As the sun beams and the days get longer, it’s time to embrace the ultimate summer staple: shorts! But hey, we’re not just talking about your basic denim cutoffs. We’re diving into the fun, fashion-forward world of shorts for women and how you can style them for every casual outing with flair and personality.

Types of Shorts for Women

Ready to turn heads and stay cool? Let’s get into it!

The classic denim dream:

Jeans are another classic that remains popular even to this very day, and so are denim shorts for women. They’re good for any casual event, easy to style, and very comfortable for any occasion or event. If you are going out to a picnic or meeting friends for brunch, you can never go wrong with simple denim shorts and a white blouse. You can wear it tucked in if you would like to emphasize your waistline, or wear it with rolled-up sleeves for a casual style. Simply slip into some casual sneakers or sandals and top off the look with a charming crossbody bag.

Floral fantasy:

Floral shorts are one of the best allies when it comes to adding a playful and carefree tone. Floral shorts are suited for a casual garden party or a walk around the town since they radiate both colours and fun. It is best to wear them with a plain, basic black or white T-shirt or a tank top so as not to overshadow the print. Just slip into espadrille wedges or flat sandals to maintain the comfort level without compromising on the style statement. Accessorise with a wide-brimmed hat and a pair of round sunglasses to complement the look while keeping off the sun.

Chic and sporty:

Sporty shorts are perfect for wearing to a casual sports game or even a weekend picnic. Accompany them with a sleek high-waist crop top or an athletic zip-up hoodie. As a final touch, what can be better than putting on fashionable sneakers and an athletic backpack? Finish up your outfit with a playful accessory such as a baseball cap in a bright colour or a great visor, and you will be ready to go and have some fun in the sun!

Luxe linen:

On hotter days when you want to keep cool but also stylish, a pair of linen shorts for women is a great idea. You can choose neutral tones such as beige, white, or cream and pair it with a colourful blouse, perhaps going floral. A floral scarf around your head will be a cute touch to your delicate look.

Teaching Kids the Significance of Raksha Bandhan

by tinabasu August 13, 2024
written by tinabasu

Raksha Bandhan, a cherished festival in India, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It’s a day filled with love, promises, and exchanging Rakhis and gifts. While traditionally associated with the bond between a brother and a sister, the essence of Raksha Bandhan goes far beyond gender, embodying love, protection, and commitment to one another. For parents, it’s a wonderful opportunity to instill these values in their children from an early age. But how do you explain the deeper significance of Raksha Bandhan to kids, especially when you have a single child or two girls?

The History and Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Before diving into how to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, it’s important to help children understand its historical and cultural background. The festival’s name, “Raksha Bandhan,” translates to “the bond of protection.” Traditionally, a sister ties a Rakhi—a sacred thread—around her brother’s wrist, symbolizing her love and prayers for his well-being. In return, the brother promises to protect her throughout his life.

The origins of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to various historical and mythological tales.

It is believed that during the Mahabharata, Draupadi tore a piece of her clothing and tied it to Krishna’s hand while it was bleeding. Impressed with the act of kindness, Krishna promised to protect her whenever she was in danger giving birth to the ritual of Raksha Bandhan.

Can we tie Rakhi to Lord Krishna? - Quora

Another popular story is that of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. Facing the threat of an invasion, Rani Karnavati sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun, seeking his protection. Touched by this gesture, Humayun immediately set out with his troops to defend her. This story emphasizes that Raksha Bandhan is not just about blood relations but about the bond of protection and care that can be shared between anyone.

Teaching the Values of Raksha Bandhan to Kids

For children, especially younger ones, abstract concepts can be difficult to grasp. Here’s how you can break down the significance of Raksha Bandhan for them:

  1. Love and Care: Explain that Raksha Bandhan is a day to celebrate love and care between siblings. It’s about showing appreciation for one another and reinforcing the importance of family ties.
  2. Protection Beyond Physical Safety: The promise of protection doesn’t only mean keeping someone safe physically; it also involves standing by each other, supporting one another in tough times, and being emotionally available.
  3. Respect and Gratitude: Teach your child that Raksha Bandhan is also about respecting each other’s roles in the family. It’s a time to express gratitude for having a sibling who supports and loves them.
  4. Inclusion and Equality: While traditionally a brother-sister festival, Raksha Bandhan today can be celebrated between any two individuals who share a bond of care and protection. This inclusive approach helps teach children about equality and respect for all relationships.

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan with a Single Child

If you have a single child, like me – it can feel like a challenge. My 9-year-old boy is a single child with all his cousin  sisters scattered around the country. But Raksha Bandhan can still be a meaningful and enriching experience even if you have a single child. Here’s how:

  1. Celebrating the Bond with Parents: In the absence of a sibling, the child can celebrate Raksha Bandhan with their parents. A mother or father can tie a Rakhi on their child’s wrist, symbolizing the bond of protection and love. This can also be a beautiful way for parents to remind their child of their unconditional love and support.
  2. Involving Extended Family and Friends: If your child has cousins or close family friends, they can celebrate Raksha Bandhan together. This helps extend the idea of sibling-like bonds beyond immediate family, reinforcing the festival’s underlying values of protection and care.
  3. Fostering Empathy and Responsibility: Use this opportunity to teach your child about empathy and responsibility. Discuss with them how they can protect and care for others in their daily lives, whether it’s standing up for a friend, being kind to someone in need, or simply being a good listener.

For Bluey, his cousin sisters send Rakhis by courier, and he gets excited every time he receives them!

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan with Two Girls

For families with two girls, Raksha Bandhan can be a wonderful way to highlight the mutual responsibility of protection and care between siblings, regardless of gender. Here are some ideas:

  1. Emphasizing Mutual Care: Explain that Raksha Bandhan is not about who is older or stronger but about mutual care and respect. Both sisters can tie Rakhis on each other’s wrists, symbolizing that they will look out for each other.
  2. Creating New Traditions: Encourage your daughters to come up with their own special Raksha Bandhan traditions. Perhaps they can write letters to each other, expressing their love and promises, or create a scrapbook of their favourite memories together.
  3. Learning from Stories: Share stories of famous sisters in history or mythology who supported and protected each other. This can be a powerful way to show that the bond between sisters is just as strong and meaningful as any other sibling relationship.

Encourage your daughters to tie rakhi to each other because, in today’s world, girls are no less, they protect, care and remain BFFs.

Now, sisters too tie each other a rakhi - Times of India

Incorporating Modern Values

While the traditional values of Raksha Bandhan are timeless, it’s also important to adapt the festival to reflect modern-day values. Today’s families are diverse, and Raksha Bandhan should be inclusive, celebrating the bonds that matter most, regardless of gender or family structure.

  • Gender Equality: Teach your children that protection and care are mutual responsibilities. Sisters protect brothers just as brothers protect sisters, and everyone in the family looks out for each other.
  • Expanding the Circle: Encourage your children to think about who else in their lives they can celebrate Raksha Bandhan with. It could be a close friend, a cousin, or even a neighbour they have a strong bond with.
  • Environmental Consciousness: Incorporate eco-friendly practices into your celebrations. Opt for handmade or sustainable Rakhis and avoid plastic packaging. This not only teaches children about the importance of the environment but also adds a personal touch to the festival.

Conclusion

Raksha Bandhan is more than just a ritual; it’s a day to celebrate the values of love, care, protection, and respect within the family. Whether you have a single child, two girls, or a more traditional sibling setup, the essence of the festival remains the same. By teaching your child the significance of Raksha Bandhan and adapting the celebration to your unique family dynamic, you can help them understand and appreciate the deeper meaning of this beautiful festival.

Huts and Looms Saree Review – The Allure of Golden Tissue Saree

by tinabasu August 9, 2024
written by tinabasu

sarees have a special place in my heart. With Durga Puja coming up, I am looking for striking saree designs on the internet every single day! Over time, I have realised I am more inclined towards intricate work, indigenous fabrics and handloom sarees. My browsing led me to this sustainable handloom saree brand and I got super interested in this golden tissue saree. Now that I have worn it, I had to share a Huts and Looms saree review. I’ll tell you exactly what I felt and how I am building up my Durga Puja Look Book.

Why I got a Tissue Saree?

If you have gone through my Instagram you know how much I love sarees, especially the traditional ones. However, during Durga Puja I generally have a lot of work all day round in the pandal and I was looking for something light yet gorgeous and striking.

A tissue saree is characterized by its sheer, almost translucent quality, achieved through a unique weaving technique. This sheerness lends an air of ethereal elegance and is light in nature. Thus I wanted to try a tissue saree this time. Another one I want to try for this Pujo is a light organza! Let’s see.

Huts and Looms Saree Review

Let’s get to the review of the Huts and Looms, Mayura handloom tissue saree.

#1 Colour – The Royal Metallic Gold

The moment I saw this metallic gold tissue saree on their website I was sold with the striking metallic gold hue. It’s not soft, it’s not loud – it is just the right amount of gold when you want to make an appearance!

The moment I draped the golden tissue saree, I felt special! The colour, a liquid gold, seemed to dance and shimmer with every movement. It was like wearing sunshine.

#2 Fabric – Delicate & Soft

The fabric of this Huts and Looms saree was incredibly soft, and the drape was beautiful. The saree managed to be both delicate and bold, a perfect balance of grace and grandeur. I wasn’t expecting it to be this comfortable, honestly!

IMO it’s quite a perfect pick for a long day at the puja with the much-needed glam!

#3  Design – Solid & Border

The fabric and the colour add all the glam to this saree. It is a solid golden tissue saree with a very thin red border. I have paired it here with a golden blouse, but this can be worn with a red or maroon blouse too.

#4 Handwoven Saree

This Huts and Looms saree review post will be incomplete if I don’t mention it is a handwoven tissue saree and not any machine-made saree! Just some days back on World Handloom Day I was speaking about my love for handlooms over machines. And here I am in yet another handloom wonder.

#Price

It is priced at Rs 3650 but is available at Rs. 3285 with the ongoing sale on the site. (You know how we love discounts!)

My Thoughts on The Golden Tissue Saree

I loved how it came in a cloth saree bag, it makes it way easier to store it. I was very impressed with the lightness and the comfort after wearing it.

Tissue is the trending fabric in sarees and I came across tons of reels on tissue sarees and glass tissue sarees!

Tissue sarees have high regard because of the complex procedure and the superior fabric quality. However, if you value the artistry and craftsmanship, investing in a tissue saree is worthwhile.

Styling Tips for Golden Tissue Sarees

If you want to sport a golden tissue saree, remember, it is a statement piece that demands careful styling. Here are a few tips to help you create a stunning look:

  • Minimalist Jewellery: Let the saree be the star of the show. Opt for delicate, understated jewellery like diamond or pearl studs.
  • Contrast Blouse: A black or dark blue blouse can create a striking contrast against the golden saree.
  • Metallic Clutch: A metallic clutch adds a touch of glamour and complements the saree’s sheen.
  • Hairstyle: Keep your hair sleek and polished with a low bun or soft waves.
  • Makeup: Opt for a dewy, natural look with a focus on the eyes.
  • Occasions: Perfect for weddings, receptions, and festive events.
