6 Zero Waste Kitchen Essentials you can get for a sustainable living

by tinabasu July 31, 2019
written by tinabasu

If you care for the environment you must reduce your trash. Period. We are creating way more trash than the earlier generation and its affecting the earth. You know it too. The only way to deal with it is to start at your home – REDUCE WASTE. Create a Zero Waste system in your own house and maintain a sustainable living. Start with the zero waste kitchen essentials that will ensure you are generating much lesser trash. One trip to your grocery store can make a big addition to the plastic waste being dumped in landfills and oceans. Here are some zero waste kitchen essentials which are one time investments and you can use them again and again – REDUCING YOUR TRASH.

6 Zero Waste Kitchen Essentials

zero waste kitchen essentials pinterest

All the products I am mentioning are easily available at local markets or on e-commerce sites like Amazon. You can visit my Storefront to see more sustainable products that will help in reducing trash. I follow zero waste in my kitchen religiously. There’s a very less amount of trash that goes out from my house (mostly dry waste). I will update you about composting techniques that will not require any effort or investment.

#1 Switch to Cloth Shopping Bag

Try buying your vegetables and fruits from a farmer’s market than a supermarket. Even if you are shopping from a super market, carry your own shopping bag. Bangalore, as a city has banned plastic bags (thankfully). At first we thought it was insane paying a hefty price for buying cloth bags every time we shop. But then I found, that is the best thing to happen – carry a bag to the market and you can use that cloth bag over and over again. Imagine the kind of plastic waste you are reducing. One of the best zero waste kitchen essentials is to get one of these cloth shopping bag with compartments. They are easy to sort and organize the vegetables.

#2 Get a compost starter kit

We often complain our house plants dying easily. We don’t realise they need food and nutrition to grow and thrive. And we are throwing away easy plant food EVERY SINGLE DAY. Get a compost starter kit and start composting the raw uncooked vegetables and fruits peel instead of throwing them out. Don’t add cooked food or things like meat bones. Once compost is ready mix it with the soil in your planters and you will see your garden blooming in abundance.

#3 Stainless Steel or Glass Food Storage Solutions

Storing food items in plastic containers isn’t the healthiest practice. Switch to stainless steel or glass jars for storing grains and spices. Use glass containers to store food in the refrigerator. Some Indian families store their grains and spices in stainless steel containers and that is totally great because you can use these containers for years – they are sturdy and easy to clean. Imagine the amount of plastic you can reduce from the face of earth.

#4 Carry a Pocket Shopping Bag in your handbag

One of the popular complaints about not carrying your shopping bag is – this was an unplanned visit to the store. Keep the foldable pocket shopping bags in your handbag for such emergencies and unplanned shopping sprees. In Bangalore, we don’t get shopping bags for buying clothes too. We pay Rs. 15 – Rs 20 for the paper bags at the store. Save those money (and some trees) every time you shop. Stash one or two pocket shopping bags in your handbag!

#5 Stainless Steel water bottle and lunch box

Some other good zero waste kitchen essentials include reusable and sustainable food and drink containers. Instead of buying the single use plastic water bottles or Styrofoam coffee cups make a switch to a more sustainable and long use one like this stainless steel insulated bottle.  It can keep your beverage warm or cold as you prefer.

zero kitchen waste essentials - steel bottle

Instead of getting yet another single use cup at the coffee shop carry a coffee mug and ask the server to fill that instead. These kind of insulated coffee travel mugs are leak proof, heat proof and can keep your beverage hot for 4-5 hours.

If you pack lunch from home – invest in a good stainless steel lunch box. They are durable, long lasting and keeps your food warm. These days you get stainless steel and glass tiffin boxes that go in microwave for heating too! So if you like heating food at work no need to worry.

#6 Stainless Steel Straw

Single use straws are an environmental hazard and its widely known now. There are a gazillion videos of marine life being affected with these straws when dumped in the ocean. The best way to completely eradicate these plastic straws is to get yourself accustomed to drinking without a straw. In case you can’t live without straw – invest in a stainless steel straw.

I found some real fancy metal straws that come in these cute rainbow shades. Carry them along with you, in a café, to your work and everywhere you think you might use a straw. This is one of the most absolute zero waste kitchen essentials you need to generate less trash and for a sustainable living.

I try to minimize my wastes as much as possible. Getting bio degradable trash bags to making my own compost, I am trying to reduce my carbon foot print. I have curated a bigger list on my Amazon Storefront of zero waste kitchen essentials that you can check out and get more ideas.

The lesser you depend on plastic, the better your contribution is towards the environment. If you like this post, let me know what are you doing to reduce your carbon foot print, how are you progressing towards a sustainable living?

Will Your Picky Eater Grow Right? Every Mom’s Worry – Answered.

by tinabasu July 16, 2019
written by tinabasu

Will your picky eater grow right? This everyday question has an answer – follow these tips to make your picky eater eat and help them grow right.

Do you face a standoff over vegetables and fruits every day at the dinner table? You are not the only one. If you are worried about your kid’s fussy eating, complete and balanced nutrition, thinking whether he will grow right or have proper bone growth – this post is just for you.

Toddlers, preschoolers can be notoriously picky. My soon-to-be-four-year-old will eat toast with butter, parathas with egg, but will make faces if its rice. He absolutely loathes anything mushy like pasta, fish or khichdi! Food must never ever touch each other or his fingers! He says my hand is dirty! Food time is a struggle, but I have learnt how to make it bearable!

Is fussy eating forever? Will he ever Grow Right?

I keep asking his doctor, is he EVER going to eat properly? According to her, he’s healthy and fine. He’s super active and calls himself a Hulk! But picky eating can be detrimental for growth, development and health.

What are the necessities for proper physical growth and brain development?

If you are a mom of a fussy eater, I’m sure you read up a lot about child nutrition and hacks. But mommy, don’t get too much  stressed. Fussy eating is a phase and it improves once they start school and learn to eat along with peers.

I had decided on working on all the pain areas to improve his overall health and eating habits and help him grow right.

How I deal with my picky-eater?

Your picky-eater probably is smarter than you, but you need to also keep in mind who’s the mom! When my son was 2, food time was stressful for me. I tried everything – offering three kinds of food every meal, reducing milk, keeping him hungry and hiding all the snacks! But the toddler was adamant – “I don’t want to eat”! But I wanted him to grow right.

But I decided – I have to outsmart this tiny human. I started engaging him in the kitchen with shelling peas, peeling boiled eggs (of course I made them cold) or even making milk shakes and smoothies. All of these were done to create an interest around food and meal time.

Introduce family food – no special food – EAT Right

I started giving our family food to my toddler which is complete and balanced nutrition in itself. When you are a role-model in front of your kid they tend to watch and learn. We also included several kinds of food in our daily menu. That’s how he started liking soups. It’s the perfect excuse to feed him vegetables. Believe me, I have fed him vegetables like sweet potato, gourd, pumpkin, broccoli, carrots – all through various soups. And he enjoys soups and also watching the hand blender in use! He has also started liking eggs because he participates in peeling them.

Outdoor Play and exercise – PLAY Right

He’s a kid with lot of energy and I need ways to channel that. I enrolled him in a toddler swimming class in our apartment. He has a serious fascination for water so he enjoyed his swimming. Outdoor sports are not only great for physical growth and wellbeing – they develop a good appetite in kids too. Outdoor sports like running, swimming, football are all good ways to improve bone growth.

Provide something that boosts immunity and growth – Grow Right

While he was fussing over his food and I was losing my sleep, the doctor had recommended giving a health drink like PediaSure to make up for the lost nutrition and consequent growth. I was a little sceptical because he wasn’t very fond of milk. I got the PediaSure Cookies and Cream flavour for him and he liked it. PediaSure is enriched with 37 nutrients which provides 100% RDA of macro and micro nutrients when given in appropriate quantities. So whatever your child might be missing out because of poor eating habits, there are more chances of getting it back. PediaSure also contains prebiotics and probiotics that boost  immunity and keeps the gut healthy. I have given him PediaSure in milkshakes, smoothies, added it to cookies, and even pancakes.

Here’s why Pediasure is highly recommended.

My son’s picky eating habits are improving ever since he’s joined school and is eating along with friends. I get surprised when he says “I ate idli in school”! Fussy eating is a phase and often your behaviour and response to it helps to overcome it. If you follow any of these steps for complete and balanced  nutrition, outdoor plays for bone growth and physical development, let me know in a comment below. If you have other tips and hacks for fussy eaters let me know too.

7 Tips to manage common cough and cold in kids during weather changes

by tinabasu July 8, 2019
written by tinabasu

Weather changes related common cough and cold in kids is inevitable. Months of June, July are particularly notorious for a surge in common cough and cold in kids – specially the school going kids. Blame the monsoon and frequent changes in temperature for this. Bangalore is a dry place with a unique weather. You can have extreme heat and rain and cold all in a day! The worst affected in these weather changes are the kids. Let me share 6 tips that I follow to manage common cough and cold in kids.

tips-to-manage-common-cough-and-cold-in-kids

When are your kids most likely to catch the common cough and cold?

If you are experiencing extreme weather changes – hot and humid one day followed by heavy rains and cooler temperatures, you must take precaution. Common cough and cold in kids during weather changes is always on the rise. Both cough and cold are air borne or contact borne diseases and spreads easily. If your child is going to school, playschool, day care they are more likely to catch this.

I am sharing with you few tips that I follow for my almost-4-year-old-son. He’s vaccinated for influenza and all other major vaccines, but common cough and cold are inevitable.

Disclaimer: This post is not suggesting you should skip vaccines and only stick to home remedies. Vaccines are very important.

7 Tips to manage common cough and cold in kids during weather changes

Let them Rest

Rest and good sleep cannot be exchanged with anything else. When we adults get cold we feel lethargic all the time, it’s similar for kids too. Sleep helps the body to fight the infection. Let your child sleep a little more, or let him play indoors where they are not running around much. It’s the perfect time to get all crafty – involve them in art and craft or have some story sessions.

Hydrate

Dehydration is pretty common during cough and cold. Kids tend to use the loo less so make sure you are keeping them well hydrated. My son often refuses to drink water, specialy when he has cold. While giving frequent sips of warm water is good – you can also try various soups with vegetables, clear soups or even juices high in Vitamin C to keep them well hydrated.

Steam Inhalation

One of the best ways to open blocked nose is steam. Steam thins out the mucous and opens blocked nose. But giving steam to kids can be a challenging task for parents. Here’s what you can try

  1. Run hot water in the shower in a closed bathroom. Stand with your kid near it so that they can inhale the steam
  2. Use a facial steamer near the kid in the bathroom.
  3. Get a humidifier or a cool-mist vaporiser and place it near the bed when your child is sleeping or resting

Saline Drops or Saline sprays

Another good way to clear blocked nose is through saline drops or sprays. You can get sterile saline nose drops at a chemist store and add 1-2 drops in each nostril. You need to keep the head still at one position after adding the drops. This might get difficult with some kids (like mine) so I use the saline nasal spray.

Elevated sleeping

When the nose is blocked it is very difficult to get good sleep. Use pillows to elevate your child’s head position while sleeping.

Dry Ginger Powder & Honey

Dry ginger powder (sonth) is beneficial for cold and runny nose. It’s easily available in the market and you will find them in the spice or powdered spice section in the super market. Take a pinch of dry ginger powder and add a little honey to it. Ask your child to lick on it or keep it on their tongue. This will give them relief from cold.

Tulsi, Ginger and Honey

You must have had this when you were a kid. Wash a few tulsi (basil) leaves, put them in a mortar and pestle and extract its juice. Add some ginger juice and honey to it and give it to your child for relief from cough.

I hope you will find these tips to manage common cough and cold in kids during weather changes helpful. After all, a mom only wants her baby to be fine and comfortable and she goes at lengths to give that comfort. If you have any more tips for common cough and cold during weather changes that you practice, please let me know in a comment below.

Why you shouldn’t ignore bleeding during pregnancy?

by tinabasu April 26, 2019
written by tinabasu

Bleeding during pregnancy is not an uncommon phenomenon. It might be due to normal causes, but on the other hand, it could be dangerous too. So, it is always advisable to contact your doctor in case you notice any bleeding from your vagina. Visiting a gynecologist in Bangalore will help you understand whether your bleeding is a serious issue or not.

When is bleeding normal in pregnancy?

Vaginal bleeding can occur at any stage of the pregnancy but in general, light bleeding usually occurs during the first trimester. This event is known as spotting. But even in the case of spotting, you should get a check-up from your gynaecologist.

Some of the reasons for normal bleeding are –

  • In the initial weeks, when the fertilized egg gets attached to the uterine wall, light spotting is noticed. Sometimes, you might also confuse this with a light period if you are not aware that you are pregnant.
  • Having sex during pregnancy can also lead to mild bleeding which may or may not be dangerous.
  • Hormonal imbalances or some sort of infection can also cause bleeding.
  • Changes occurring in the cervix in response to your pregnancy leads to softening of the tissues. As a result, in some cases a cervical polyp forms in women which leads to occasional bleeding.

What are the negative implications of bleeding during pregnancy?

Bleeding is considered to have negative implications when the underlying causes include the following.

Miscarriage

The first 12 weeks are very important because miscarriage tends to happen in this phase. So, even though you notice spotting, you must straight away report to your doctor to make sure it is not a miscarriage. Some of the most common signs of miscarriage include back pain and abdominal pain. However, there stays a very minute chance in which an ongoing miscarriage can be prevented if reported in time.

Molar Pregnancy

In short, a molar pregnancy is a condition in which the uterus witnesses an abnormal tissue growth. This condition is also known by the name of gestational trophoblastic disease. In the complete mole condition, there will be no fetus and only the abnormal tissues. In a partial mole, the fetus is usually present but has several birth defects. If a woman has a molar pregnancy, there is no chance of normal delivery and the fetus may even be completely consumed by the abnormal tissue growth.

Subchorionic haemorrhage

The space between the wall of the uterus and the gestational sac gets filled with blood and sometimes lead to the formation of blood clots. These clots get released in the form of old dark blood.

Ectopic Pregnancy

If the fertilized egg does not get implanted where it should and instead gets implanted outside the uterus, the condition is called ectopic pregnancy. When this implantation occurs in the Fallopian tubes, the tubes might rupture leading to blood release from the vagina.

bleeding during pregnancy can be due to ectopic pregnancy

So, this is why you should not ignore bleeding during your pregnancy. What may seem as normal to you, might not be so and only a doctor can tell the difference. So, visit a gynecologist in Bangalore at your earliest when you notice vaginal bleeding during pregnancy.

bets foods to feed your child

Feeding a baby can be a struggle for every mom. Some kids eat when they are in mood and some just turn out a fussy eater right from the start. When you are introducing solid food at six months of age you still have many restrictions on what foods you can and you can’t give to your baby. Baby’s taste buds start developing at one year age mark and sometimes it is best to introduce foods according to your diet or family before your baby is turning one – typically between 8 and 12 months. Let’s discuss the 5 best foods to feed your baby before he turns one. The faster you introduce these foods the better are the chances they’ll adapt to these tastes.

When and how to introduce solid food to your baby?

According to WHO, a baby should be exclusively breastfed till he /she is six months old. You don’t even need water. After six months introduce liquids like boiled rice water, boiled lentil water, boiled apple juice gradually – few spoons each day. When the baby has taken it well start with rice cereal puree, vegetable puree, pureed fruits. But the rule of thumb is to introduce one new food in every three days and build gradually.

By end of 8 or 9 months you can introduce almost everything that you eat – vegetables, chicken, turkey, fish and even eggs. Variety always helps when it comes to food for infants and toddlers.

Lentils are best plant based proteins that you can give your child. They are packed with iron and are easily digestible. Start with boiled lentil water at 6months and gradually give lentils cooked with vegetables.

Chicken, turkey, fish, eggs are all safe for babies when they are cooked well. and mashed. They are very good sources of protein. I started giving fish along with rice since my son was 7 months old.

My son’s doctor had hold me, for first one month blend his food in a food processor or blender – specially things like vegetable purees. Later on he suggested to pressure cook it and break it down with a masher so that he is introduced to new textures. Else babies tend to like the smooth texture for longer period of time.
