Pre and post Holi skin care tips to beat all your beauty woes this Holi

by tinabasu March 19, 2019
written by tinabasu

Don’t we all love Holi? The festival of colours, the days of bright hues everywhere. It’s one of the most beautiful festivals in India and it’s best enjoyed with loads of colours, sweets and thandai. As much as we love to say “Burra na mano, Holi hai”, we also dread the impact it has on our skin and hair. Don’t we? We tend to follow a lot of skin care tips post Holi to get back to our natural colors, but like they say, prevention is better than cure. Let’s talk about both pre and post Holi skin care tips that will keep you safe from the woes of Holi colors.

pre and post holi skin care tips

Pre Holi Skin Care Tips

#1 Oil you skin

Before going out to paint the town red on the day of Holi, apply oil all over your body, specially the exposed areas like face and arms. Light oils like almond oil or olive oil makes it easy by not being too greasy and providing nourishment for the skin.

The layer of oil will prevent colors from sticking to the skin and will make the washing part easier. You can even use baby oil.

#2 Coat your lips in petroleum jelly

Lips are sensitive and they tend to lose more moisture when you are playing with colors out in the sun for long hours. Apply a thick coat of petroleum jelly or lip balm to keep them moisturized and preventing colors to penetrate the thin skin on lips.

#3 Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

Playing Holi outside under the sun will lead to sunburn. Ensure you are using a good sunscreen lotion on your face. Do not apply around the eyes unless you want watering and burning eyes! Take out your funky sunglasses to protect the eyes.

#4 Oil your hair

Colors both dry and wet, can damage your hair making them dry and frizzy leading to breakage. On the day of Holi, oil your hair from roots and keep them in braids or bun.

#5 Wear Dark Nail paint

The nails tend to get coloured very fast during Holi. Protect your nails by painting them with dark nail paints – black, dark blue, dark purple – any dark shade works. Don’t forget to paint the back side of your nails too. Taking off colours then will be easy with the nail paint remover.

Post Holi Skin Care Tips

Post the Holi fun, the biggest challenge starts – “how to take off the color and be sober again?” Take a breath and stop panicking. It’s okay to show off at work or school how much fun you had on Holi with a little sneak peek of color on your neck! But these Holi skin care tips will help you to get the color off faster and keep the skin healthy.

#1 Use Olive oil to take off color

Olive oil is great for skin, instead of washing your fce over and over with face wash or soap, use olive oil to remove colors. Apply olive oil on a cotton ball like a makeup remover and work out over the colors on your face and neck.

#2 Use homemade face packs

Homemade face packs and scrubs will help you to scrub off colors yet nourish the skin. Make a paste with besan, turmeric and rose water and apply all over your skin. Scrub off when dry.

#3 Yogurt face mask

Yogurt has natural bleaching agents that will nourish and moisturize your skin and remove colors efficiently.

#4 Deep Conditioning Hair mask

There are tons of ways to deep condition your hair using homemade ingredients. Apply hair masks to bring the lustre back in your hair.

Aren’t these some helpful pre and post Holi skin care tips. If you follow them, you can beat the beauty woes and maintain beautiful skin right after Holi. Be safe and have fun this Holi.

Things I Wish I Knew While Choosing A Maternity Hospital

by tinabasu March 15, 2019
written by tinabasu

As moms, we often look back to the day we gave birth as one of the most significant days in our lives – the day that brought your little bundle of joy to you.

But apart from finally holding my beautiful baby, my experiences of pregnancy and delivery were really not that good.

My friend recently had a baby and we were sharing our pregnancy stories, but she said the opposite about her experience. She worried just like me, but mostly, she had enjoyed her pregnancy and felt quite calm and confident at all times.

I asked her why her experience was so much better than mine – after all, shouldn’t most deliveries be somewhat similar? She told me that it also depends on the hospital and doctors you choose, and that her good experience was all thanks to the team at Columbia Asia Hospital – Sarjapur Road, where she gave birth. She was really happy that she had chosen the right hospital for herself and her baby.

Here are some things I learnt that were different from her experience about choosing a maternity hospital:

#1 Supportive OB-GYN

My friend’s OB-GYN gave her enough time and all necessary information which helped her understand things better. So she found it much easier to take care of herself during pregnancy. It is important to find an OB-GYN who is not only qualified but also is someone you can freely speak to about your concerns. You will be seeing your OB-GYN often, so it’s good to find one who makes you feel reassured. My friend felt this level of support and comfort only when she spoke to her OB-GYN in Columbia Asia Hospital – Sarjapur Road.

#2 Care During Delivery

During my delivery, I was quite scared. Of course, it was because I didn’t know enough about what was happening. My friend, on the other hand, was also anxious, but felt much confidence when the doctor and nurses cared for and encouraged her throughout the process. The team was also taking turns to be with her and regularly monitoring and reassuring her during the delivery. This, she said, made her feel safer and more relaxed knowing that she and her baby were getting the care they needed.

#3 Qualified Teams To Handle Risks

While having a qualified Obstetrician is a given, she made sure that she had chosen a hospital where there were other specialists in house, who can help you handle any untoward complications that could arise. Pregnancy is stressful for the whole body, so it is possible that complications can arise at anytime. It therefore helps to choose a multispeciality hospital for your delivery. I suggest that you choose a hospital which is equipped with well-maintained ICUs and delivery rooms to handle emergencies.

My friend said that her OB-GYN was able to manage high-risk pregnancies, and that the team  included a lot of other specialists like anesthesiologists, emergency room doctors, ICU specialists, neonatologists, ultrasound, physicians, physiotherapists and other highly qualified specialists.

#4 Care For Your Newborn

Neonatologists and a Neonatal ICU are some must-haves at the hospital where you plan your delivery, especially if there are any suspected risks for the baby. The NICU team helps make sure that your newborn is kept safe immediately after birth and is healthy. They are available round the clock to provide immediate care in case of any health problems.

So yes, my friend had it all in one place – she was so much more confident and relaxed because she had been guided correctly in choosing the doctors and hospital to deliver their baby.

When I was pregnant and looking for a hospital, I didn’t know what to look for. Of course, I wouldn’t change anything about my pregnancy, because it brought us our little one! But, I wouldn’t mind having the chance to choose Columbia Asia, Sarjapur Road next time! So that my  journey can be less stressful.

So in case you’re on the lookout for a hospital, I’d say this one is a very good bet. At the same time, don’t go by popularity alone, make sure you do your research – talk to your friends and relatives, look up hospitals with multiple specialties and facilities, and make informed choices, so your pregnancy can be more about the memories than about the stress! I learnt this only recently myself, so I hope it helps you during your pregnancy!

Celebrate Womanhood – Happy Women’s Day

by tinabasu March 9, 2019
written by tinabasu

On this International Women’s day let’s celebrate womanhood. Let’s recognise the average woman and not just the achievers.

Today is International Women’s Day – a day where the world celebrates the achievements of women in every field. Social media is abuzz on March 8th every wishing and sharing accolades for women across the world. Celebrate womanhood, not just the medals and honors – we often forget the average women who work tirelessly every day.

Today my Twitter and Facebook timelines are filled with Happy Women’s day messages where everyone is busy writing about how women are ‘shakti’, they are wiser, they are beautiful and all that. Okay I get it, it’s a day where you make women feel good – not sure if that remains the same throughout the year. Because it is again the women who are dealing with issues like gender equality, disparity in pay, abuse and what not. How exactly are you celebrating this day? Getting gifts? Making your husband or male colleagues treat you special today? Celebrate Womanhood – being a woman is just great.

Celebrate Womanhood – What is the Average Woman doing today?

“Women Hold up Half the Sky”

There is nothing special happening today for an average woman – she is still braving the traffic and reaching her work, having a normal work day (may be with some candles or chocolates, thanks to HR dept). Moms are working on auto-pilot getting the kids ready for school, making breakfast, getting ready for work. There’s no change in an average woman’s duties.

She is juggling her family life, housework, corporate jobs like every other day. And who knows she will be the one who might have to hear “you are always leaving early” or “you are lacking the zeal” at the appraisal meeting scheduled later this month.

Women have achieved great feats in this world but being a woman is still a daily struggle to hold that fort. You have many powerful women CEOs like Indra Nooyi, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Arundhati Bhattacharya, yet you have a large number of women who are finding it difficult to come back to work life after having taken a break for a baby.

Celebrate Womanhood – let’s not judge a woman if she is a stay at home mom, or if she is taking a break after having a baby. Because she is helping raising a new generation.

womanhood mom and baby

“We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored.” —Sheryl Sandberg

Respect a Woman and her time and efforts

While the world is turning pink today and every business is trying to lure you with the ‘Women’s Day Special Offer’ there’s no change in the lives of women like your house help, the woman cab driver, the woman who sells vegetables at the market. They probably don’t even know what this International Women’s Day is!

Celebrate Womanhood – respect a woman and her and efforts that she put in making your life easier. Not just today, but regularly. I happened to ask my house help to skip turning up in the evening!

Celebrating Womanhood – Rise up by raising others

It is not just men in the society who has different names for woman. Most of the times it’s a woman who makes life of another woman difficult. Sometimes your female boss can turn the heat up or the mom-in-laws and aunties have a plethora of complaints against you. But why? Dear woman of today, learn from what you are watching around you and promise yourself you will raise your son well who will treat a girl well. Also when you become a mom-in-law yourself, treat the girl well, make a new daughter.

“A woman is like a tea bag—you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

So how has been your women’s day? Did you celebrate womanhood today?

When you learn while Having fun – PediaSure #UnboxGrowth

by tinabasu February 26, 2019
written by tinabasu

Remember the times in your childhood when you used to cut out your favorite cartoons from newspapers and comic books. I used to add them in a scrapbook. I wonder if kids these days even make scrapbooks! Maybe we had time for such fun because we didn’t have the “screen-time”. I like to engage my three-year-old in crafts and activities to reduce this screen time. So when we found this Fun and Learn pack by PediaSure we had to grab it. There’s nothing better, when you can learn while having fun.

pediasure

Did you ask, what is this Fun and Learn Box by PediaSure? – #UnboxGrowth

The three-year-old is quite a PediaSure fan and calls it ‘purple milk’ (because of the packaging). He’s quite a fussy eater so I have to ensure he is getting his nutrition and PediaSure has been helping with it. When their new launch Fun and Learn pack was up for grabs, I had to order it.

The new PediaSure pack is not just a carton box, it is an activity in itself. Once you have opened the box and transferred the PediaSure pouch in an air tight container, instead of throwing the carton box in the trash, open it up to see all the fun behind the pack.

The activity is called ‘Round The Clock’ – it is a fun DIY interactive activity for the kids. It includes activities of the daily routine that a child does around the clock – like waking up, brushing teeth, eating food, playing etc.

Where’s the fun part here?

Kids love routines and they love watching others do and learn from them. Help them cut out the circles with scissors if they are small. My son, however, loves gluing and sticking things together.

Some days back I was teaching him how to tell time and read a clock – so he’s fascinated with clocks! The sight of the clock made him very happy.

Why the mom in me is happy with PediaSure #UnboxGrowth

I am a firm advocate of learning while playing. These fun activities are great ways to keep them occupied, lessen the screen time and also teach something good.

So far we have been getting the plastic packs and carton boxes in our monthly supplies. I am trying to reduce plastic usage as much as possible. And in an environment friendly gesture, PediaSure has moved over from plastic containers to carton boxes, ensuring some less plastic getting into the landfills. Let’s applaud the brand for this gesture for a Green Earth.

How to Assemble the DIY Round the Clock

  1. Cut open the side of the box with scissors (adult help required in case of small kids)
  2. Cut the side strip and set aside – clock stand
  3. Cut out the big clock along its dotted outline Circle B
  4. Cut along dotted line on Circle A
  5. Cut out the arrow
  6. Place the arrow over Circle A, and Circle A over Circle B so that all the X’s are aligned
  7. Cut out the small circle of activities
  8. Stick the activity rings on the small circles on clock according to your time table.
  9. Pin the clock on the stand you kept aside at step 2
  10. Have fun with Round the Clock

The ultimate in flight travel checklist that you should not miss

by tinabasu February 21, 2019
written by tinabasu

The ultimate in flight travel checklist includes everything that you must pack in your carry-on while boarding a flight.

Do you have a travel check list that you take out while you are packing for a trip? I in fact have an excel sheet that I refer to and color block as I am packing! Okay, don’t laugh, better to be well prepared than forget important things. When you become a mom that check list becomes endless! You never know what your child will need and they tend to ask for the wrong things at wrong times! Anyways, this post is not about travelling with kids, this one is for all the solo travellers, work travellers, backpackers, or even millennials. This ultimate in-flight travel checklist will ensure you have a smooth air travel and you are not bored to death on those never-ending kind of flights!

The Ultimate In flight travel checklist

the ultimate in flight travel checklist

#1 Smart Device

If you are travelling in domestic airlines (specially within India) you have zero inflight entertainment other than boring in-flight magazines and maybe newspapers. So be smart and carry your own smart device – smart phone, tablet, iPad, iPod, Kindle or anything that will keep you entertained. Load up movies on your smart device that you can watch while you are up in the air.

girl reading kindle

#2 Headphones

Please be a good neighbour to the person sitting next to you and carry your headphone. You don’t want to wake up another person while playing PUBG or watching a movie! Wireless headphones or ear buds work best because you don’t have to deal with those annoying wires that get some personal kick by getting tangled in the messiest way!

You might want to Read: 8 Must Have Travel Gadgets for Travellers

#3 Portable Charger

What would I do if the power banks were not invented! All smart phone or tablet users know it by now how dependant we are on the power banks! No one wants their device to run low on battery while you are watching something interesting in an otherwise boring flight, let alone die down completely. This should be pretty high up on your in flight travel check list.

#4 Book

If you are the kind that prefers the smell of ink and papers then Kindle is not for you. Flights are actually perfect places to start and finish a book. I remember reading up the entire book The Da Vinci Code on a flight (I wasn’t a mom then).

#5 Body Lotion and Chap stick

Once you are up in the sky the skin tends to get dry and flaky. The cabin air is in fact dry and not humid and that affects the skin. Carry a tiny bottle of body lotion for the times your hands feel dry. I never forget to carry my lip balm or chap stick in a flight because the lips tend to get dry too. Also don’t forget to hydrate yourself while flying.

chapstick

#6 Appropriate Clothing

Airplanes can be chilly inside. Don’t forget to carry a warm clothing. And if you are visiting a tropical country from a colder climate, ensure your carry-on has light clothing appropriate for the weather at your destination.

#7 Don't pack a jacket

Going to a place with colder climate? Don’t pack the jacket in your carry-on luggage, instead carry them in your hand to avoid wasting massive space in your hand luggage. Most airines, don’t include a jacket as a baggage! Yeah thank me later.

#8 Travel Wallet

Having all your essentials – travel documents, passport, currencies, insurance papers, itineraries in a travel wallet saves space and worries. Whatever you can’t carry digitally carry them in a travel wallet. It’s also wise to carry printed travel direction to your first stop incase you face trouble with phone’s data when you land in a new country.

#9 Hand Sanitizer

Its’s always better to be safe, isn’t it? Each and everything inside an airplane has been touched by numerous people. Don’t forget to sanitize your hands before you eat that snack!

#10 A Spare T-shirt (specially if you are a mom)

If you are a mom to an infant or a toddler pack a spare change of clothes even if it’s an half an hour flight! You never know when you baby might throw up!

You might want to read: 20 Tips for Travelling with a toddlers. Tried and tested Mom Tips.

Now isn’t this an ultimate in flight travel checklist? This will certainly help you a smooth flight without trouble or getting bored.
