make foundation last longer

Are you a makeup addict who like to don a few layers before going out to work or a party – or just about anywhere else? You will never find me without a lipstick! And I know many who likes a good foundation routine before stepping out. But are you facing trouble in making the foundation last longer on your skin? Is it disappearing fast enough? Or is the foundation melting away? No one likes a melting foundation or the ones that disappear quickly.

Kinds of Foundation I use

Before I start discussing the correct process to apply to make your foundation last longer, I must tell you, you should choose your foundation correctly and wisely. Different occasions require different foundations. I like a BB cream to use for daily wear for a quick trip to the mall or a lunch. They have SPF in it and moisturizes the skin. However, my favorite foundation is the MAC Studio Fix Fluid. It stays forever, has SPF 15 and gives an amazing coverage.

While it’s important to have a good foundation – it’s also important to know how to apply it so that it looks even and flawless and doesn’t it look like a white layer!

How to make your Foundation Last Longer?

Moisturize

Moisturize your skin before you apply anything. Dry skin can collect the foundation and make your skin look patchy. Moisturize your skin even if you have oily skin – use a gel or serum.

Primer

Applying a primer will create a smooth base. A good primer will minimize pores and help the foundation stay put. Use it specially on and around your nose, on forehead, and cheeks. You need only a tiny amount of primer for the entire face. I use 3-4 dots for the entire face.

Use proper tools for blending

Blending is the key of good makeup. Foundation or eyeshadow, a well-blended makeup looks flawless. Instead of using your hands, use a beauty blender or a kabuki brush. These tools will transfer the product to your skin and create a long-lasting finish giving an even tone on your skin. Blending with hands can leave the skin looking patchy.

Set the foundation with powder

There are various makeup products these days. The foundation alone can be a powder foundation or a liquid foundation. For liquid foundation, you dust some translucent powder to make your foundation last all day long! You can also use a compact on top of the foundation. Make sure you are dabbing and dusting the compact/powder instead of wiping with the compact sponge.

Facial Mist

A facial mist can keep your makeup looking glowing throughout the day. Facial mists help to keep your skin hydrated. When choosing a facial mist, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid which is labeled as Deep Water, Heavy Water or D2O. Deep water is 10 percent heavier than normal water – so it will sink into the skin instead of evaporating.

With these 5 steps done, you can expect your foundation to stay put for 8 hours on an average. It, of course, can vary depending on weather conditions. For example, if you are out in the sun in a humid condition and you are sweating, you will need to touch up. But in general, if you are indoors, these tips will help to make your foundation last longer.

5 Organic Holi Colors you can Make at Home for Kids – Homemade Holi Colors

by tinabasu March 1, 2018
written by tinabasu

This Holi ditch the chemical colors and make Organic Holi Colors at home for kids. These Homemade Holi Colors are safe for baby’s sensitive skin.

Organic Holi Colors for babies

Holi is the festival of colors. It marks the arrival of spring, the victory of good over evil, mouthwatering sweets and snack and of course vibrant colors. These vibrant colors, however, lately has become toxic – loaded with chemicals. Colors traditionally were made from dried flowers, leaves but now they are loaded with chemicals and dyes. These harmful chemicals are not good for the adult skin – let alone use them on babies. According to Nivedita Dadu, a dermatologist “Colours these days are made from engine oil, diesel, acids, mica, glass powder and alkalis — all of which damage the skin very badly. In some case, these colors cause serious issues like eczema, redness, blisters, extreme redness and flaking of the skin. To minimize these potential side effects on the skin and hair, it’s best to take precautions.” This Holi ditch the chemical laden colors and make Organic Holi Colors at home with easy ingredients. These Homemade Holi Colors are organic and safe for baby’s sensitive skin.

Organic Holi Colors for babies

For my son’s first Holi in March 2016 (when he was eight months old) I had used one of these Homemade Holi Colors and we never had any problem with it. So I can tell you – they are absolutely safe.

How to Make Organic Holi Colors at home?

Organic Holi Colors for babies - Homemade Holi Colors

Homemade Holi Color – Yellow

Dry Yellow: The easiest of the Organic Holi colors is making a dry yellow ‘gulal’ using besan and turmeric. Besan or Bengal Gram powder is a common ingredient in Indian Kitchens. Mix 4 parts of besan flour with 2 parts of quality turmeric powder for the dry yellow powdered Holi color.
I have also made this using the turmeric powder used for Pujas.

Organic Holi Colors for babies Besan and turmeric

Liquid Yellow:

  1. Mix Turmeric powder in water
  2. Boil yellow marigold flower in water

Homemade Holi Color – Red

Red is the brightest color of all and everyone wants a red gulal on Holi. And there are several ways of making red organic Holi color.

Organic Holi Colors for babies Rose petals

Dry Red:

  1. Mix 2 parts of Red Sandalwood Powder to 2 parts of refined flour or rice flour
  2. Dry petals of red rose or red hibiscus flower under the sun for 2-3 days or till they are crisp. Powder them in a mixer. Add 1 part of refined flour to add volume.
  3. Dry slices of beetroot under the sun and make powder in a mixer. Add little flour for volume.
  4. Mix Herbal Sindoor powder with a little refined flour for volume

Liquid Red:

  1. Soak grated beetroot in water overnight. You will end up with scarlet water in the morning.
  2. Soak Kokum in water overnight. You will end up with red water in the morning.

 Homemade Holi Color – Saffron

This is the most expensive form of the Organic Holi Colors but you can always make a little batch for your little one.

saffron

Liquid Saffron:

  1. Take a pinch of saffron and soak it in a big bowl of water overnight to get saffron water in the morning.

Homemade Holi Color – Green

Green is also one of the easiest Organic Holi Colors that you can make at home.

Dry Green:

  1. Mix good herbal henna powder with refined flour
  2. Dry spinach leaves under the sun and dry grind them, Mix with flour for volume. You can do similar dry green powder with fenugreek leaves or mint leaves.
  3. Dry lots of neem leaves under the sun for 3-4 days. Dry grind them and mix with flour for volume.

neem

Liquid Green:

  1. Boil fresh neem leaves (margosa) in water. Let it cool down. Strain and dilute the green mixture with more water to get homemade Holi color in green.

 Homemade Holi Color – Pink

Making homemade Holi color in Pink is similar to red color. You need to add more flour or rice flour to make the color lighter.

Dry Pink:

  1. Mix 2 parts of Red Sandalwood Powder to 4 parts of refined flour or rice flour
  2. Dry petals of pink rose or pink hibiscus flower under the sun for 2-3 days or till they are crisp. Powder them in a mixer. Add 1 part of refined flour to add volume.
  3. Dry slices of beetroot under the sun and make powder in a mixer. Add 2 parts of flour for volume.
  4. Mix Herbal Sindoor powder with 3 parts of refined flour for volume

While the Organic Holi Colors are absolutely safe for use on baby’s skin or adult’s skin they are not as bright as the commercial colors sold in the market. The commercial colors are made from chemicals and dyes which gives the brighter hue. But the homemade Holi colors are inexpensive, safe, toxin-free and of course, made with love.

Have a bright and safe Holi. Happy Holi everyone.

happy Holi

6 Tips to Prevent Stretch Marks during Pregnancy

by tinabasu February 25, 2018
written by tinabasu

Stretch marks aren’t the end of the world. Prevent Stretch Marks during Pregnancy by following these easy tips.

prevent stretch marks during pregnancyMost women get stretch marks during the seventh to ninth month of pregnancy. While many women take the ‘tiger stripes’ in their stride some are concerned about getting them and never getting rid of them. There are ways to prevent stretch marks during and post pregnancy but what’s important is to understand it’s a long process and requires regular effort. First, let us understand what are these Stretch Marks?

What are Stretch Marks?

what are stretch marks

  • Stretch marks are tiny tears in the supporting layers of tissue under your skin. When your belly grows and skin is pulled tight to the limit during the last trimester these tears occur.
  • Stretch marks have lots to do with genetics: Chances are, if your mother got them, there’s an increased chance that you’ll also develop stretch marks.
  • Rapid pregnancy weight gain can also make you more likely to get stretch marks.

While you can’t completely avoid them, there are tried and tested tricks to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy and postpartum.

Tips to Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

tips to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy

Stay Hydrated

Water detoxifies your body and flushes toxins out of your skin. Well hydrated skin improves the elasticity of skin. Drinking around 3 litres of water during pregnancy helps to prevent stretch marks. You can also add fruits with high water content in your diet during pregnancy if you don’t find drinking plain water exciting. Eat watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers to keep yourself hydrated.

Improve Skin Elasticity

Our skin elasticity is at its best when we are young and we lose that elasticity as we age. Improving skin’s elasticity helps to prevent stretch marks. However, improving the elasticity of skin is depended as much on your food intake as on the products you use.

Vitamin E – Vitamin E works inside your skin like an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicles before they harm the skin cells. Foods like sunflower seeds, wheat germ, peanuts, almonds, are good dietary sources. Vitamin E supplements work equally good

Vitamin C – Vitamin C helps to produce collagen and elastin. Include foods like peppers, oranges or other citrus fruits to improve your Vitamin C intake.

Vitamin D – Vitamin D is vital for growth of new skin cells that hold moisture and improves skin’s elasticity. Foods like fish, cheese egg yolk are good dietary sources of Vitamin D.

Supplements – Include biotin, niacin or Vitamin E supplements in your diet

Massage with oil and firming lotions – Instead of investing in the expensive creams and oils sold as magic cure for stretch marks, invest in time to moisturize your skin. Daily moisturizing and massaging the belly will hydrate the skin keeping dryness and itchy skin at bay. Areas like your belly, lower back, thighs and legs undergo maximum stress during the third trimester of your pregnancy. Massage these areas with moisturizers which has cocoa butter or Vitamin E or shea butter or aloe vera to improve the elasticity. Moisturise the skin with generous amount of coconut oil and prevent stretch marks.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Avoid using skin products that contain sulfates. Sulfate dries out the skin and reduces skin’s elasticity over time. Use cleansers and bodywash with natural oils that hydrate your skin.

 Exercise

tips to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy

Exercise helps to improve blood circulation which results in improved skin elasticity. Exercising during pregnancy will also help to maintain a good pregnancy weight.

Watch your Weight

Many women have a misconception that during pregnancy you need to eat more and put on weight. Eating for two doesn’t mean eating twice the amount. Watch your weight, a sudden increase in weight impacts the skin and its elasticity.

Eat Right

healthy food

Skin is the largest organ in our body and the health of skin depends quite a lot on what goes inside the body than what we apply on it. A balanced meal during your pregnancy will not only help the growing baby with enough nutrients and vitamins but also improve the skin. Include foods rich in antioxidants, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and omega 3s to improve skin health and prevent stretch marks.

Top 20 Tips for Traveling with toddlers : Tried and Tested Mom Tips #SuperBloggerChallenge2018

by tinabasu February 16, 2018
written by tinabasu

Traveling with toddlers? Keep these handy tips in mind while traveling with toddlers to make your travel hassle-free.

Traveling with toddlers can become a difficult task if you have not planned ahead or if you are not equipped properly. You can never undermine your toddler’s needs while you are traveling nor you should give up on travel because you have kids.  My 2 and half year old has become a seasoned flier and he has never (thankfully) cried or thrown a tantrum in flight. He now enjoys his flight time and holidays. Here are some handy tips for traveling with toddlers that would make your travel hassle-free.

Top 20 Tips for Traveling with toddlers: Tried and Tested Mom Tips

traveling with toddlers

Pack enough Outfits

While everyone will ask you to pack light and travel light, when traveling with toddlers you might want to pack those extra outfits. You never know when your toddler’s infamous tantrum can hit you spilling food on clothes or soiling the clothes just by rolling on the ground! You can’t control that, but you can always be in control of the situation with a quick change.

Pack spare t-shirt for yourself

Keep a spare t-shirt for yourself in your cabin baggage. You never know when your toddler will be in a mood to spill that juice on you or in worse case throw up on you. You don’t want to travel in a soiled shirt yourself!

Have a Plane Bag Ready

Pack a cabin baggage for the toddler with essentials like two sets of change of clothes, baby wipes, diapers, toys and your kid’s needs.

Pack according to climate

Toddlers and kids like being snug and comfortable all the time. Pack according to climate and terrain. If you are traveling to a colder climate don’t forget to pack enough winter wear including mittens, gloves, caps, mufflers, socks.

traveling with toddlers pack according to climate

Take A Night Flight

If you are flying long distance or over 6 hours try taking the red eye fight. It’s better not to change the sleep schedules of your toddler. Let them sleep through the flight. Long flights are boring any which way and a screaming toddler on a flight will earn you many stares (and curses under breath).

Prepare Ahead Book Ahead

Your key to hassle-free travel when traveling with toddlers is to be prepared and book ahead. Book your accommodation ahead either online or over phone. You don’t want to go scouting for hotels with your toddler in tow after a long flight. Sometimes I also like booking the airport transfer ahead for a smoother exit from the airport.

Be Early Board First

Be early at the airport to get better seats. The late you reach the worse seats you get in a flight unless you have booked the seats ahead! One time when we had not booked our seats ahead and weren’t really early at the counter we were given seats in the last row! Yes, the last row in economy, where you can’t even recline your seat! Lesson learned, we now book our seats ahead!

traveling with toddler airport

Most airlines offer passengers traveling with toddlers or infants to board first and settle down first. Take advantage of that. Stow your baggage first and settle down first in the aircraft befre you have the world coming in!

Don’t vaccinate and Fly

Vaccinating your toddler right before your travel isn’t a great idea. Post vaccination toddlers can get fever or rashes – they are normal. Travel in that state isn’t comfortable. Try having a week’s time between the vaccination and your travel.

Don’t Forget your First Aid Kit and Medicines

Becoming a mom also means being expert in first aid and health care! Believe me, it’s true. Don’t just pack a first aid kit in your travel bag, keep essentials like an antiseptic, cottons, band aids, in your handbag in a first aid pouch. Yes that handbag is roomier than you think, when you are a mom. By now you are used to carrying giant totes. Always carry your kids medicines for cold, flu, fever, stomach ache, rashes – you never know when they might strike. If they are given any prescription drugs for flu carry the prescription along.

Baby Wipes are your best friend

Every mom swears by the baby wipes. They come in handy all the time. I can never even go to the grocery store without the baby wipe in my handbag!

Pack Toys

Toddlers tantrums are hard to negotiate with. Pack some of their favorite toys so that you can bribe them to stop a meltdown! We carry his Peppa Pig stuffed toy, Teddy and a few little cars to manage any tantrum that might be thrown at us at the wrong times.

toys for flight

Snacks, Snacks, snacks

Did I mention toddlers can have more mood swings than your PMS! Travelling with toddlers can become difficult when they are not in a mood to eat during your buffet timings! Room service always add up on your expenses. Pack fruits, dry snacks, biscuits, granola to keep them busy and happy when they feel hungry at odd times. You could pack some home-made wholewheat biscuits for your trip and never worry about nutrition.

Invest in Baby Carrier

Baby carriers are a great way to pacify a baby and keep them closer to you. Invest in a toddler carrier where you can carry your toddler on your back. It comes specially handy when you are not carrying a stroller and your toddler refuses to walk. With a baby carrier on you can keep your hands free. Any soft structured carrier made for toddlers would do the job.

Don’t forget the footie pajama

Toddlers love being snug specially in a flight or train. Don’t forget the overalls or footie pajamas. I have had a problem with my toddler when he refused to keep his socks on and pulled them out inside the flight at the first chance. The footie pajama saves the day in such situations.

Toddler-Friendly apps

If you allow screen-time download some toddler-friendly apps to keep them busy. Add some toddler puzzle games or shape games or save some YouTube videos for toddlers for the flight time. My son travels with his own entertainment – videos, coloring apps, puzzles, games even a pillow – that makes our air travel peaceful.

 Mosquito Repellents

Never forget the mosquito repellents if you are traveling to a tropical country or anywhere within India. When I say mosquito repellents, I do not mean the ones that your plug-in the wall! Because your toddler will run out at the beach, in the garden – so get mosquito repellents in the forms of cooling gel, lotions, fabric roll-ons, fabric patches. These will be with your toddler where ever he goes.

Chewing gums and lollipops for Air Pressure

Crying Babies in flights is a nightmare. Whenever you see someone traveling with toddler or babies in a flight you pray in your head – “God please, let this be a peaceful flight”. Well, the mom’s side knows how difficult it is to manage a kid who is crying in a flight. Most kids cry because of the change of air pressure that blocks their ear. Kids have thinner ear membranes and it hurts when the air pressure does its nasty jobs. Most kids howl and yelp during take-off and landing. This is the time, where you must keep their jaws moving. That will not allow the air pressure to affect the ears. Chewing gums or lollipops help during take-off and landing like magic. You can also give any snack to munch on.

lollipop air travel

Keep activities coming

Toddlers are little restless by nature, they refuse to stay quiet or sit at one place doing nothing. Keep them busy with activities. Carry their crayon and coloring book so that they can enjoy some activity during the flight. We carry some toddler books too. We also like playing the word game when he’s a little bored. Keep them occupied with activities to make your travel easier.

Brand you Toddler

Yeah right – brand them. If you’re travelling through busy, crowded airports or railway stations, write your mobile number and name on your child’s arm, or create a tag with the details and pin it to their shirt in case they get lost.

Don’t worry about Others – ENJOY

For every single thing that your toddler does, everything will be blamed on you. Why is he crying, why is he running, why is he throwing this and hundred more things. You can never escape questions from others. They are not in your shoes and are not dealing with the toddler So grow a thick skin – sometimes it helps – especially when traveling with toddlers. Don’t try to make others happy, don’t worry about what others are thinking – enjoy your trip.

These are some tried and tested tips for traveling with toddlers. Hope they will make your travel easier.

Traveling with a toddler is always fun #travel #toddlerlife #toddlerfashion #republicliking
