written by tinabasu

Flash fiction or micro fiction writing is a fiction writing work of extreme brevity. You express the emotion of characters, a plot in a very small number of words. AT #FridayFOtoFIction we give you a photo prompt and ask you to write a flash fiction or a micro fiction about the photo.

Did you know, fiction writing is good for you? It is a world of freedom and imagination. We are loving the entries in #FridayFotoFiction. Every week we are picking up a featured blogger and at the end of the month we pick up a monthly winner for consistent participation who wins cash prize/ Amazon Vouchers. Isn’t that cool!

#FridayFotoFiction Prompt Sep 15-20

The Friend – Micro Fiction #FridayFotoFiction

The day had finally arrived. The day for which Jude had waited for several years.

“All ready?”

“Yes boss” he replied in a low voice.

As Jude walked through the corridor his eyes longed for someone. He checked around him but didn’t see the familiar face.

“Sign here” pointed the clerk.

“Here’re your belongings” announced the clerk.

Jude was stepping out in the world after a very long time. He didn’t know if he could face the world again. Will the world accept him?

As he walked out of the penitentiary gates his eyes locked with those of a friend’s. A friend with whom he shared everything, over the last eight years. A friend, without whom, he’s incomplete.

Alex and Jude both were released on the same day. They walked towards their new life together. This time they didn’t bother about anyone. They wanted to be there for each other.

Are you thankful for Blogging Contest? #ThankfulThursdays Week 37

There are several blogging contests that are held round the year for bloggers across the world. These blogging contests are good for the health of your blog. Are you thankful for the blogging contests? Share your story with us on #ThankfulThursdays.

This post is a Top Post on Indiblogger on Sep 16 2017.

blogging contests thankful thursdays

What is the most exciting thing of being a blogger? Doing what you love and enjoying the freebies, gifts, winning contests, attending events, visiting brands and there are so many to name. I am blogging from quite a long time now. If you have been following me for some time you would know I started my blogging journey in 2011 with this blog which was then known as Twinkling Tina Writes – see my twinkling part never leaves me! That blog was more of a journal to capture glimpses of my daily life – I guess everyone starts their blog with that thought. Then I started doing book reviews and joined various book review clubs online. So free books became frequent – which also led to a situation that I had to read a few books which were trash and I had to leave mid way. But honestly if I find something trash I write that it’s not worth your time. Now I review books rarely. I write a review only if I like or really dislike something.

At some point of time I crossed paths with blogging platforms like Indiblogger and Blogadda where these blogging contests were like little parties. You participate and write a post with full gusto and wait for the result day. I had won a cleartrip voucher once for domestic travel for a travel post on Maldives. There have been many more contests and many more wins in cash or kind for which I feel nice somewhere. I also know a lot of people whose social media timelines are filled with rants about bloggers trying to commercialize everything –no one wants to write for the love of writing – blah blah. For them my little two cents would be – if you don’t like don’t participate, don’t monetize but it doesn’t make sense to rant if someone else is winning.

winner blogging contests

We, bloggers, write because we love to write. No blogger starts a blog or a website with the aim in mind to win only contests. But a win once in a while is great to boost your confidence. The single most thing that gives a blogger ultimate gratification is a comment by a genuine reader which says positive things about the post. When you win blogging contests because people have liked your posts or voted for them it is an amazing boost for your confidence in writing. I at least, see it that way.

Major Blogging Contests I have taken part in

Indivine contests on Indiblogger

Indiblogger is a great community of Indian bloggers in India and abroad and I love the people behind it. These contests were the hot topics back in 2011-2014 and unfortunately, has reduced for reasons best known to them or the brands. I have written for blogging contests sponsored by various brands like Dove, Cleartrip, Surf Excel and many more to name.

Happy Hours on Indiblogger

The happy hours used to be serious fun in winning shopping vouchers of Flipkart or Amazon. I was an ardent participant of most of the Happy Hours. I have no idea why they have stopped it. I wish they start them really soon. I gifted my husband an iPhone with all the vouchers (60% from vouchers and 40% from pocket, mind you).

The Game of Blogs Hosted by Blogadda

If you have been following my blog you will know I am a published author (something that is very exciting for me). I have been published in three anthologies. Blogadda had hosted a Pan India blogging contest on fiction writing. We had to form our team and write a fiction story in chapters on the given character sketches. My team, By Lines, ended up winning the Game of Blogs contest with a sci-fi thriller which later was published by Lead Start Publishing in the book 6 Degrees – the Game of Blogs. This is one of the most significant blogging contests of my blogging life. Not just for winning it but for virtual team work, making friends, donning the caps of editor, proof reader, team coach and every posiible thing that you can imagine!

You can connect with me on my Good Reads Author Page

Indian Bloggers League by Writeup Café

As I write this post at two in the night and going through these old posts I realize I used to take part in these blogging contests so often back in 2011-2014 era. I should take these up more often now too. In 2012 I had taken part in this Indian Bloggers League – a pan Indian blogging contest hosted by Writeup Café and I was participating as a food blogger from the Bangalore team. My Coconut Lime Punch with Cranberry Twist won the third prize. This was at a time when I had just started my food blog and was maybe 10 posts old! So this win remains quite special to me.

I keep taking part in now and then in social media contests on Twitter or Facebook. It always feels nice when you win – it’s kind of a stamp that readers are liking your work. I am thankful to these blogging contests for boosting my confidence to keep writing and keep getting better. I didn’t know when I had started this blog that I will take it up as a full-time job and earn a living out of it. But yes, when you check your website traffic stats and find out about 48% of your traffic is coming from Search Engines hen you have to be thankful for your writing, blogging contests, your dedication ( I am not as dedicated as I want to be, though).

thank you blogging contests

Now tell me about you? Have you taken part in blogging contests? Have you won a blogging contest? Are you thankful for the blogging contests? Share it with us in a blog post and add your link in the linky below.

Happy Grandparents Day – Why I miss them?  #LoveJatao

by tinabasu September 10, 2017
written by tinabasu

September 10th is celebrated as the Grandparents day. While it’s not enough to celebrate just a single day for the ever-loving grandparents, it’s important that you let them know why and how much you love them. Happy Grandparents Day to all the lovely grandparents around.

grandparents day

Have I celebrated Grandparents Day ever?

Very frankly I didn’t know about this Grandparents Day till the teacher at my son’s school sent a circular about a Grandparents Day celebration in the school three days back! Is it just another Hallmark greeting day? I hope not. My social media timeline is overflowing with the grandparent selfie and everyone discussing how lucky they are for the love of their grandparents. Really they are lucky. And I miss my grandparents today. I miss them, to the point of feeling sad, because I have never met them, because I have never known them. My dad lost his father, when he was in school and his mom a few years later. My mom happened to lose her dad while she was still studying in college and her mom before I had arrived. So I have no memory of my grandparents. I have only seen their framed photographs in the house. My dad says, he took up medicine because he was inspired by his father, who was also a doctor. All my uncles happen to be engineers but my dad decided to take his father’s legacy ahead.

For me my grandparents were my dad’s aunts who lived with us and who pampered me probably more than what my grandparents would have! As a child I spent a considerable time with ‘Mashi’, my dad’s maternal aunt, and with my dad’s ‘kakima’ who I always addressed as ‘kauma’ because I couldn’t pronounce kakima as a tiny tot. They have been my shields for a very long time. Whenever I had a grudge on my mom – for making me eat, for making me sleep, for asking me not to watch TV – I knew whom I could go and complain! For ‘Mashi’ I was the golden girl like P T Usha (she was very fond of her). But I lost ‘Mashi’ in 2011. My kauma had lost her two young daughters to jaundice and malaria when they were in teens. So I was practically born to fill up that space in her life. From shooing away baby sitters who were not clean to running behind me with a glass of milk, she had done everything. I was very happy that she lived to see my son. Yes I lost her when she was 98. Later in her life kauma had started to forget a lot of things but she never forgot the name ‘Tina’. This happened to the extent that she asked people to take me to her whenever anyone visited her, completely forgetting that I stay in another city. She also used to ask if I have eaten after coming back from school! With age, she was forgetting that I was expecting a child and not a school girl anymore.

grand[parents day

Kauma on my Babyshower

When I took my son to meet her, she had told me “bachchar jotno nio, akhon to amar shorir bhalo nei, noile ami thik kore ditam” [take good care of the baby, now my health is not permitting else I would have taken care of him]. She was 98 that time. And unfortunately we lost her a few months later. But that is the love of the grandparents – they always think about you, sometimes even more than your mother. Happy Grandparents Day Mashi and Kauma, you know I will always love you.

When I see my son’s grandparents now (my parents and in-laws both) I understand how much their grand kid means to them. My mother Facetimes at least five times a day and the first word is Bluey ki korche? [What is Bluey doing?] My dad calls every day at 9:05 am sharp, to ask if Bluey cried at school, if he ate breakfast before going to school. My in-laws call and always enquire about his health and whether he is eating well. My mom scans through my FB TL to see if I have uploaded a photo of my son and she has to, has to comment on them.

grandparents day

Bluey with his mum’s parents

Last time when I was in Kolkata and Bluey, being the ever restless kid, was running around the house throwing things and misplacing things. My mom-in-law tutors little kids at home but Bluey was not in a mood to let her teach and kept pulling her to play with him – to an extent that I ended up giving dictation to that little student while my mom-in-law fulfilled my son’s wish to play with her! Yes, that’s what a grandparent is – always there for you. All of you who have or still are enjoying the love of your grandparent give them a hug and tell them I love you! Not just on Grandparents Day but often. Because, you will not have them always. #LoveJatao to them right away.

grandparents day

Bluey with his paternal Grandparents

Here my son went alone to the Grandparents Day celebration at school since both sets of grandparents are in a different city. My mom, however, complained why I didn’t tell her earlier – she would have made plans to visit Bangalore to take him for this celebration. Next year, I’ll keep that in mind.

Here’s what they did on Grandparents Day Celebration – Cup Grandparents – aren’t they cute. He happened to paint the cups himself. I had a huge doubt on it though but then when the school uploaded these photos my doubt has been cleared!

The Mask – Fiction Writing #FridayFotoFiction Sep 8-13

Bonjour, Hello, Ola, Salam, welcome to another exciting week of #FridayFiction where we are gushing over fiction writing. This exercise is being great for making your imagination work a little extra. The photo prompt triggers a question – what is this? And from there starts the journey of fiction writing in a jiffy.

I tend to get weird ideas at the weirdest times – in the shower or just before I am about to sleep! Do you get these story lines at weird times? But are you new to fiction writing? Looking for some tips? Here are 5 tips for writing Flash Fiction, in case you wanted a detailed view.

#FridayFotoFiction Sep 8-13 Prompt

The Mask – Fiction Writing #FridayFotoFiction Sep 8-13

“Officer… officer… help me.

My daughter…. My Tia is lost…”

“Calm down ma’am. Take a seat. When did you last see you daughter?”

“An hour back.”

“It is too early to panic, ma’am. Have you checked with any of her friends?”

“What do you mean it’s too early? She is only 5… my baby… please do something, please I beg of you.”

“Where were you when you lost her?”

“At the park, she was playing right in front of me, I got a call…. I was checking my phone … next second she was not there”

The officer wrote down the details but had a hidden smirk under his expressionless face.

As she left, Sergeant Roland Brown had that smirk back. The cop’s duty was his perfect mask, no one would ever know the pedophile inside him. No one noticed him grabbing the little girl in the park.

Are you Thankful for Technology? #ThankfulThursdays Week 36

by tinabasu September 7, 2017
written by tinabasu

We live in a time where we are completely dependent on technology. There isn’t a thing in our life now, where technology doesn’t play a part. Are you thankful for technology?

Thankful for Technology

The decision to quit a job in one of the biggest FMCG brands was not easy. A job for a girl is not just about the paycheck, it is part of her identity and personality. I have received a lot of flak directly and indirectly that I gave up my career. Not many try to understand the emotions of a mother. People assume the moment your maternity leave ends you should be back at work and if you don’t you are not a professional woman and you are tagged “just a Stay-at-Home mom”. But did I really give up my career? Actually, I didn’t. I am that person who knows to bake the cake and eat it too! When you have confidence in yourself and your skillset, you don’t need a brand for your work – YOU are the brand.

I am indebted to technology for my identity. Where would I be if there wasn’t technology readily available at my disposal to start off a new career in Blogging? Do I express gratitude towards these little oxygens of my work life? Rarely. But today is the day when I must mention why I am thankful for technology.

Thankful For Technology #1 INTERNET

I still remember I was in 5th standard when we had this new Computer Classroom in school and the new addition to the curriculum. That’s when we first got the glimpse of the internet. From that day till now the internet has been the friend philosopher and guide in life. For anything and everything, I am dependent on the World Wide Web. The days my Wi-Fi doesn’t behave I almost lose my mind. Can I really survive without the internet? May be a week at max (i.e. if I am on a holiday) but then how will I Instagram the holiday photos! See the paradox?

Thankful For Technology #2 COMPUTERS

As a graphic designer, I owe a lot to my laptop and the softwares I use. Practically my career as a graphic designer will vanish if I am robbed off my (already dying) humble laptop. Can you survive without a computer / handheld device today? I think not.

Read – How to Design a Logo for your Blog

Thankful For Technology #3 PHONE

Today, without a phone I feel handicapped – quite literally. Am I a phone addict? I am a blogger and a social media influencer – hell yes I am a phone addict. I am present everywhere all the time. How I wish Siri could manage all my social media activities. I am thankful to my iPhone for being so patient with my son. He has abused the phone in every possible demonic way of a toddler but it still works and I click all the photos for my food blog on the iPhone. So I am pretty sure my food blog won’t survive if my phone breaks down and suddenly I realize my account says not enough money to fund a new phone. [Which is quite possible, you know how much struggle bloggers need to do for the payments to actually reach in their accounts].

Thankful For Technology #4 APPLIANCES

Can I survive a minimalist life where I don’t have access to any appliance? NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. I am highly dependent on almost all the appliances in the house to function properly and keep my sanity. I can’t get back to stone age!

Are you thankful for technology? I am sure you are. Let us know in a blog post about your tryst with technology. Join the #ThankfulThursday Blog hop hosted by me and Amrita from HealthWeathBridge.

10 things to keep in mind while choosing your dream home in Bangalore

by tinabasu September 4, 2017
written by tinabasu

Home is where the heart is. Someone has rightly said that your home will always be the place for which you feel the deepest affection. Everyone has a picture of their dream home – a home that reflects you, a home that makes you happy. But not all dreams come true. We might face issues when we are looking for a dream home in a popular, crowded city like Bangalore. Imagine looking for a dream home in Bangalore, and going through an enormous checklist of must haves.

I had researched for a long time when I was looking to buy an apartment for myself. Buying a luxury property in Bangalore is not easy. One might need to consider all aspects like location, amenities, proximity, etc. If you are looking for a dream home in Bangalore, the below mentioned 10 tips will definitely help you in turning that vision into reality.

Did you know this post is a Top Post on Indiblogger?

10 things to keep in mind while choosing your dream home in Bangalore

10 things to keep in mind while choosing your dream home in Bangalore

Location

A property in Bangalore might be an investment for life. You don’t want to travel across the city for neccessary things like visiting a hospital, bank, or getting groceries. Imagine having to drive through Bangalore traffic for 10 km to get to a hospital!

Proximity to Work & Good Schools

Traffic in Bangalore is crazy, and you would ideally want to keep your commuting stress at bay. Your dream home in Bangalore should be close to your work space and good schools so that you don’t have to go through the traffic woes.

Proximity to Bangalore Metro

Our Metro is the currently the hottest thing in the city. With Green and Purple lines already operational, Bangalore Metro is helping the daily commuters by reducing their travel time. Look for your dream home in Bangalore which falls in the metro corridor.

Reputed Builder

You would never want to bet your hard-earned money on a project by some random builder. There are many reputed builders in Bangalore with good track records. Do your research on their completed projects in Bangalore or other Indian cities.

Clear Titles

While it’s important to choose the builder wisely, you must check if the titles of the property are clear. If the project is BBMP or BDA approved then you don’t have to worry much. Properties in the outskirts fall under BMRDA or under Gram Panchayat jurisdiction. Always check if the builder has collected the NOCs or No Objection Certificates from BDA, without which you might not get the Occupancy Certificate. Look for properties with A Khata; the B khata ones are illegal.

Finance & Legal Checks

Finance plays a major part in deciding a dream home in Bangalore. Home-loans from nationalized banks with lower interest rates are far safer than the loans from private banks. The legal checks by State Bank of India (SBI) are most stringent. If the project is approved or financed by SBI, then you can invest in it without worrying too much.

Carpet Area

Always look out for the carpet area dimensions instead of Super Built up Area. Carpet Area is the area enclosed by the walls. It should at least be 70-80% of the Super Built Up Area. Any lesser means a lot of space is going away in the common area. So, watch out for it.

Amenities Offered

Any good real estate project offers a variety of amenities for the residents so that they don’t have to step out for activities like the gym, swimming, health club, sports facilities, etc. Bangalore is a great city, but the traffic can get to you. It is always better to buy a property where these amenities are easily accessible.

Power Back Up

Bangalore is famous for its erratic power supply. Having DG power backup is a necessity today. 1 KVA power back up will be sufficient to run the fans, lights, normal plug points in all rooms. If the developer provides back-up only for common areas and 1 light source in the apartment – it should be a no go for you.

Interior Decoration

The journey from a house to your dream home depends on how you decorate it – accentuated walls, customized modular kitchen, a theme room for kids perhaps. Good interiors play a big part in making your home beautiful. There’s no dearth of good interior designers and firms in this city to add a spark to your dream home in Bangalore.

Areas like Whitefield, Mahadevpura, KR Puram currently are happening spots in Bangalore with many entertainment and infrastructure developments. These places will be easily accessible by the metro shortly. I have been doing a research on luxury properties in Bangalore and the Casagrand Luxus in KR Puram is looks like an ideal buy. This gated villa community spread over 9-acre land houses 112 Independent luxury villas & 13 apartments consisting of 4BHK and 3 BHK villas and 2BHK apartments. The key point of this project which is currently under construction is, of course, its location – it’s only about 5 mins from the KR Puram lake which is surrounded by IT Parks and very close to Mahadevpura and Whitefield Road.

The 3BHK villas with a built-up area of 2520 sq. ft. start at 1.54 Cr onwards looks like a good deal because when you own a villa you and own the land as well. KR Puram could be one of the prime spots for your dream home in Bangalore. One can expect good value appreciation prospect in this location.

I hope these tips will help you in choosing your dream home in Bangalore. What are your ideas of your dream home, share your thoughts with me in comments below.
