20 Best Blogging Tools & Resources for new bloggers in 2020

by tinabasu October 20, 2020
written by tinabasu

For any new blogger finding the best blogging tools & resources can be a challenge if you don’t know where to find.

Blogging Tools and Resources for new bloggers are like essentials because they help you grow your blog. I use a lot of these resources myself so thought why not share this with you guys.

None of these links or resources are affiliates, not am I making any money out of this post. Just some good Karma. That’s like my theme for this year’s #MYFriendAlexa.

Okay, so you have decided to start a Lifestyle Blog and have Designed your own Logo for the blog. Let’s make the blog pretty and robust!

Okay, so what are we looking for here? What Resources are you yapping about?

Do you remember those computer application classes in school (if you are a 2002-2004 pass out, you will get it). We learned designing webpages on HTML! Please, they looked hideous! Mine did at least. We have come a long way. You don’t need to know designing, coding blah blah blah to run a smooth robust blog.

This post is about Blogging Tools & Resources to make your blog pretty. The next post will be about some essential plugins that you might need.

Best Blogging Tools & Resources for new bloggers in 2020

best blogging tools and resources

#1 Get some Themes for your Blog, half the work is done

If your platform is on Wordpress and you have a domain you have loads of options even in free themes. I would suggest buying a theme for your blog if you are serious about it, else pick a free theme with a clean design.

The secret to good design ANYWHERE – is it being user friendly, and clean. Remember Less is More.

Here are a few places you can get a theme for your blog. Upload it in your themes section and you are good to go. But, always keep a backup first, then do tweaks on your blog, if its not a new blog.

  1. Creative Market – Looking for chic themes, visit them, register and get free goods too!
  2. Evanto Market  – It is like THE place for web related stuffs – themes, social media packs, UI, graphics – you name it they have it. It’s the place Graphic Designers visit!
  3. Wordpress.org – Or just check Wordpress, they have some clean themes too, but you can face customization limitations.

#2 Visual Content Generation

If “content is king” then the crown jewels are visual content.

A blog will look pretty when you have a good mix of text and photos.  Try to take your own photos in good lighting else use some stock photos. But just putting up a standard stock photo is not enough. Try and make engaging visual content. These online Blogging Tools and Resources will be very helpful, believe me.

You need to upload images in correct sizes for each platform so that when they are shared you get the best out of it. Leave the size customization to these apps and sites!

  1. Canva – Like I even need to say, everyone knows Canva – its super easy and you practically need to just drag and drop. You have all the possible formats and sizes found under the sun in Canva. I use it too sometimes.
  2. PicMonkey – Just start a Free Trial and start using it. You can even edit photos for Instagram or your Blog
  3. Snappa – It’s very similar to Canva. Have lots of free images in the library too
  4. PiktoChart – If you want to make pictorials, infographics, statistics, data for your post please use this.

#3 Stock Photos

I love using stock photos! I really love them. When I am not creating my own photos, I just use stock photos. Easy! There are few places where I hardly use stock photos – like my Instagram. I like to take credit of my photos on my Feed, so it is stock photo free. But for the blog – please use as much.

You can find photos of all kinds of categories in some of these stock photo sites. But use them the correct way.

  1. Give credit – wherever required.
  2. No need to credit if photos are under CC0 licensing – check when you download
  3. If you have a food blog and do recipes – DO NOT use stock photos – use your own photos
  4. If you review products for a lifestyle blog, beauty blog – use your own photos
  5. Travel reviews – use own photos

If you are doing a general post, article post where you are not doing a review – please use stock photos.

Here are some sites that will help you.

You might also like: 13 Best Free Stock Photo Sites

  2. Pexels
  3. Pixabay
  4. Stocksnap.io
  5. Freestocks.org
  6. FoodiesFeed (for Food Bloggers)

#4 Feminine Stock Photos

feminine stock photos Pic Courtesy – Elle Drouin

I absolutely love white flat lays! It is so soothing t the eyes. If you are someone who likes feminine stock photos, look for memberships or freebies in the below-mentioned places.

  1. Haute Stock
  2. Pixistock
  3. Styled Stock Society
  4. Shutterstock (no free Photos)
  5. Adobe Creative Stock (no free Photos)
  6. Create Her Stock
  7. Ivory Mix

There you go, here’s all that you need to make your blog pretty and chic. Other stuff, you might want to do is create a to-do list on Excel and have it open all the time – works better than a notebook and a pen (for me, at least), good music ( I like to listen to music while writing) and a hot cuppa, or just water!

Now tell me are you enjoying my Blogging Tips series? Tell me what do you want to know more, so that I can prepare a post on it.

How To Create A Blog Logo For Your Lifestyle Blog

by tinabasu October 15, 2020
written by tinabasu

Create a Blog Logo for your Lifestyle Blog and make your branding game strong. This Blog Logo Tutorial will teach you to make your customized logo using free resources.

So now, you have decided to launch a blog – you have some content ready and have got a theme in mind too. But what about your blog’s identity? Yes, one of the first things you should do before publishing your blog is to create a blog logo for your lifestyle blog. This logo will be used almost everywhere that is related to your blog of social media.

Think of the blog’s logo as your signature. Use it on your social media graphics, on your blog graphics, and even in your email signature. You will find my logo in almost everything I put up on social media.

Logo Designing? That’s a graphic designer’s job right?

It’s strange right, a logo always doesn’t have to be an extravagant one. If you need a customized design for yourself or your blog with elements that will tell your story – that will create your identity – you must take professional help.

I do Logo Designing for brands and Blogs you can check that on my portfolio. You can connect with me through the form or email me at twinklingtina {at} gmail {dot] com.

However, when you are launching your blog, and don’t want to invest way too much, you can always use a distinct font and shapes to create a simple text logo for yourself! That’s what I’m sharing with you today.

Sometimes less is better.

What are we learning in this Logo Designing Tutorial?

We are going to do two variations of the same logo. A fancy horizontal text logo that can be used as your header – on blog, social media, visiting cards etc. Like the one below.

And a submark logo which is a smaller format of the main logo that can be used for watermarking your photos on blog or social media.

blog logo design

Always watermark your photos – it’s your intellectual property – you don’t want anyone misusing it.

I don’t have a damn idea about Design Software! What the hell?

No worries, you have Canva! I am doing this blog logo design on Canva because its very popular with bloggers. You can use any other similar service.

I am using all free fonts and graphics. No need to go pro.

Pro Tip: You can use Canva Pro for a month for free. So if you need good graphics/fonts, go Pro and then cancel after you are done!

P.S. This post is not sponsored, nor does it have any affiliate links! Just some Knowledge Transfer and good Karma!

But if you have good Photoshop Skills or you know how to work on Illustrator or Indesign – please make use of that. In that case, you have even download premade layouts and tweak it according to your choice and customize for yourself.

What to keep in mind while Designing a Blog Logo for your Lifestyle Blog?

  1. Be authentic
  2. Keep Simplicity
  3. Readable Font
  4. Pleasing color palette

I am a graphic designer and have handled one of India’s biggest FMCG brand’s outdoor and in shop branding for close to 6 years.

Take it from me – jarring colors, extremely twisty curly “script fonts” gives you sore eyes. So please be considerate, don’t end up making bright Red and Yellow Logo for your lifestyle blog, because you are not a news channel, you are not in a shop with 10 competitors on the same shelf.

Go easy.

Features of a good Logo

  1. Easily Readable
  2. People should easily recognise it as your blog’s identity
  3. It should reflect the color and mood of your entire blog and the content you create

Tips for choosing color palette

  1. Do you write content for the female audience – choose feminine colors
  2. DO you write content for kids – choose pastel kids colors
  3. DO you have a food blog – choose 1 bright color

And so on.

How To Create A Blog Logo For Your Lifestyle Blog - Mood Board color palette

Ok done. How do I start designing the logo?

So let’s say we have a blog called My Glorious Blog. It is a lifestyle blog by a girl in 30s! And she writes about Lifestyle and Beauty.

#1 So how is she going to position her blog’s identity?

  • Her blog’s for the female audience
  • She reviews luxury products
  • She does DIY, makeup posts/videos
  • She has a very clean theme in her posts
  • She is positioning her brand as a Luxury Lifestyle Blog

#2 Now choosing the theme

  • Clean design with intricate little work
  • No bright color
  • Feminine touch

Please keep in mind, feminine touch is NOT PINK! I have had clients who only wanted pink. That was the brief – I want a PINK LOGO!!!!  Or a client asking for a Blue Logo only because his competitor has a red logo! It doesn’t work like that.

“The strongest logos tell simple stories.” —Sol Sender

How To Create A Blog Logo For Your Lifestyle Blog on canva free

Now Let’s Open Canva for the Actual Logo Design

  1. Log in to your Free Canva Account
  2. Hit Logo design from the options and choose “Create a Blank Logo”
  3. For the Text Header Logo hit “Text” and choose the font “Amsterdam Two” and write the word “glorious” (or whatever if your hook word in your brand’s name)
  4. Choose the color from your palette. #02696d

logo design tutorial on canva

  1. Add the rest of the text in the font “Prompt Medium” and choose a muted color. I am choosing a dark grey color.

PRO TIPS: Focus on only one part of a Text Logo. I am choosing a script font for the glorious and going with easy fine straight fonts.

logo design tutorial on canva

  1. Now choose Text> Add a little bit of Body Text
  2. Add your tagline “Lifestyle & Beauty”
  3. Choose a simple thin font. I am using “Open Sans Light”
  4. Now go to Elements > Monoline Elements and add a shape to give a sense of composition to the text logo.
  5. I am adding this diamond shape and placing it in a way to encompass the word glorious.
  6. Go to position and hit Backward so that the shape is behind the text “glorious”
  7. Push the words “My” and “Blog” to align properly at the angles of the diamond shape.
  8. Align “Lifestyle & Beauty” Tagline to the centre.
  9. Save it as PNG. The default size will be 500 X 500 px.

logo design tutorial on canva

So your Text header is ready. It has a white background but that’s okay if you want to use it as a header. To remove the white background you can use sites like Remove White Background

Now Let’s Make the Sub Mark Logo

  1. Use the same shape from Monoline Elements
  2. Write mgb in lowercase (short form of the brand name) in the same brand color
  3. Let the tails of “g” and “b” hang out of the shape to give it a dimension.
  4. Write the full text “My Glorious Blog” and align it to the line of the shape using the rotate tool.
  5. The full name is in the font Open Sans.
  6. You can make this in brand color, single color (full black or full white) to use as a watermark
  7. Save it in a similar way as the header and remove the white background using any of the online sites.

Tada!! Your header logo and sub mark logo are ready! And you didn’t have to spend a dime!

A Beautiful Lifestyle Blog Logo ready in minutes and you can boast about your creativity!

Where all can you use this Logo?

  1. Do you create Pinterest images? Use the Sub Mark logo there
  1. Use the text logo for your Blog’s Header
  1. Use it in your business card / visiting card or letterhead if you use it (will do a separate post on it)
  1. Use it in your media kit (will do a separate post on it)
  2. Any Social Media Images
  1. Any printable/downloadable content you give in your blog as freebies

Reinforcing the logo in multiple ways will only create your identity bolder and better.

10 Best Baby Wash in India 2020: A Guide To Baby Bath Washes for little ones

by tinabasu October 8, 2020
written by tinabasu

Here’s a list of 10 Best Baby Wash in India in 2020. This comprehensive guide will let you choose the best baby bath wash for your little one.

Baby’s skin is delicate and sensitive. As a mom, I try to avoid products that have too many chemicals in them, because the skin absorbs everything. Just like how I am observant about the kind of food or snack he takes in – I am pretty attentive about the ingredients that go in his skincare products.

Maintaining good personal hygiene is very important at this time – not just the hands but keeping your baby’s body clean is vital too. Choosing the right product for your baby can get challenging because there are so many options available today in the market.

Baby’s skin is sensitive and soft, finding the best baby wash lies in checking the ingredients that go in it. The baby wash should preferably nourish their skin and clean dirt and germs effectively.

Now that you are in the middle of a pandemic and have got accustomed to working from home, have you realized you have found some time to dedicate towards your hobby? We all have so much to say. Like me, these days you will find me pouring my opinions on Twitter.

But if you want a creative outlet of your opinion – a blog is your answer. You can make a personal blog, an online journal, share your expertise and so much more. Here I am today, trying to convince you reasons to start a Blog in 2020, if you already don’t have one and make some money too.

Wait, A Blog? I thought they were dead!

No. It’s not dead, nor is it dying anytime soon. Period. We are living in the age of Instagram and beautiful looking feeds. But blogging is more valuable than Instagramming alone. what is the Attention span on Instagram is of a few seconds while blogs are permanent and your readers can always come back and read.

There are a ton of bloggers, how do I make a successful blog?

Making a successful blog requires exactly those 3Cs that you would do in your day job – CONTENT, CONSISTENCY, COMMUNICATION. Yes, as simple as that. Content, still, is King. If your content is not good, not original and not creative there are lesser chances of your building an audience base.

So here’s what you will get to know by the end of this post

  1. Reasons to Start Blogging in 2020
  2. Free Vs. Self-Hosted Blogs
  3. Basic SEO you need to work on
  4. Attracting Brands for paid posts!

This is quite a detailed post so hang on!

10 Reasons to Start a Blog in 2020

reasons to start a blog in 2020

#1 Invest this Time

2020 has taught us a lot of patience. You have time in your hand since you are not wasting that being stuck in traffic – use it wisely for a hobby or self-improvement. Why not a blog?

#2 People are on Social Media all day – People are reading

My food blog is going crazy! People are spending more time on Social Media and blogs in 2020. My old food posts and DIY posts on this blog have a sudden spike. So people are reading quite a few blogs in 2020. Share your content, let people read/ look at your creativity!

#3 Love of Food

Food Blogs and Food YouTube Channels have had the best graph in 2020. Everyone wants recipes, easy basic recipes because everyone’s eating home in 2020. If you love cooking/baking/ cake decorating/ – start a blog, already.

#4 Love for DIY & Tutorials

If you follow some of these Lifestyle publications of UK you will find daily posts like “This Birmingham mom did a room makeover with bargain buys”.  If you like home improvement and do a lot of DIYs why not make a post about it with a before and after pictures and share it with your readers. DIY’s attract a lot of eyeballs. Believe me.

Like the above if you are good at photo editing, making short videos, or you are good at taking photos, doing makeup, draping a saree – share that knowledge in the form of a tutorial. Everyone is consuming content in 2020. Be out there and make your content.

#5 3 Cs – Content, Consistency, Communication – it is your identity

I will again, reiterate – Content is King. Inspired content will not take you anywhere. Your voice, your creativity will matter if you want to build an audience.

Consistency is the key to making your blog a successful blog. If you are not updating your blog with two or three new posts every week Google search console will not be happy about it!

The way you communicate with your audience is your voice. It is how your audience connects with you.

Your blog could be your new identity – have you thought about it?

#6 Channelize your creativity, talk to people

Your communication is limited right now over FaceTime and Zoom Calls. We will be stuck at home, for God knows how long. This is the best time to start a blog in 2020 and talk to people. Share the feelings that you might not be able to share with your family. Channelize your creativity.

#7 Let’s talk money

Okay, you can’t start making money from your first blog post. That’s not possible unless you are a celebrity (right now, I will urge not to follow celebrities blindly, anyway). But within three months – if your content is good you can get paid gigs and start working with big brands.

#8 Get busy with something meaningful

If you don’t have a day job, you can try doing something creative and meaningful with blogging. The world of blogging is fun, take it from me who has been blogging since 2011!

#9 Like taking Challenge?

Running a successful blog that pays your bills is not exactly an easy task – especially if you are building it from scratch. But there are enough resources available which will help you create it without too much of investments.

#10 Be your own boss

There isn’t a bigger high than this – believe me. Being your own boss, taking your decisions, and being in control of your life!

Self-Hosted on Free Blog?

If you want to take blogging seriously and start making money from it, you must go Self Hosted with a .com domain. It’s like having your workspace where you own that domain and can write whatever you want.

Brands would want you to have a self-hosted site than a free Blogger or Wordpress blog. But you want to write just to share your opinion – like a hobby blog – you can start with a free blog. But I would always suggest you to get a self-hosted blog. There are enough options available like Bluehost, Go Daddy etc. Check for offers.

Make your Blog look professional

There are tons of free themes available for Wordpress and Blogger self-hosted blogs on places like Creative Market or ThemeForest. It’s always good to clear professional looking themes for your website. Good looking, eye-soothing UI of your website = easy reading for the audience.

Avoid jarring colors, twisty curly fonts. They are not easy for the eyes!

Get basic plugins and make your blog user friendly.

Basic SEO you must do

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an integral part of organic success of a blog. You might write good posts, but Google needs to know that and once they get to know they will show you in the searches!

Here’s what you should do.

  1. Make your blog search-friendly.
On WordPress site visit Settings » Reading page and uncheck the option “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”
  2. Connect blog to Google Analytics
  3. Get Yoast SEO Plugin
  4. Submit your site on Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster (not sure if anyone uses Bing anyway)
  5.  Use keywords for Blog posts
  6.  Don’t forget internal linking

I will do a detailed post on SEO later. Let me know what you want to know.

How will I get Sponsored Campaigns?

Give your blog a good three months to grow. Create good content and make a Media Kit showcasing your work and stats.

BTW, Do you want me to do a post on Media Kits? Let me know.

Send your updated media kit to PRs and brands.

Add your site to Google Adsense. Once approved, depending on the traffic you are generating you can start making money just on traffic and page views! It’s not that easy as it sounds though!
