Book Review: 60 Minutes by Upendra Namburi

by Tina Basu September 8, 2014
written by Tina Basu

I told you I was going to be busy over the weekends reading books. I just finished this corporate drama called 60 Minutes by best-selling author Upendra Namburi. Now isn’t the title itself intriguing?? That itself got me excited for this book. I like fast books. Anyways let’s see how this one was.

The Story

As I told you it’s a corporate drama and the story line starts at Mumbai at one of the biggest FMCG office BCL. (No guesses for which one it is really). So there is this new and important product launch for their latest detergent. The Chief Marketing Officer Agastya is all geared up for it and co-ordinating between their Global head and the head honchos. Just before the press conference he finds out their arch rival and competition Stark is launching a similar product the very next day at a lower price.

All hell breaks loose on the sales and marketing team at BCL. To add to it, Agastya has Maithili, his flame, demanding for merely some 15 crores, failing which she would expose about their affair and escapades (read sexcapades) to his wife Nandita. Now Agastya has 60 minutes to save both his marriage and his high profile job. Maithili, stung with betrayal seeks revenge and wants to turn Agastya’s world upside down both financially and emotionally. She has 60 minutes in hands for it. What will Agastya do? Will he succumb to the crisis or come out? What does one do when your job, assets, marriage are at stake?

My Thoughts

This book is a roller coaster ride. From the pressures of product launch and crisis management at crucial moment to an illicit affair and a breaking marriage, it offers quite a gamut of emotions and rush. Being in an FMCG sales and marketing division myself I totally could resonate with the rush of a product launch and the trouble that a competition product can pose on the day of a product launch. I thought it was a little too detailed though.

Everything is fair in love and war and these days it’s not always ethics or morals that matter. Now coming to the title 60 Minutes I thought the entire story line would be within a span of 60 minutes, but it’s not quite that. It goes into flash back often without any order that too. Maithili is the woman with the enigma. I quite liked how she meets Agastya at Geoffrey’s and how they go in for a crazy drive in their cars. I somehow quite liked Maithili!!!

Now if you are quite aware of the FMCG situation in India then you would know this is a typical case of HUL & P&G fighting it out in the middle with below the belt punches. It’s nice how you weave a story around it. Well, some places I thought it got dragged but otherwise it a nice breezy read.

About the Author

As you would have guessed already Upendra Namburi is an ex corporate guy who has now taken up the pen. His debut novel 31 was a bestseller. He has done a good job to weave a story around the mean corporate world. You can read more about him here.

My Rating – 3 out of 5. It a nice weekend read.

100 Word Story – The warmth of love

by Tina Basu September 7, 2014
written by Tina Basu

In mood for some romantic fiction today.

***

The weekend trek was turning out to be a nightmare for Sean. They had lost track and it was getting darker by the minute.

Mia still dizzy from her earlier slip in the river was shivering… Sean without any thought had jumped in the cold water to save her.

He managed to put up a fire… it will keep them warm. Sean looked at Mia… her face glowing in the soft light… she looked even prettier… how he wished she knew how much he loved her.

“Come sit close to me”

He got closer…

“Thanks”, she said with a kiss.

Where is the date tonight?

by Tina Basu September 5, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Isn’t it nice sometimes to let loose things and write just a fun post??? Of course it is. Today I am in no mood to write any heavy/thoughtful/emotional fiction. I just decided to do a fun conversation post. I am also linking this to the ABC Wednesday for this week.

Where is the date tonight?

‘R we going 2 #TheLeelaPalace or #Sheraton or #SomeRandomEatingJoint for da #DateNight ?’

‘Hav not decided, will tell you later’

‘You gotta tell me in advance #ITakeTimeToGetReady…’

‘Will tell you by evening’

‘Evening??? #TooLate I need to decide what I’ll wear.. it’s a #GirlThing.. understand..’

‘Wear wt ever u want, how does it matter where we are going?’

‘Hello… will I wear a #Zara in #SomeRandomEatingJoint or just wear a denim at #TheLeelaPalace??? Duh..’

Will you for once please stop using hashtag for every single word!!!

‘No… #ILoveHashTags’

Akaash was in no mood to reply to her tweets, he turned off the wifi in the phone and returned to the book he was reading.

***

So my word for this week is Hashtag. Now I do not need to explain it, it’s quite the celebrity itself. Isn’t it sometimes really irritating to see a hashtag in almost every sentence, with every word. I have come across people tweeting with Hashtags which runs in the length of a sentence, almost. I also don’t understand why they use hashtags with equal enthusiasm in FB. one question for them – Are you a trendsetter???

September Reading Updates

by Tina Basu September 5, 2014
written by Tina Basu
Hello people, here with my reading update again. Some books that I want to finish this month. It’s quite a long list and I hope I can finish all of them off this month. All weekends this month I am going to read and not going for any more shopping trips. Well, that is a big statement let’s see how long I can resist.

Ok right now I am reading this new thriller called 60 Minutes by Upendra Namburi. The entire story line is spread over a span of 60 minutes!!! Isn’t that great. It has been a good start though I have not been able to read quite of it. I have been getting back home after 8 or 9 in the night this entire week. Thankfully weekend is coming by and I will finish it off by the weekend and post a review. This one has this character who’s the chief marketing officer in FMCG and has a product launch and all… it’s all my kind of thing and thus I like it already!

My next read will be Catching the Departed by Kulpreet Yadav. I had started with this one when 60 Minutes arived. now that I have to post a review for that within 7 days I have paused it now and switched over to 60 Minutes.

Then is The Last Man. This also is on pause. I hate doing these to good thrillers. But when you get a book for review you need to give that a little priority and your own books come only after them. But I hope to finish that off as well ASAP.

All of these are thrillers. I want to read this romance one Honeymoon Blues, by Lily Zanye, for a long time and still have not been able to start off with it. I want to start off with it soon. It’s an e-book so i should be able to manage it. Lets see.

Now I have some more books that I bought last month but I have not even touched them. Next month, October I am reading all only my books which I have been pushing off for like ever.

Are you tired of Spammers?

by Tina Basu September 4, 2014
written by Tina Basu
Okay tell me how many of you are utterly completely and absolutely tired of the spammers in your social media pages? I am sure there will be plenty. But there is a limit to it and I do not understand why these spammers do not understand I WILL NOT PUBLISH SUCH MATERIAL? COMMENT IN MY BLOG?FB PAGE???
As if the call centre calls were not enough invasion already that now it’s the spammers who I have to monitor. How I wish there was a DND for that! I probably have written some old post on it but these days the spammers are highly active in my blog. I like getting comments in my blog but imagine when you get a notification in your phone about a comment and you go on to see it’s some weird spam comment you simply feel like yelling. Specially with the kind of spam comments I am getting lately it’s becoming too much. From florists to cake deliveries to furniture makers, home jobs there is no end to the spammers. But the latest entrants are the Escort agencies and girls providing special services!!!!! What on earth made these guys feel my blog is an apt place for their advertisement? I fail to understand that.

But this particular girl has been commenting every single day with links to her website I believe (something that I didn’t open though). Just two words for you – STOP SPAMMING.

I face this in FB also… random people trying to befriend me, they want friendship etc etc. Give me a break people I am married and settled with a husband. And my FB is a personal page only for friends. I had to put up this cover photo for them particularly. I wish I could do that in my blog as well. Can we have a pinned post or something in Blogger???

P.S. There are also those group of spammers who sugar coat about you and your blog and tell you how much they liked your post and ask you to check back at their webpage and leave a link for it. When you click on that you get into a website selling their services, and some other random stuffs. I just got such a comment which I had to again mark as spam and thought of putting it up here!

Some times when less is not ok, for me

by Tina Basu September 2, 2014
written by Tina Basu

If you are following me on Twitter or FB then you will know how incredibly mad I am for this man. And lately I’m in that zone where I want Hrithik almost every where. I get into these modes often and then get back to youtubing some previous interviews or some random videos. I often get an urge to write a post on him, I have already written quite a few and am sure I’ll write even more. Now this is not a recent crush/ following/ being a fan or anything it’s a 14 year long nice feeling of watching an actor grow and feeling nice about the person.

Now why I’m writing this post is not to tell you how I feel crazy sometimes or how good he is (that’s what I think) or like another fan post. It’s to do with how crossed I am with Fox Studios. Like you know BangBang, his next movie, is due for release on 2nd October which is exactly 1 month from now and I am finding this studio house is not promoting their film at all… I don’t have a problem with the promotion or the business part, I am watching it anyways. But what do we have so far just a teaser and 1 song that’s it!!!! Tomorrow they are going to release the second song though. But isn’t it too less and too slow?? For me it is. Fox Studio, looks like, is too busy with Finding Fanny and some other film but please our Duggu darling is part of that one-film-a-year club. A HR fan gets to see him on screen so less anyways and just before the launch of this movie there is nothing, almost.

I heard PVR had started Pre-Booking for BangBang and I thought I’ll pick up my first day first show ticket, 2nd Oct being a holiday. But their site gives me option only for 4th and 5th Oct – which I have no idea why? But I’m pretty sure I’ll watch it on 2nd itself, even if it means I have to go to a stand alone theater. Actually I have not been in a stand alone theater since 2006!!! I dont even know if any stand alone theater in Bangalore screens any Hindi movie, but let’s see.

Now this is my current favorite song and no prizes for guessing. It’s on loop in my car, on my iphone and also in the laptop (for those times when you want to shut yourself at work and want to concentrate). Weird right? But I do it quite a lot, if I have to concentrate on some work I always keep some music/song in the background playing to stream line my thoughts. I am embedding the video of it here for you to listen, if you already have not caught it on Youtube.

Last evening when i was driving back home, I was sitting at this traffic signal in a place called Koramangala. When ever this song is playing I get into my dancing mood and I was dancing in my seat. Head bobbing, and totally grooving for about 130 seconds (that’s how long the signal makes us wait each time). It’s only after sometime that I realized people were staring at me thinking I was some mad person who was enjoying sitting at the red signal!!! Now tell me what do I do if the songs so cool and the actor in it is Hrithik looking and dancing at his best! I say to hell with you onlookers, I’ll enjoy anyway.

Are you one of those who’s crazy about someone?
