safe from the exorbitant medical expenses? The answer is that every family carries this risk. Here I suggest some steps to curtail the risk and protect the future of a family from high medical costs.

1. Be careful on roads, and go for a personal accident cover to get double protection:

Though, you are a responsible driver who has years of driving experience, you can’t rule out the fact that many a times accidents happen not because of your fault but due to the carelessness of other drivers on the road. What is devastating is watching your family struggling with medical expenses if, god forbid, you are involved in an accident.

Source: The Times of India

Though it is good to follow traffic rules, like wearing seat belts, avoiding rash driving, etc. it is useful to go one step further and buy a personal accident cover which provides compensation in case of disability or loss of life. As personal accident cover is not limited to motor accidents only, you should go for the policy, even if you seldom come out of your home because accidents can happen while climbing stairs or playing football with friends.

2. Buy health insurance when you don’t want it because you may not get it when you need it:

To get easy premium rates, you should buy a health insurance when you are young and free from medical complications. Also, if you buy health insurance now, then you can get maternity coverage also, which in most of the cases comes with a waiting period of 2 to 4 years. Even if your company is offering health insurance, it is pertinent to buy an individual policy. This will ensure coverage even if you change jobs or your employer discontinues the policy at any point of time. Further, it would be much easier to continue renewing the policy you hold than buying an expensive policy with limited coverage after retirement.

benefits-of-health-insurance

While choosing the policy, make sure to go with the one covering out-patient department (OPD) expenses, like doctor’s visit fees, pathological tests, medicines, etc. An OPD is one of the hospital departments where patients get medical treatment without staying overnight. Due to the rising medical costs, most of the people avoid visiting doctors, and here the OPD cover can come to your rescue. It covers non-hospitalisation expenses for medicine, medical checkup, etc.

3. Critical ailments can strike anyone, irrespective of age and health:

Due to the sedentary lifestyle, the incidence of critical ailments like cancer, kidney failure, heart issues, etc.; is rising at an alarming pace in India. These critical ailments not only affect physically but financially as well. The most disturbing fact is that people under 35 years of age are also grappling with these ailments. According to insurance estimates, 40% of heart patients belong to the age bracket of 25-35 years.

critical-illness-in-india

Source: The Economic Times

But what if the breadwinner is diagnosed with a critical ailment and he/she loses the job? Besides medical treatment, there are household expenses, loan EMIs, child fees, etc.; for which money is required. As a breadwinner of the family, it is important to buy a critical illness cover which offers a lump sum amount on the diagnosis of any of the critical ailments mentioned in the policy document. The amount can be used to meet both medical and household expenses. This is a sort of compensation for the pain endured. If there is a family history of critical ailments or you have a fear of such ailments, you should definitely go for a critical illness insurance cover.

4. Boost your health cover with super top-up plans:

What if you have a health insurance policy, but you exhaust the limit? It means you have to pay the remaining amount from your pocket. To avoid this situation, it is good to boost your health insurance cover with super top-up plans which cover the expenses when the threshold limit of the current health insurance policy is over.

health-cover

Source: The Economic Times

Moreover, as super top-up plans consider the ‘total amount’ of the bills in a year, and not the single instance, they give much wider coverage as compared to top-up plans. For instance, you have a health insurance policy of Rs 5 lakhs and a top-up health cover of Rs 10 lakhs with a threshold limit of Rs 5 lakhs. In this case, your top-up will help you only if your medical expenses exceed Rs 5 lakhs. However, if you have two separate medical bills of Rs 4 lakhs each, the top-up will not help you because none of the bills has crossed the threshold limit, which is Rs 5 lakhs in this case. Here, super top-up plans can come to your rescue. If you also have a super top-up plan of Rs 10 lakhs with a threshold limit of Rs 5 lakhs, the above two medical bills of Rs 4 lakhs will be covered, as the total bill amount (i.e., 4+4= 8) has crossed the threshold limit, which is Rs 5 lakhs. Moreover, you can buy super top-up plans even if you don’t have any health insurance policy.

5. Stay healthy and earn rewards:

If you think that your fitness regime can only shed extra fats, then health insurance companies in India are here to prove you wrong. Insurers incentivise policyholders to stay healthy by doling out rewards. Various insurance companies reward their policyholders with wellness points for pursuing any of the healthy activities like running, jogging, joining yoga/gym, quitting smoking, etc.

healthy-life-tips

By keeping a healthy lifestyle, you earn points which can be further redeemed to avail services which are not covered by your health insurer like medicines cost, consultation charges, dental expenses, etc.

6. Create an emergency fund:

Though, the above-mentioned insurance policies will help you tide over any financial emergency, it is good to create an emergency fund, which is nothing but savings parked in liquid assets to be used during a medical crisis. Remember, the return is not important here and what is more critical is that the money should be easily available whenever a need arises. You can keep a month’s expenses in a savings account, and the remaining in liquid funds which are short-term fund schemes from where money can be withdrawn without any extra loading charges.

Finally, eat healthy and exercise regularly because these are the only mantra to stay healthy and live a richer and healthier life.

Should I take up a Trek to the Everest Base Camp?

by tinabasu October 21, 2016
written by tinabasu

everest-base-camp-trek-itinerary-mojhi

Are you a beach person or a hill person? I am definitely a hill person. I love everything from little cozy hill stations to snow-caped rugged mountains. Isn’t everything very serene and laid back about hills and mountains.

The book, I just finished was so much about the Himalays and it makes me feel like taking a trip to the majestic Himalayas, to find my calling may be. But I have been getting an urge to get to know the mountains from a closer quarter.

My last trip to Nepal (long back) we had a pretty laid back tour, visiting temples, gazing at peaks, some shopping. Now I don’t know how the tourism situation is in Nepal after the aftermath of earthquakes, but I still want to visit again and make it a trip of a lifetime.

A trip to the Everest Base Camp has been a long time wish. I know I don’t have it in me to climb the Everest peak, but a visit to the base camp will be an experience in itself. More than the excitement of trekking and altitude – it will be an opportunity to know the local culture, their traditions.

Someone suggested me this travel site called Mojhi.com which has some great itinerary for Everest Base Camp treks. While surfing through the details I came across some  Everest Base Camp Treks which looks promising. The 13 day Trek is said to be the one with a moderate difficulty level.

Apart from Mt. Everest, one can get to see other peaks too like Mt. Lhotse (8516m.), Mt. Makalu (8462m.), Mt. Nuptse (7861m.), Mt Cho Oyu (8201m.). White in it most was one gets to see the Sherpa cultures and traditions closely and live amongst them.

This classic trek starts at Jiri (1905m) which one has to reach from Kathmandu. The walk is through the banks of Dudh Koshi River reaching up to its foundation The Gokyo Lake.

Here is how the itinerary looks like.

everest-base-camp-trek-itinerary-mojhi

So what do you think about a trek to the Everest Base camp people? Do you think I should take it up and get richer – in experience and get some wisdom? Aren’t these adventures the best way to learn?

Would you be brave enough to travel in this kind of a rugged terrain just to get the high of setting off for the unknown? Let me know your thoughts about this.
