 “I’m glad you came.”

“Of course I would, do I look that evil?”

“Stop that now!”

They continued their little conversation while the waiter brought their coffees and cookies. But there were many unspoken words between them waiting to come out.

“I gave a thought over last couple of years – what I did to you was wrong. What I did to the kids was wrong.”

“I am glad, you realize that Evan.”

“I do, but I took too long. I had hurt you.”

“Evan, I have never told you this earlier… I feel I had blown it out of proportion, I didn’t give you a chance to explain”

“Can you give a chance now?” he asked as she stared in his warm blue eyes.

“To us?” he continued.

“Evan I still love you, a divorce can’t erase all the memories we have shared”

“Let’s make some more memories, my love”.

Looking for Apartments in Bangalore? Here’s how I found my home. #ThankfulThursdays Week 39

by tinabasu October 5, 2017
written by tinabasu

Are you looking for apartments in Bangalore? Buying a property in Bangalore can be challenging. Here’s how I found my home. Sharing my personal experiences that might help you.

apartments in Bangalore, ThankfulThursdays

I moved base to Bangalore when I decided to do a post-graduation and post that joined work here. When I got married in 2010 we shifted to a rented apartment near my work place. Next we shifted to another bigger apartment in Domlur main road which was still near my office. Since we knew we are going to settle in Bangalore we thought of looking for apartments in Bangalore and investing in one. And I am thankful we took that decision, we found an apartment and built a home in it.

Why you should buy a property instead of staying on Rent?

There are two kinds of people in the migratory population in any city. One who are in transferable jobs and one who want to settle down in the city. We are in the second kind. We still have the option of migrating to a new place open but we know it’s not happening immediately. Paying a 20,000 INR rent every month for a decent sized 2 BHK apartment in a residential complex amounts to 2.4L a year which is 1.2 million INR in 5 years. If you are planning to stay in the rented apartment for close to 5-6 years in the same city, it’s wise to get your own apartment.

Buying Apartments in Bangalore – Do you need a checklist?

Bangalore is like a real estate heaven, you are spoilt for choices – ultra modern luxury apartments, compact condominiums, studio apartments, spacious villas, there’s everything according to your budget. We always wanted to stay in a residential complex with all sorts of amenities. We didn’t want to go out and get a membership at a health club. That time we thought when we have kids they should get ample free space to run around and play than just a slide and swing or a sandpit! Read this home buying guide, it might help you.

Few things that were MUST for me in my house hunting checklist were

  1. Open spaces in complex
  2. Lots of green areas and trees (I need to de-stress with a walk)
  3. Ample natural light and wind inside the house (who wants to switch on light in the morning?)
  4. No main road facing apartment (I hate constant honking and pollution)
  5. Easy public transport
  6. Proximity to work
  7. Large balcony for my container garden
  8. Large and airy kitchen
  9. Privacy (who wants to see what’s happening in your neighbour’s house when you are on your balcony!)
  10. Good security system

Areas for buying the property

Since our workplaces were on Old Airport Road and Koramangala we were looking to buy an apartment around those areas. Koramangala is quite a posh place now. With huge development in the retail sector, this area within the last 5 years has become the hottest place to live. But the kind of space we were looking for were all out of our budget. We didn’t want a 1200 sq ft 2BHK kind of place. Since we planned to live in this property we wanted it to be big spacious. And we didn’t have 2 crores to spend on an apartment! There are people with the ideology, start with a 2 BHK as your first property and then buy a 3BHK few years later! I am sorry we don’t see logic there. We have multiple properties in Kolkata (our hometown) where we have to pay property taxes. I don’t think I want multiple properties in this city unless we end up winning ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ or some lottery! This home loan is big enough to pay off for next 1 decade. So we believed in getting the best that we can with the funds that we have currently.

We have searched for a property for almost over a year because we wanted maximum ticks on the above mentioned checklist. But getting all of that positive on one property was getting difficult. We were all across the city at extreme ends – Whitefield, Kadugodi, KR Puram, Marathahalli, Brookfield, Kanakpura Road, Nagwara Junction near Hebbal, Electronic City, Sarjapura Road and God knows where all! Either we didn’t like the complex, or we found the apartment too dark or tiny. We later decided we needed to get a finished ready-to-move-in apartment. EMI and rent together would make life very difficult.

Zeroing in on the Property

We had checked a few apartments in the complex where we currently stay. It was on the fourth floor but it faced the main road. So we dropped the plan, but Ajmera Infinity in Electronic City was one of the best looking property with clear titles that we had seen during our house hunt. After rejecting some more apartments we were back at this property seven months later to check a few apartments in the new blocks which were getting finished that time. These seemed to be a dream home with at least 9 ticks on the checklist! So we simply booked it at the marketing office.

apartments in Bangalore, ThankfulThursdays

Is Electronic City a good area to stay?

I visited Electronic City for the very first time when we came to check out this property. It seemed far. But the Hosur Road Elevated Expressway is a gift for daily commuters. You do need to pay a toll fee to use it but its worth it. 10 KM of traffic free road when you have to reach somewhere fast is a gift. Period. I can cover this distance in flat 10 minutes. I have used the main road below the flyover and I could cover the same distance in 1 hr! So you know how thankful I am for this.

Pros of Staying in EC:

Electronic City has developed over last few years and we have seen the growth in front of our eyes. From retail sector to schools, from banks to convenience stores everything is there. It’s like an island on its own. If your workplace is in EC you should definitely try to stay in EC itself.

Cons of Staying in EC:

Electronic City is under the jurisdiction of ELCITA and not BBMP so the infrastructure development in the corporate areas is under them including roads and drainage. The residential area falls under the gram panchayat here so the potholes take time to be filled! But then which area of Bangalore doesn’t have a pothole or drainage issue?

There are no full-fledged shopping malls in EC, unfortunately. There’s one under construction which looks like will take an eternity to get functioning!”

Arranging Funds

The biggest challenge for any 30 something working couple while buying a property is the finance! And apartments in Bangalore doesn’t come in cheap! While buying home please lok out for two things

  1. If the property has A khata
  2. If the property is funded by Nationalized bank (SBI is safest bet)

If you manage to get a loan passed by the State Bank of India then you know your property and its titles are safe. Private banks are more than eager to give you loans in 3 days but SBI’s legal check on titles is the best.

Yu still have to give the 20% upfront payment from your pocket – that’s where you need to have funds. And believe me giving off 10-15 Lakhs from account feels like a pinch!

My Home – Am I thankful for it?

We finally bought a 3BHK of 1700sq ft in this beautiful apartment complex. The residential complex looks beautiful with over 100 trees inside the campus. Having your own home the way you have always wanted is a great feeling. We took time to build the space between the walls as our home sweet home. This home has seen us through a lot. This home welcomed our son. I am thankful that my son is growing up in his own place and can draw/ scribble/ pain walls according to his imagination and wish.

A post shared by Tina Basu (@twinklingtina) on Sep 11, 2017 at 10:13pm PDT

It also houses my tiny office (I am the only employee, so its fine!) I have made multiple nooks and corners where I can sit and work (hiding my laptop from my son is a big task, I tell you). I still have to create many more memories in this home and with my family to last me a lifetime, but if I ask if I am content with my home currently, the answer is yes.

Reading to your kids is a good habit, most of the times kids remember the stories they have grown up on. There’s nothing lovelier than cuddling up with your kid with a bedtime storybook. Here are 10 must have books for toddlers library that will spark their imagination. The essential books for toddlers also help them learn basic of language.

Must Have books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

must have books for toddlers

I have been reading to my son, since he was a few months old. And now I often need to read and sing during his bedtime. If I miss out on it ever, he brings his teddy and the rhymes book and snuggles up with me. Yes, he wants his teddy to listen to these stories too! These must-have books for babies encourage them to explore their sensory skills while the books for toddlers and preschoolers help them learn the basics of English language and help them speak.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

must have books for toddlers

This book has been one of the most popular books amongst infants and toddlers since 1969! The Very Hungry Caterpillar has some beautiful mixed media collages of the journey of a baby caterpillar – how it feeds to chocolates, fruits, cakes, leaves and finally transform into a butterfly. This book encourages kids to learn colors, fruits, numbers. Babies little fingers will enjoy poking the holes.

Bedtime Baby Touch and Feel

must have books for toddlers

The Bedtime Baby Touch and Feel book by DK, or Dorling Kindersley, is a very good book to encourage sensory feels in a baby. This board book is specially designed with colorful illustrations and textures that baby can touch and feel. They can feel the textures of wool, blanket, teddy’s coat. This book aims at helping the babies and toddlers with their brain development while they indulge in their favorite bedtime activity: playing.

Baby Touch Peekaboo

must have books for toddlers

The Baby Touch Peekaboo from the house of Ladybird is a fun book for kids. It has large illustrations of animals, helicopters, tractors to almost everything that will wow a toddler. It comes with large and sturdy flaps that a baby loves to turn.

ABC Board Book

There are various board books for kids that has alphabets in it. I like the pocket-sized ABC Board Book that has large alphabets and its corresponding words. The size is perfect for a toddlers hands and they find it easy to flip over. These encourage kids to learn alphabets and words.

Numbers Board Book

Just like the alphabet board books, the pocket-sized Numbers Board Book. This book is in a kid-friendly size. Even if your baby wants to tear the pages, they can’t because these it’s a board book.

Musical Nursery Rhymes Book

must have books for toddlers

The Musical Nursery Rhymes Board book by Felicity Brooks and Richard Johnson is one of the best books you can get for your toddler’s library. We got it as a gift and it remains my son’s favorite book. Toddlers can press the buttons on the pages to hear the tunes for seven nursery rhymes. It includes Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo-peep, Sing a Song of Sixpence and Hey Diddle Diddle, Old Mother Hubbard, Jack and Jill and Mary Mary Quite Contrary. My son’s favorites are Hey Diddle Diddle and Sing a Song of Six Pence.

First 100 Words

must have books for toddlers

The First 100 Words by Roger Priddy is one of the finest books for your toddler that encourages kids to say words. This padded board book contains first 100 easy words that your toddler can speak with large photos and illustrations.

Three Little Pigs

Toddlers while learning names of animals and rhymes are always fascinated with animals. Books with stories of animals are very popular among kids. Three Little Pigs from the house of Ladybird remains one of the popular books amongst preschoolers. You can read this classic fairy tale during bedtime.

Turn and Learn Farm

must have books for toddlers

We got this Turn and Learn Farm book for a kid’s store and the toddler took a liking instantly. It has a wheel with animal photos that you can turn and match with the corresponding page. It encourages the toddlers to think and match the photos – a very good cognitive skill exercise.

Potty

must have books for toddlers

Training toddlers for the toilet is a huge task. It is very difficult unless that toddler is asking himself where he needs to pee or poop in the toilet or the diaper. The book Potty by Leslie Patricelli is a wonderful board book with funny illustrations that encourage kids to sit in the potty instead of doing it in the diaper.

These 10 must have books for babies, toddlers and preschoolers will make your baby’s library quite a colorful one. Books are your best friends after-all. Inculcate the habit of reading books early – it will help them in the long run.

Flash Fiction Writing Challenge – #FridayFotoFiction – Mercy

His luggage was packed waiting to get in the car.

A life with the young and beautiful Evelyn was waiting.

“Dad… dad… are you there? Mom’s not breathing” screamed his 13-year-old.

“Call 911 dad, she is not responding”

He flipped his phone punching in the three numbers in haste while climbing up the stairs.

“Dad…”

“I’m co……” the words hung in the air as Rob tripped and fell down the stairs.

As he lay at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood memories of years with Jemma and their daughter in this house kept flashing in his mind.

Jemma had forgiven him every time, even when he had slept with her best friend.

She believed in mercy.

And I was leaving her to be with the young girl!

I don’t think there’s any mercy left for me, he thought as he vanished in the darkness.

Memories of Durga Puja – Are you Thankful for it? #ThankfulThursday Week 38

by tinabasu September 28, 2017
written by tinabasu

Durga puja or Durgotsav is an annual Hindu festival specially popular among Bengalis. Memories of Durga puja is always a bittersweet one. While you rejoice on all the five days, you are sad at the end because it’s over and a year-long wit starts.

For Bengalis Durga puja is not just a festival, it is an emotion. We start our year by marking the dates of Durga puja. There is hardly any Bengali who doesn’t revel during the Durga Puja. Durga Puja means new clothes, holidays, adda with family and friends, food, pandal hopping and loads of fu – something that cannot be compensated by anything else. Memories of Durga Puja, for us is always about fun and nostalgia.

Memories of Durga Puja – New Clothes

As kids we would wait to ask friends – kota jama holo ebar? [how many dresses for pujo?]. Gifting new clothes to family is a ritual that is seen in every family. All five days people try to wear new clothes. As kids we would get new clothes from every member of the family and have a change of dress twice or even thrice a day! Durga Puja is the time when you are seen in your finest clothes, new shoes, new accessories.

Memories of Durga Puja – Barir Pujo

We used to have a Durga Puja in our family, which unfortunately has stopped now, because half the family – speacially my generation – is scattered over India and abroad! There is a different flavor to barir pujo, or the puja that is specific to your family. You are actively participating in every process. When we were younger all of us (my cousins) were given the responsibility of decoration. From giant alpona or rangoli with color paints to decorating the pandal on terrace, we did everything. It takes three purohits or priests on all days for the Durga Puja.

When you visit only the public puja pandals – which we call baroari pujo – you don’t get to see about the actual puja process. There are days of different pujas including time for donning the weapons on the goddess, sandhi puja when Goddess Durga had killed the asura – and many more, which calls for another post!

memories of Durga Puja

Memories of Durga Puja – Pandal Hopping

In Kolkata pandal hopping is a spctcular thing – you need to see it with your eyes to believe it. There are thousands and thousadnds of people out on the streets hopping pandals even through the night. Kids, elderlies, young no one skips it. We cousins have been to these whole-night pandal hopping sessions and got lost in the crowd innumerable times. Those days there were no mobiles that you would co-ordinate your location. But it is all nostalgia now.

Memories of Durga Puja – Probashe Pujo

Bengalis who stay away from Bengal or their home-town are probashi bangalis and our probashe pujo is no less extravagant like the ones in Kolkata. In Bangalore you have a good population of Bengalis, so that has resulted in multiple Durga Pujas across the city. Almost every big Indian cities have some Durga Puja being organized by the Bengali associations there.

Subho Mahashtami. We wait for a whole year and these 5 days run away in supersonic speed! . #durgapuja #durgapujo #durgapooja #navratri #indian #festival #goddess

A post shared by Tina Basu (@twinklingtina) on Sep 28, 2017 at 7:28am PDT

But forget India, there are various Durga Pujas being organized these days across various cities across the world because a sizable portion of the Bengali population is settled abroad. You can be in the UK, US, places in Europe or Asia and you will find a Durga Puja almost anywhere. My Facebook TL is currently flooded with photos of Durga Puja in various states of US.

Memories of Durga Puja – Being ethnic

Subho Bijoya everyone. This is post the traditional sindur khela that Bengali women do with the vermilion. Its a way of wishing each other happy long married life. . Women dress up in traditional Bengali red and white saree. Married women wear the red and white shankha-pola and gold- signs of married life and prosperity. . On the tenth day of the puja or Dashami, Bengali women do Durga Boron, or worship the goddess with beetle leaves, vermillion, sweets and seek her blessings. . It is an emotional day for us, because its the day of immersion and also start of another year long wait. . #bijoya #durgapuja #durgapujo #sindurkhela #sindur #indian #bengali #culture #festival #navratri #beingbengali #lifestyle #lifestyleblogger

This is one time of the year when I ditch all other kinds of clothes and take out my sarees – which I don’t get to wear as much as I want. These five days it’s all about being closest to your roots – Bengali sarees, Bengali food, Bengali songs, pandal hopping. When I was working, I made it very clear – ‘These five days I am taking leave’ and I have always been around to see the Puja.

This year I took my son around the city to three – four Durga Pujas in Bangalore. I want him to form fond memories of this festival and our culture, even though I don’t see myself going back and living in Kolkata in future.

The son turned out to be smarter, no parting with the dandiyas and super poses for the camera! #navratri #navratri2017 #dandiya #dandiyanight #baby #toddlerfashion #toddler #toddlerethnicfashion #momlife #mommasboy #mommyandson

He was in fact very happy to wear the ethnic clothes and gorged on some egg rolls, Mughlai parathas, sweets and phuchka of course! I took him to a dandiya night at our complex. I believe he should get a slice of every festival and know his cultures of his country from close quarters. There are no dearth of reasons to be thnkful for the Durga Pujas or Navratri.

Now that the Durga Puja is over it doesn’t feel very nice. No more pandal hopping, no more having fun during puja. Now the wait’s till next Oct 15th, 2018!

Ahmedabad has seen a developmental boom in the last 10 years. The growth that the city has seen is far more than any other city. The best charm of Ahmedabad lies in the amalgamation of the old city and the new city, separated by the Sabarmati River and connected by bridges.

One of the major and the most gorgeous sights of Ahmedabad is the beautification of the banks of the Sabarmati River. Riverfront Park and Flower Park are the two parts of the beautified Sabarmati banks.

Riverfront Park is a place for relaxing, jogging, strolling, catching up with friends or just breathing in the Ahmedabad breeze. It is filled with loads of recreational activities to kill your boredom. On the other hand, Flower Park is shy and not too loud. The only time, the introverted Flower Park becomes the hero of Ahmedabad is during its renowned Flower show.
