55 FictionFiction & Writing

55 Fiction Friday – SHE

by Tina Basu January 17, 2014
written by Tina Basu
I had almost forgotten that I used to write these little 55 Fictions every Friday. Now that I am back to my space I have started writing them again. Now I read a comment where a reader had commented if I can have some other kind of ending for the little fictions that I do. So I tried something like that today. Now I hope I continue with my 55 Fiction series. Go Ahead check it out.

She peeped out from her comfortable warm cozy blanket…

She looked all around for him…

She saw him opening the door…

She rolled her eyes and gave him that sexy look…

She ran towards him and jumped on him…

He caressed her…

“Come on my little Snowy your food is here… Good girl, good Kitty”

written by Tina Basu
Rahul from Desire V/s Destiny has this cool section of blogger interviews where he interviews various bloggers from various fields on his blog.
Now this is going to sound really funny, Rahul had contacted me long time back for this interview that he wanted to do and I had replied then. After that I had completely forgotten about it. And I have no idea why I forgot it.
Today I was surfing on the net and was reading some posts from his blog when I came across my interview post! And it’s like some two years and I had no idea about it!!!! I am so weird at times.
Anyways you can read about the interview here which is dated Oct 2012. And thanks Rahul for the post.

The Jan Plan

by Tina Basu January 13, 2014
written by Tina Basu
Taking a bus to home and don’t know what to do. So thought of posting something. I am going to do a small post on what I am planning for this month. Some contributions to the environment, and some other blogging plans. So read on.

I am going green these days. I am so frustrated with the Bangalore traffic that I am trying to contribute in my little way in reducing it. I have decided to take public transportation to work every day. Last few months while I was driving I realized I was losing my peace of mind and wasting the time sitting at a traffic signal. I could only hear lots of advertising and very little music on radio, and the same play list of my music CD. You see from Electronic City to Old Airport Road is quite a distance and spending 90 mins (or some times more) doing nothing and only fretting about traffic was not working out for me.

But I love to drive and those of you know the Bangalore Elevated Highway between Electronic city and Silk board would agree with me there isn’t a better place to drive in Bangalore. So I am taking my car out once or twice a week max and rest of the time I am taking a Volvo. I got a monthly pass and am finding it really convenient. Not because of the bus but at least I get to do a lot of things while I am traveling, I read books, news, do loads of FB and Twitter and occasionally blog too from the phone like I am doing now. Isn’t that a good idea?

Well coming to my other blogging plans – I have been considering to do other kind of reviews as well apart from book reviews. Actually on different kind of products and even services. Now I don’t want to clutter this blog with all those reviews. I am a user my self of so many products and I myself look for reviews before buying something so why not my own review blog. I have already taken up the URL and am planning to post there soon. So guys wish me luck.

In case you don’t know I have a cook blog as well, http://twinklingtinacooks.blogspot.in/ so all food and restaurant related reviews will go there, all books, movies, plays etc will be posted here and all products and services related reviews will go in the new blog. What say?

Leave a comment below if you want me to write on something else. Well I’m gonna end this post there. I need to get down – thank God I need to I’m freezing inside.

P. S. there can be some errors spellings and words coz there are lots of prediction and auto correct happening here and I am not re-reading before posting. Will correct them later and also add my digital signature later. So bye for now.

Book Review – The Guardian Angels by Rohit Gore

by Tina Basu January 13, 2014
written by Tina Basu
All my reviews in recent times has been about serious books but the upcoming two reviews are going to be different. There’s a love story and the crime thriller coming up in the blog.. so stay tuned all of you. The latest love story I read was “The Guardian Angels” by Indian Author Rohit Gore.

Now when you think about love stories you get some ideas in mind on how the story can be. Track 1 – Girl meets boy, fall in love, wants to get married but the girl’s family plays a villain. Track 2 – Boy meets girl, boy falls in love but girl is not approving (for whatever reason) and the boy does daredevil stuffs to win the girl’s love and love happily ever after!!! These tracks come in my mind all thanks to the Bollywood flicks of the 90s! But behold readers “The Guardian Angels” is nothing like that. Let’s find out how the story unfolds.

The Story

Aditya the rich kid in the school is often roughed up by the tough guys – The TrippleHeads. He is saved one day from this bullying by the charming and witty Radha with her presence of mind, and gradually Radha & Aditya become friends. Later, there are incidents when we find these two protecting each other from any vice coming their way. They develop an unknown liking and are together without telling each other.

Both come from opposite backgrounds but still are at absolute peace. Aditya is the son of the rich business tycoon, staying at the plush multistoried property meant for only four people in a posh locality of Mumbai, where as Radha is the simple daughter of a Trade Union leader. He aspires to become a cricketer but then he follows the footsteps of his dad, and she wants to become a social activist and will stand much against the money minting business minded people like Aditya’s family. Their pair looks odd, but they try to stick against odds. If there is something called destiny it’s explained perfectly here.

My Thoughts

There are few things I absolutely liked, the narration, the characters and the simplicity. The author has not mentioned in the story that Aditya & Radha are a couple or are dating but as you keep reading you understand the feeling and get the depth of their feelings. It’s the perfect title for this novel I feel.

As you start reading and go through Aditya’s formative years you get a very uncanny resemblance with our Cricket God, very very close resemblance I must say, though Aditya is supposed to be developing into the next big prodigy after Tendulkar. Again, the industrialist family, their palatial multistoried home is just the Antillia story. Don’t know the rationale behind these, but it’s ok.

I particularly liked the parts where you have the characters talking about their day to day lives and the transformations.

The Author

When he had written to me asking to review this book, he had mentioned a line “I can assure you that THE GUARDIAN ANGELS won’t disappoint you.” and I am so glad that he stuck to it. It really didn’t disappoint me.

He is a novelist based in Pune and this is his fourth novel after Circle of Three, Focus Sam and A Darker Dawn. I haven’t read them but I am looking forward to reading them in near future. He is also a management consultant with an IT major. You can read more about him at his site http://www.rohitgore.com/.
My Ratings – 4/5. It’s quite a good read, I won’t be surprised if I start reading it again after few months!

Good Reads Reading Challenge 2013 – I was terrible

by Tina Basu January 9, 2014
written by Tina Basu
This isn’t a great news for a book lover like me, but it’s true. I failed miserable in the Good Reads Reading Challenge 2013. 21 books out of 52 is just terrible. Yeah there are many things that I can defend with – the target I set was too high and not getting time and so on… but then that’s not what I wanna do. But take a look what I am planning.

Pathetic Result

I had thought I am keeping a safe target of 1 book a week, but then maybe that’s not what I should do… sometimes I get my hands on these huge serious books which takes time. And then I need to reduce driving to work. Last two months I drove everyday and hardly got any time to read. I should get back to my bus trips, I get to read quite a lot – thanks to the Bangalore traffic.. [I was just about to use a hash tag!! I keep tweeting about the traffic all the time… people near me are all tired of it I guess by now.. haha]
Ok so now this yea I am entering the Good Reads Reading Challenge 2014 with a little safer target of 30 books. I hope I can make it. Though haven’t finished one this year…
Keeping it Safe this time

Are you also a part of any reading Challenge??
Let me know if there is any interesting fiction reading challenge that I might like, and I’ll give a try there as well…

Book Review – Sale of Souls by Vidyadhara

by Tina Basu January 6, 2014
written by Tina Basu
Hello people, Happy New Year everyone. I am back in my space after soooooo long, I almost forgot I used to write here!! I have so many book reviews to update, all this work and travel has been making me lazy and pushing me at my wits end… But now I’m back to the pavilion and rearing to go.

So first things first, over the last two months there are many books that I have read and have watched some really bad movies, so I’m thinking I’ll skip reviewing those movies and concentrate on the great books. There are some more plans as well; I’ll let you know about it when I finally come up with it.

So I got this book Sale of the Souls some time back (actually long time back) from the author. It looked simple from the cover design but as the saying goes – it’s better to read than just go by the cover. It’s rather on a serious note of land acquisition and love amidst that. So let’s see how the book was.

The Story

In a remote coastal village of Canara the life is quiet & slow, villagers lead their lives in spite of the government apathy for any infrastructure. Only few dare to cross the village and take up higher education in the nearby town. Samar, our protagonist, is one of them who is the first person to do a PHD from this village and is happy being a professor in a college in the town. Roshni the young daughter of the village head is fresh out of law-college and is eager to spread her wings.

In the trying times the villagers face with the mean government body which is waiting to grab their fertile land for developmental projects. It not only poses a threat to the villagers and their livelihoods but also the bio-diversity of the region. In these difficult times Roshni tries to make her voice heard by getting people together and opposing the political big wigs where as Samar tries to look for a peaceful solution and both with their opposites finds themselves in love.

My Thoughts
I am really surprised by the way the narration is kept simple yet endearing. I have been reading some serious heavy books recently which have such deep under linings. We read about land acquisitions and all the protests, rallies and ‘morchas’ against them in the papers, but probably never think about how the people who are entangled in that feel or think. In literal sense we see ‘sale of souls’. It’s quite awakening, and I hope we start thinking about it seriously. I like how the characters have been developed and the little nuances that are detailed.

About the Author

Vidyadhar Durgekar as I read over the internet is a multi faceted man. He has worked for the armed forces, in the corporate world in India & abroad and now is an author. This is his debut novel and I think he has done a great work. He blogs at  http://www.vidyadharas.blogspot.in, and you can read more about him there.

My Rating – 3.75/5. It’s a good serious read.
