Bravo Netherlands

by Tina Basu February 22, 2011
written by Tina Basu
I don’t think the English players can sleep in peace tonight. My heart goes out for the entire Dutch team for their brilliance, effort and courage. Who would have ever thought a non-cricket playing country will produce such a brilliant team to put a strong team like England in this pit! I think we should stop calling them minnows and appreciate the valour they are showing.
I couldn’t see them bat in the afternoon and could catch up with the match only at its fag end. But my jaw dropped to see the little corner showing the target 293! Still, the very little that I saw of the match was enough to realise the Dutch came fully prepared for the assault. Not only they batted well their fielding was of high class.
I feel sorry for Ryan ten Doeschate for his best efforts of a massive 119 from 110 balls and his splendid bowling figures weren’t enough to give Netherlands their deserved victory. I would have been happier had the Dutch restricted England in the final overs. After all it was Netherlands who scripted this thrilling match from the word go. I’ll say England is lucky to have averted this humiliation.

I hope Netherlands win against all other teams that they play but not obviously against India. I hope they continue to play like this and keep their hopes shining of becoming a test playing nation in the near future. For me you are winners tonight.

The World Cup Mania

by Tina Basu February 22, 2011
written by Tina Basu
It is raining bats and balls everywhere in the Indian sub continent now. After all it’s THE sacred event of cricket which everyone (all cricket following nations and specially we Indians) waits eagerly for four long years. Apart from the seven official religions followed in secular India perhaps cricket is the eighth religion bringing everyone together. BTW for your info I am also an ardent follower of this faith and bow down to my god SachinJ. This relation of faithfulness started long back during the 1992 World Cup when as a 7 year old I thought Sachin looked cute with his charming smile and a cute mop of hair!
When he had the cutest mop of hair
At this time all FMCG companies are in full swing to share the limelight with this extravaganza coming up with various offers related to World Cup. I can see the newspaper flooded with ads from electronic companies with their offers on television – I saw an offer as crazy as a ‘certain hour LCD TV shopping festival’! Then there are offers on Colas and wafers and on almost everything. My company is also coming up with something similar and I am designing the same right at this moment and scribbling here in between that. I quite liked Pepsi’s ‘helicopter shot’ ad though. I trust all of this is done to make our world cup watching moments better (from the ideological pov and not the sales aspect – which is the only thing FMCG companies can think of).
Change the Game campaign by Pepsi
But I have a very simple question to ask – how do I watch the matches when I am stuck with work and slogging in the office? I love the game of cricket and love watching almost every match for the sheer drama that unfolds within the 22 yards. For this same reason last Saturday we were ready in front of the TV well before the toss, keeping no appointments anywhere. Surprisingly organizers have been kind enough to keep almost all of India’s matches on weekends (otherwise I am sure I would have gone crazy)! But I’ll have to miss a South Africa – West Indies and an Australia –New Zealand match for sureL. I envy all who can bunk office/college for the matchesL.
Being a Bengali and in love with Eden Gardens I felt bad when Kolkata lost hosting the India England match but somewhere I was quite happy that the match is shifted to Bangalore. But where’s the ticket? No good blocks available, and I have to attend a family function which I can’t miss, as can’t see my 6 year old nephew sad who turns 7 on that very same day!
Everyone wants to enjoy and cheer for their team to win. I feel sorry for those who have to sit and study at this time for their exams. During the last few world cups I had to dig my face inside boring books as exams used to happen around this time, though eyes often peeped at the TV. When I was sent to my room for ‘you-should-concentrate-on-your-studies’ time, I remember running to the TV each time there was a four or a six as the whole colony used to burst into claps and cheers. It is so painful at these times to sit with theories and statistics, my sympathy goes to all those who are going through that now.
I came across a very interesting article in yesterday’s newspaper and realized my plight is quite less than these unfortunate people. A number of prisoners of the maximum-security Nabha jail in Patiala, Punjab went on hunger strike for their demand of watching the World Cup. [I am not sure if I should call them unfortunate completely, otherwise they wouldn’t have ended up where they are now. But I consider them unfortunate as in those who can’t catch up with a world cup match.] These prisoners ended their 16 hour long hunger strike only after they were assured that their demand, of providing cable connection, would be taken up. Don’t know how much that would be done. You can read the full article here. But these poor fellows only want to watch the game and cheer for India (hopefully). This gives me one more thought. Crime rates should go down on the days India is playing. Hopefully all crime monsters will be busy watching the match than robbing someone else, but yes bookies will up on toes for sure.
Go and get my cable connection for World Cup

Anyways I am eagerly waiting for all the matches to come and keeping my fingers crossed to bring home the celebrated cup. And of course praying for Sachin!

We so want this

A simple evening in my simple life

by Tina Basu February 21, 2011
written by Tina Basu
We keep writing about the exciting things that we experience around us. Today somehow I thought of writing down how I spent my evening with nothing special happening but feeling quite content.
While walking down the lanes to my home I was over the phone speaking to my mom who always reminds me now that I am married my responsibilities have grown, I should take care of myself, the house and of course my husband. But frankly, I do pamper him quite a lot. Anyways after a 10 minutes session with mom I thought I should pick up something from the local supermarket for him.
On my way back I came across the usual sight of kids playing on the road, people running with their dogs, and ladies walking up and down the inclined road to keep themselves fit.  Met our landlord after a long time as he paid a brief visit to collect his letters which mistakenly were dropped in our mailbox.
This evening Bangalore welcomed the first showers of the year. Loved watching the green patch in front of the apartment getting bathed with the first showers. These days I am quite inspired by recipes collected from my family or the internet. So thought of trying out a new chicken recipe. However, I am never content with one item so I spent some time in cooking up a nice bong spread which included both fish and chicken. Occasionally caught some glimpses of the Australia and Zimbabwe match in between chopping and mixing.
In spite of all the cooking and other little works here and there, I finished of everything by 9 and caught up on some me time before the dinner. (We eat late, sleep late and wake up late – I know bad habit but can’t help that somehow). So the me time got divided in catching up with family over phone, latest episode of a dance reality show, surfing, blogging etc. That’s when I got this thought – even a simple evening can make you quite content.

Its all about a Smile

by Tina Basu February 21, 2011
written by Tina Basu
While doing some random internet searches I came across many interesting facts on a simple thing called smile. Here I have clubbed some of those to share with you. I do give credit to the various health related online portals for enlightening me a little.

5 Reasons to Smile to keep yourself Healthy
1.      Keep smiling to boost your immune system
When we smile the body’s immune function improves as you are more relaxed. This prevents common colds and flu. So keep smiling!
2.      Keep smiling to relieve stress
Smiling prevents us from looking tired and worn down. Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine, dopamine and growth hormone but increases the level of health enhancing hormones like endorphins and neurotransmitters. Smile and laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T-cells.  So when you feel stressed try flashing your beautiful smile!
3.      Keep smiling to lower your Blood Pressure
Smile helps in reducing your blood pressure. It relieves physical tension and stress leaving your muscles relaxed. So all you victims of High Blood Pressure try smiling more!
4.      Keep smiling for your natural pain-killers
Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three are our feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.  Thus smiling is your natural drug.
5.      Keep smiling to keep your heart healthy
Smile and laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. A little laugh will benefit you.
See, even if life gets complicated a little thing is sufficient to bring you out of that. Try smiling to your regular grocery guy, or the ticket collector, or the security guard in your office, you will not only make them a little surprised but also help your health. And who knows we may be able to bring a smile on some one’s face who might have never seen the happier side of life. Flash your beautiful smiles!

SMILE
A little thing that brings happiness is a smile
A beam of your sunshine you can spread across miles.
Even in a tiresome dull gloomy day
Smile is the only thing you keep as you give it way
Smile, a language of love warmth and strength
The only curve which sets everything straight
To everyone smile is a gift worth giving
Because smile is a gift which costs nothing!

Magical waters of Maldives - A honeymoon in Maldives

The Magical Waters of Maldives: Honeymoon in Maldives

by Tina Basu February 19, 2011
written by Tina Basu

The Maldives, with its crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches, is a popular destination for honeymoon and leisure travel. Lying to the south-west of Sri Lanka and India, this island country knows how to captivate you with its beautiful blue lagoons.

magical waters of maldives

The Maldives is one of the most beautiful island nations you can visit for a holiday. It is the smallest Asian Country with a population of only 427,756 inhabitants. The chain of 26 atolls surely knows how to mesmerize you with its sunny beaches, white sands, and picturesque blue lagoons.

After a fortnight-long wedding celebration back in Kolkata it was time for the newlywed couple to spend some time together after the wedding hangover! The concept of honeymoon these days have become so commercialized that not traveling to an exotic place brings a big question mark on a lot of people’s faces. Being a movie enthusiast I too had always visualized of a dreamlike honeymoon. But after months of research over the internet (pre-wedding) we had zeroed down on the Maldives to be the ideal exotic location for our honeymoon.

Best Time to Visit Maldives

December to April, which is their summer, is the peak tourist season in Maldives. It is most expensive at this time. It’s warm, sunny and has clear skies during their summer months with almost no rain – perfect for tourists.

May to August is their monsoons and you can expect heavy rains in these months. But you can manage some great deals on hotel bookings during this off-season.

Reaching Maldives

Maldives is a popular destination now and you have direct flights to capital island Male from Bangalore, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Air India is the only airline which has direct flights to Male from India.

Visa for Indian Passport Holders and Immigration

Maldives is one of the countries that provides Visa on Arrival for Indian Passport Holders. A 30-day free Tourist Visa is issued for all nationalities provided you possess:

  1. Passport with Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)
  2. Should have at least 6 months validity
  3. Valid return air-ticket
  4. Enough funds to cover the expenses for duration of the stay in Maldives. (US$100 + $50 dollars per day) or a confirmation of reservation in a Tourist Resort or a Hotel

The immigration process is quite fast since there are multiple counters at the airport. We got our visa on arrival and immigration done under 10 mins.

Magical waters of Maldives - A honeymoon in Maldives

This was the first time I was visiting a country which was scattered in numerous islands. The first sight of the tiny islands was thrilling. The bright turquoise blue lagoon surrounding each tiny little island looked like paintings.

Male International Airport

As the flight landed it felt as if we landed in the middle of the sea. It’s probably the cutest airport I have ever seen with a runway and a little building with blue waters on both the sides. I had read the runway was made by joining two islands artificially! Kudos to the engineers for making this possible.

Airport Transfer from Male International Airport

Being an island country made up of 1,190 coral islands the common mode of transfer is either a speedboat or a seaplane. Male airport hosts the biggest sea-plane operation in the world. The sea-plane terminal in just next to the airport.

Things to Remember: The Sea Plane service works only during daylight hours. If you are arriving at Male International Airport in the evening you might have to stay there overnight.

The island that we were to stay on wasn’t too far away from Male and we hopped in on a speedboat. Thus my first love affair with the mystic waters of Maldives started while whizzing past numerous islands towards our resort island in the speedboat. Trailing white surf behind the speedboat looked picture perfect.

Staying in Maldives: Best Resort Islands

In The Maldives, if you are staying at an island resort, then expect that entire island to be your resort. These islands are not more than 2-3 km in total length. All island resorts are equipped with bars, restaurants, nightlife water sports and many more. Maldives is a safe travel destination, travelling solo to Maldives is a great idea too. You can take day tours to nearby fishing villages or uninhabited islands or a city tour of Male capital city from your resort island.

Don’t Forget: Most of the island resorts have water bunglows or water villas and staying in them is an experience. Don’t miss that. They are priced a little higher than usual rooms or beach facing bunglows.

The Maldives offers you resorts of all kinds. You can choose from ultra-luxurious stays in water villas with private pools to budget hotels. Some of the popular resort islands are Paradise Island, Bandos Island, Dhigura island, Chaaya Island, Kurumba Maldives, Reethi Beach Resort, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and many more. In general Maldives is an expensive place and tourism is their main industry. But you can visit the Maldives on a budget as well. All transactions are carried out in US Dollars. It is better to get a deal with full boarding. But carry enough cash for water sports, city tours, airport transfers etc.

Our Stay: Chaaya Island Dhonvelli

We were staying at an island called Chaya Island Dhonvelli. When we reached our resort, the walk up to our water suite felt like a movie. Walking through the white sand, perfectly maintained greenery, cool shade of the trees across the lagoon, we reached our water bunglow.

While doing my initial research the idea of staying on water seemed romantic. However, when we saw it, it was much more than that. A long brown jetty laid across the cool blue water on a bright sunny day had put us in a romantic mood instantly.

The Water Bunglow

From dipping feet in the lagoon from your private sun deck to walking through the corals reminded me of the various secrets or nature. I cannot forget the schools of colorful fishes that we saw swimming right under our suite. You can spot numerous breeds and their amazing colors are a true feast for the eyes.

Catching a sunrise, soaking yourself in the water, occasionally spotting a baby shark swimming along with you made me fall in love with the place.

We were in for a treat from the start. Exotic buffets, live barbeques, a drink under the stars with an occasional flickering of the candle you are surprised with great hospitality every time.

Things to do in Maldives

Apart from relaxing and enjoying a leisure holiday don’t forget to enjoy some great water sports. Most island resorts have their own water sport facilities. Go snorkelling or scuba diving. Take a trip to the fishing villages or go island hopping.

You can see the deep oceans from submarines or catch the glowing beaches at night with Bioluminescent Plankton.

Watching the endless turquoise waters blending into a similar bright sky seemed spellbinding. Maybe there’s some magic in the waters which relax you, or maybe it’s the brightness which brings a smile on your face.

Magical waters of Maldives

We were happy to have chosen this tiny island country as the destination for our honeymoon, otherwise we would have never known this magic that nature offers us. Very rightly the Tourism department of the country has kept the name ‘Maldives – The Sunny Side of Life’ and that’s the source of inspiration for the name of my blog too with a perfect picture from the island! [TinaBasu.com was previously The Sunny Side of Life – twinklingtinawrites.blogspot.com]

This post of mine is also my entry for the Cleartrip My purpose contest on Indiblogger. And if I happen to win the contest (fingers crossed) then some more tryst with nature is on the cards!

Update: I did win a Bonus prize – Cleartrip Voucher worth 5K INR for this post.

My brother My Hero

by Tina Basu February 17, 2011
written by Tina Basu
The following is an acrostic poem – where the first letter of each line spells out a word (downwards). I had written this for a contest in Fanstory but latter found out that contest is for paid members :(. Being an ardent follower of my hero I couldn’t stop myself from posting it here in my blog.
**********************************************************

Shining like the brightest star in the galaxy
Are you human, a mortal soul, or an incarnation of a deity?
Climbing up the highest peaks of records seems a cakewalk for you
Helping the team to come out of disasters too.
India is proud to produce a son like you
Never has anyone seen a master of stroke player like you.
Tormenting the bowlers is your passion
Enchanting is the word for your masterpiece action.
No one can ever touch your grandeur
Don’t know how you still maintain your run’s hunger!
Ultimate Cricket Hero is what I call you
Lil Master, I am lucky to born in the same time to watch you.
Kolkata to Canada you are shining bright,
Admirations, adulations and praises are all I can write.
Reminding everyone, my brother Sachin will always be my pride.
