5 Apps You are Thankful for | #ThankfulThursdays Week 13

by tinabasu January 27, 2017
written by tinabasu

Last week we had a lot of fun with our nature prompt. There’s no way we can miss nature in our daily lives – and if you are giving nature or natural things a miss then you are at the losing end, my friend. I told you in my Weekend Diaries Post that I was revamping my balcony garden. And I am happy to share I have successfully revived two of my dead plants. That’s how cool nature is, always by your side. I’ll share the story in a separate post.

But there’s a lot of news I want to share.

We are expanding #ThankfulThursdays and spreading a lot of love. Both me and Amrita thought it would be great to make our Thankful community bigger and Mayuri from Sirimiri and Deepa from Kreativemommy are going to join our community and co-host #ThankfulThursdays with us henceforth. So it’s going to be bigger and mightier!

thankful-thursdays-team

Watch out for the first week of the month #ThankfulThursdays post for a little surprise from us. You are going to enjoy it, I can assure you on that.

Now time for another fun prompt. This week we have not one but two prompts. You can write on both or anyone of them and link at the submission form below.

I am completely dependent on my iPhone and now the iPad for almost everything I do – online or offline. I hardly visit stores to get things for the house – it’s a waste of time and energy. If not for apps it would be a very hard time for me and the work that I am doing. Now there’s Gmail, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, that one uses these days like oxygen. Of course I am always online on these, so I’ll skip chosing a favourite between these – ALL ARE GREAT! But let me tell you about the other apps that are pretty helpful and I won’t be able to work without them.

5 Apps I am Thankful For

WordpressImage result for wordpress app

While I was on Blogger I tried a lot to post from the phone but was never happy with it.I
t was very very basic. However, the Wordpress app is a life savior when you are on the go.  It is extremely helpful to reading, commenting, liking, replying on posts through the app. It directly takes you to the web dashboard too – which I think is very helpful. When I am posting from the device I use both the app and web dashboard to have a decent looking post. Without the Wordpress app

It is free to use and available on Android and iOS.

Buffer

buffer-instagram-scheduling

When you are a blogger you know how much social media presence mean to you. Unless you are present in social media you are living on Mars. And constantly updating your feed can get tiresome. I can’t thank enough to the makers of this app for the ease and functionality that they bring to a blogger or anyone present on social media. I schedule tweets, FB posts and even Instagram posts (sometimes – I prefer something else for scheduling Instagram, actually!). You can schedule and forget about it because Buffer will take care of it.

Buffer is available on iOS and Android both and you can sync three social media accounts under their free plan. It’s such a useful app that if you have to upgrade to use more than three accounts I am sure you won’t regret that.

Camera Awesome

Related image

If you are a food blogger then you got to have this app. Inside story – no food photo is posted online just like that without some editing. Some people even Photoshop photos before posting them on Instagram. It gives you a lot of freedom in choosing depth of field, better exposed photos. You will forget the regular phone camera once you have this. It’s available on iOS and Android both.

Canva

Image result for canva app

A person like me can’t post a photo without some styling to it. And when I say photo I mean all kinds of photos and graphics. Canva is simply awesome if you don’t know PS and other photo editing softwares. It’s free and you can create practically everything. When I need a quick fix on a photo/ graphic on the phone Canva is my go to place. But when I am on my laptop nothing can beat Photoshop and Illustrator ( they give much more flexibility). If you are not using Canva already, go sign up now.

Amazon

Image result for amazon app ios

Now, what can I say about Amazon. I sometimes even search for things like safety pin and paper clip on the amazon app if I don’t find any at home. I get most of the household stuff from Amazon and almost every other day I have an Amazon delivery guy ringing my bell. Going to stores has become history for me – not just for deals but just to save the time and petrol and parking fee! Not just the Amazon app but also the Kindle app is a life savior when you have a toddler who wants to take away your book every time you want to read. I read most of my books on the kindle app in the iPad.

Those were my Favorite Top 5 apps on the device. Let me know which are yours.

Image result for india republic day wallpaper

Today India celebrated the 68th Republic Day. For me the Republic Day has been synonymous with waking up and watching the parade on DD National since childhood. Today was no different. Only I had someone running around and not wanting to have breakfast!!

It is nice to be living in a free country – you may have different political opinions and may be having a lot of criticism for the nation, the government, the system – but at the end of the day you are not living in a country that’s ruled by some rouge military general or some religious leaders! Imagine if you were living in North Korea! When compared to that – you are living in heaven!

My son is going to be one and a half in two days and I want to instill in him the respect for his nation. If you can’t respect your parents and your nation then you cannot be a better human being (that’s what my wisdom says). While the National Anthem was being played at the end of the parade I picked up my son and sang the anthem to him. He probably doesn’t realise what’s happening around but for a minute at least he was silent and watched what was happening in the TV. The Mom in me has the solace in it – at least I could make him participate in the anthem.

How did you spend your Republic Day? Are you thankful that India is a Republic? Let me know.

10 Moments you won’t miss if you were smooth – Epilation Wonders

by tinabasu January 21, 2017
written by tinabasu

SMOOTH-SKIN

Don’t you think it’s the worst when you want to do something yet you are compelled to cancel all that? A last-minute opportunity to have fun, an invite from friends, a fun party, a smoothie with your crush…but you have to miss out because you’re, how do I put it, not at your smoothest! Yes, I am talking about the girly problem – hell no nothing to do with menstruation – those in-between days are worst when you have stubbles all over.  Not enough for the salon appointment yet not a smooth skin.

Stubble means you can’t wear your favorite outfit, and you just feel you have to say no to that exciting invitation. But what if we could get smooth skin without much trouble and without spending lot of time? It definitely would be a much better place. You don’t have to miss out on anything because of the uglies.

Here let’s celebrate 10 Moments you won’t have to miss out if your skin is smoooooth; because with Braun epilators, you can be silky smooth at a moment’s notice!

1.POOL PARTIES

New bikini? Check. aimg_9227

Shades? Check.

But do you have smooth skin? Are you having little stubbles around?

With epilation you can get smooth skin in a moments time.

Now we’re ready to dive right in!

2. WEARING THAT NEW DRESS NOW!

It’s the one you’ve had your eye on for ages. The one that will catch your crush’s eye, and make you feel FAB-U-LOUS! But what an epic fail if stubble stops you in your tracks. And that keeps happening when you want to wear a sleeveless dress. You can’t possibly wear it until you are super smooth. No need to worry, Braun epilators can remove hairs as small as a grain of sand. Get that new dress on, and cause a sensation!

3. DANCING WITH YOUR ARMS IN THE AIR

You are at the most happening party and your favorite tune is being played. You want to throw your arms in the air and dance with abandon. But are you worried about your underarm skin? Smooth skin helps you take a smooth path to the smooth moves…when you have epilated skin you going to be smooth as butter.

4. PARK VISITS

Wearing your shorts to the park on an unexpected hot day at the end of the summer is one of life’s little wins. Not only are the shorts most comfy little things in the wardrobe they are super hot too. But only if your skin is silky smooth you can be thigh-high hot!

5. ROLLERCOASTER PICTURES

What’s more exhilarating than flinging your arms in the air and shouting ‘whhheeeeeee’ from the top of the largest rollercoaster. Make sure you’re picture-perfect with super smooth pits.

6. LEG DAY AT THE GYM

It’s the perfect opportunity to show off your legs to your Gym crush, but not if it’s an in-between day! Play it smooth. Braun epilators catch hairs 4x shorter than waxing, so you’ll never get caught out! Show that shining skin in glory, without a single worry.

7. ROCKING YOUR LEAVE FAVE SHORT-SLEEVED TEE.

It’s the old favorite. The trusty tee that instantly makes you feel super confident. But only if your silky smooth skin plays a supporting role, then it’s a smooth path to a small boost!

8. “LEGFIES!”

Sun? Having fun? Smooth legs? Legfie taken!

9. LAST MINUTE INVITE TO THE BEACH

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. Your crush has FINALLY asked you to the beach. But, hold on, how can you rock your cut-offs with stubble?! You need smooth skin for the win!

10. LAST MINUTE TICKET TO A GIG.

Your favorite band’s in town, and you’ve managed to get your hands on tickets. YES! Now how to look LEG-endary? Wearing your favorite mini of course! And rocking the look with super smooth legs.

7 Reasons to be Thankful to Nature | #ThankfulThursdays

by tinabasu January 20, 2017
written by tinabasu

“Nature doesn’t hurry, yet everything is accomplished” – Lao Tzu.

When nothing seems to be going right you have the open sky to look at and let your thoughts wander for some time. When you are buried deep down under stress you can stand near the window and take a deep breath of the fresh air, or take off on a weekend to somewhere green. We are humans and we tend to forget and overlook things easily. But let’s not do that and rise above the obvious.

Here’s a very apt #ThankfulThursdays prompt Week 12

2017-01-17 21.34.16

“Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” John Muir

Nature is the treasure trove. It gives you everything and you ought to be thankful for it.

Anything natural is BEST for your Skin

Do you know how many chemicals we apply to ourselves in a day? The number is staggering. According to a study by Bionsen, a natural deodorant company, an average woman puts 515 different synthetic chemicals on her body. DAILY. (source) Chemicals are present from your morning toothpaste to the lipstick that you are wearing.

515-Chemicals-Every-Day-Beauty-Products

Sticking to natural products and making DIY scrubs, face packs is best for your skin.  I am in the process of healing my skin and hair. I am experimenting with natural cleansers and natural ways to keep myself moisturized. I can tell you one thing – skin is breaking out far lesser than what it used to be!

Secrets of nature that Heal your body

I swear by Aloe Vera. This one plant can heal your body in more ways than you know. It is not just great for your skin, the juice is extremely beneficial for a good gut health. I am not telling you that Ayurveda is. It even reduces symptoms of heart reflux and stabilizes the alkaline levels of the body.

7-reasons-to-be-thankful-to-Nature

It is nature that gives you fruits and vegetables that are rich in anti-oxidants that help you fight diseases, even cancer. Similarly, can you just overlook the benefit of organic farming and organic food?

Natural Greenery is Therapeutic

Did you know what Phytoncide is? Phytoncide is a substance emitted by plants & trees are produced to help plants & trees protect themselves from harmful insects and germs. People who spend more time in greenery – in forests, parks, where there’s plenty of trees benefit from this phytoncide. In a series of studies, it was found that greenery helps in boosting immunity in humans.

shinrinyoku

There’s also a saying that watching greens keeps your eyes healthy – how far that is true I have no idea, though!

To Hell with Air Purifiers

There’s pollution, there’s smog, there’s toxic air – it’s not a new story. This has also given rise to this industry of air purifiers! Can’t we plant more trees and breathe in fresh air? I live in an apartment complex which has more than 100 huge trees. The realtor thankfully didn’t chop off all the trees that were there originally in the area. The main road near the building is dusty, filled with pollution – very difficult to breathe and not cough. But once I am inside our complex the breeze is all natural air – a completely opposite situation. Yes, trees help – they are friends.

How can you not like fresh air?

These days people spend 80% of their day in air-conditioned offices where the same air is getting circulated. No fresh air. Similar is the situation if the air conditioning in your house is on permanently. How can you not like fresh air? Open the window, stand on your balcony or terrace and enjoy the fresh air.

Plant indoor plants or have potted plants on your balcony to get fresh air, fresh oxygen.

Gardening is therapeutic

I enjoy gardening because I give life to things. It takes care of emotional health. When you see flowers blooming, or a little cherry tomato cropping up you are only filled with joy because it’s a new life and you have been a part of its production. Nature helps you heal your mind and heart as well.

gardening-quotes3-450x330

Sunbathing can create wonders

No, I am not talking about lying on the beach under the hot sun for hours altogether for that perfectly tanned look. (I will become a fried chocolate, though!) The early morning sun rays are extremely beneficial for human body. When it hits the skin it creates Vitamin D which is extremely good. My son’s pediatrician told me to do that every day for 10-20 minutes when he was born.

It’s also good for elderly people with joint pains. There’s a science behind suryanamaskar right? (I do that these days BTW)

Conclusion

Be close to nature – make a habit of it and you can only reap benefits. Nature is your best friend. Be thankful towards nature and respect natural resources – they don’t want anything in return.

Weekend Diaries | Poush Sankranti | #PatronusBuddies Weekly Link up

by tinabasu January 14, 2017
written by tinabasu

And every day the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!” And each day, its up to  you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what is important.” – Iain Thomas

Whatever you do from your heart is the closest thing for you – it can be anything. Some people like to write, some people like dance, some like to bake, some like meeting people and some like to crunch numbers and check market shares (okay let’s get it straight, no one likes to crunch numbers from heart!) But still you gotta do what you gotta do. But when you do something that you like from the heart it makes your day special.

Weekends are for leisure and weekends are for works that you do for yourself. Everyone has their weekends set but some really like to sleep in. I used to do that sometimes. But now with the tiny tot around sleep happens only when he sleeps and that’s ONLY at nights.

So what am I doing this weekend? Let’s find out.

weekend-diaries--what-i-am-doing-this-weekend

My Green Thumb

This weekend I am planning to do some gardening and bringing some life in my now-dead balcony garden. What all can happen in a month! I don’t like the sight of dead plants and dry soil, I need greens around. I find gardening therapeutic and enjoy it completely. I am also trying my hands in making organic compost – not sure how it will turn out though! I’ll do a post later on what I have finally done to the garden.

What’s on my Kindle?

I was reading this book series ‘Gaming the System’ by Brena Aubrey. It’s one of those Young Adult Romance fiction which had a very good rating on Good Reads which made me start reading the book. It isn’t something that I enjoyed quite a lot. But Then since I had started it I thought I might aswell finish the series and not leave it in the middle. So I am done with Book 1 – At Any Price and Book 2 At Any Turn. Currently I am reading the third installment which is called At Any Moment. I want to finish it up ASAP to get to other books sitting in my Kindle Library.

I did a quick check on Good Reads and now saw there are several books in the series – 7 to be precise. Now, whether I’ll read all of those or not – I have no idea yet. Let’s see how the third one fares. It’s in an interesting point at the moment though.

Happy Makar Sankranti

Today, however is also Makar Sankranti according to Hindu Calendar. It is a solar event that marks  the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path, which is the first change in the zodiac after the winter solstice. This day is also called the Uttaarayan. Source

So Happy Sankranti to you guys.

happy makar sankranti

Poush Sankranti in my Childhood

This is the beginning of the harvest season and is celebrated across India in different names. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra it’s celebrated at Pongal, In Punjab its Lohri and in Bengal we call it Poush Sankranti.

In my childhood on this day of Poush Sankranti my grandma used to make these wonderful traditional Bengali sweets – pithe, puli, patisapta, payesh. These are made with the newest rice and date palm jaggery – its called khenjuri gur –  the specialty of Bengal. It takes a great deal of time and effort to make good quality pithe puli.

This generation, however, woudn’t even know how to make any of them. In Kolkata you have the sweet shops and restaurants doing Pithe Puli Festivals.

peethe puli utsav - poush sankranti

Source

I probably won’t attempt it now with Bluey around. But I still want to keep the tradition alive and will try my hands at making patisapta which is the easier one of the lot.

Curate the Bookmark Bar

My bookmark bar is crowded with some gazillions of blog links, tutorials, sites for books, stock photos, recipes, movies, and what not. I have to clear and trash some of them so that the Bookmark Bar makes some sense now. Under each tab I have pages of links!!!! I keep bookmarking sites but I hardly visit them. I am reading little less these days. But I am hoping to get back to my blog reading spree very soon.

So what are your plans for the weekend? Let me know.

I was your friend once, I was your world once.

Your day started with me, we snuggled, we cuddled, we had fun, we were inseparable.

But today am I no body to you?

Why did you leave me here?

Am I not your friend anymore?

I come to this bench every morning, your fragrance still lingers near it.
