Are you ‘Kolaveri’-fied or going Ooh La La??

by Tina Basu November 29, 2011
written by Tina Basu

If you are active in any of the social media sites and listen to radio/ watch music channels on TV you cannot possibly miss the national craze among Indians now. If you have not heard any of these already… you must be in some other planet. The nation is going crazy behind two songs – ‘Why this Kolaveri di’ and Ooh Laa Laa.

For quite some time I have been getting these status messages on my FB page which spelt weird. I wondered suddenly why everyone is adding this generous amount of ‘U’s after every word in their sentences.  And then someone posted the you-tube video of this man in moustache singing in a studio. I had ignored it first but then had to see when I realized almost everyone is going crazy over it.

You should also listen to it or else you will not understand the essence of this madness. Check the video here.

Let me admit I never knew who Dhanush is nor do I understand Tamil or have any clue about Tollywood of South, apart from the Great Rajinikanth. [I call it Tollywood of South because the Bengali Film Industry in Kolkata is also called Tollywood]. Anyways once I listened to the track I didn’t understand what was so great in it that everyone is going crazy about it. May be to understand it better I listened to it again, but I didn’t find anything great to go gaga about it. However, the same evening when I was in the kitchen I found myself humming the same tune!! I found myself humming it almost all the time, which was even a bigger surprise!! The song absolutely doesn’t have anything – the lyrics don’t make sense, much slower than a usual Tamil song, the tune is simple. Still I am humming it now and then in spite of not liking it – that’s weird but that’s exactly how it is. You cannot escape the ‘Kolaveri’ experience.

Or again you may say, when you have the Rajinikanth connection then all you get is a massive, gigantic, colossal, super duper (and can add all the superlative adjectives) hit/ success. [For those who don’t know as yet – Dhanush is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law].

This song is supposedly for a movie called ‘3’ but even before the completion of the film this song has become a rage, you will see this song playing in every other music channel. And I couldn’t believe my ears at work today when I heard few people have already set it as their ringtone!!
The second one is the funny and retro Ooh Laa Laa from the movie ‘The Dirty Picture’. I am not bothered how dirty it is… or if any one feels its cheap… it is just too good, and I have been listening to it in loop for I don’t know how many times a day. It plays in my i-pod, in my phone, I keep shuffling between MTV, [V], 9XM, E24, Zoom, UTV Stars and all the music channels possible so that I can get its glimpse.

Is it the oomph of Vidya Balan that makes the song/video so famous, or is it the music? I feel music, lyrics, and Bappi Lahiri has made this song unforgettable. I am sure it will become a cult song, like Munni, very soon if not already. Check out the video here.

Music director duo Vishal-Shekhar with Bappi Lahiri has brought back the very retro and very filmy flavor of the 70s and 80s and somehow I feel Bappi da’s voice makes all the difference in this song. And Mr. Rajat Arora please tell me where you get these lyrics from – ‘Ladki tu hai badi Boombard’ , ‘Tu hai meri fantasy’, its sounds so like some roadside romeo song but it’s still so embarrassingly addictive. If I have to watch this movie I will probably watch it for this song alone. It so reminds me of my days in the PG with the girls where we used to dance to our hearts content (in whichever way we wanted) to all sorts of item songs. How often can you imagine a bare chested Naseeruddin Shah dancing to such a song?

I don’t know when was the last time everyone whom I know were only talking about some particular song. I wonder if they play this Kolaveri song in the parliament sessions, it absolutely suits them. Anyways in this race I am definitely going Ooh La La than being ‘Kolaveri’-fied. What are you?

I am sure after this song’s success there will be more gold added
in Bappi da’s collection 🙂

Just a little more time would have created magic!

by Tina Basu November 23, 2011
written by Tina Basu

The little girl born on a cold November evening was blessed, she was blessed by the almighty with creativity and an artistic persona. As she grew up she flourished in classical dance, in drawing and painting, in writing poetry. She always spoke to the almighty and thanked him for his blessings and also asked for help whenever needed. But the little girl and her passions changed as she grew up and got caught between responsibilities.

When the little girl was four year old she once spoke to God,

“God, today I danced like always but it seemed little different, there were so many colorful lights and music but I couldn’t see anything else, there was only darkness… but I quite liked dancing today as I got to wear very nice colorful clothes and some paint on my lips… mom said It was lipstick and it was for elders… today was special so she gave me… after my dance I was playing with my friend in a dark place when mom said people were calling me… I ran to the lady who was calling me and I saw suddenly there were so many people around… I didn’t understand what happened and from where they came and why they were clapping all of a sudden… the lady handed me a big gift… and I ran to mom and gave her the gift… I don’t know what had happened but I am happy because everyone seems happy around me and my dad clicked so many pictures of mine in the beautiful dress…”

Dear, today is indeed a special day, you didn’t realize but this evening you gave your first dance performance on stage and got the first prize in the competition. There were hundreds of people hiding in that darkness who saw your little feet create wonders. You have made your parents proud in front of so many people. Wish you good luck for many such performances.

When the little girl was twelve year old she spoke to God for help,

“God I gave my second year dance examination and I am little scared. I think it went well and I have given my best shot, but I don’t know why I am feeling jittery now that the exam is over?”

My dear you are getting nervous about the result that will come out next week. You are worried about the feelings of your parents. But believe in yourself, if you have given your best then you don’t need to worry about anything. Good Luck my child.

After a week when the results were out the little girl had secured the first place in the classical dance examination with a huge score of 96 out of 100. And she thanked god for what He had given her.

When the little girl was seventeen year old she once thanked God,

“God I am very happy today. My aunt had taken one of my paintings sometime back and had said that she would put it up in her drawing room. She had called mom in the afternoon to tell her one of her guests asked the other day which artist’s painting was that and enquired if she could get something for her home too… Mom was very happy too… Mom told me how proud she felt each time people asked about my oil paintings that adorn our living room. I am happy that I could make my parents happy, I am happy that I could create something nice. Thank you God for everything… I seek your blessings…”

My Dear, I have not given you anything special, it’s your hard work and knowledge that is fetching you the compliments. I hope you always keep these close to your heart, in future when you will have more responsibilities, don’t just forget these easily.

When the little girl was twenty two year old she once asked God for some sunshine,

“Dear God, life has become too fast, why is everyone running behind time? I feel like I have also joined that rat race… What am I doing… spending time from morning to evening in college so far from home, studying for exams, even the one month holiday I get I have to run behind people for internships, thesis… how do I do anything else? Where is the time to do anything? I only managed to dance twice in college in the last two years! Why am I not being able to find out some time for myself, for what I like? On Sundays I am either cleaning my room or clothes or shopping for groceries… What do I do God? Give me some sunshine…”

My Dear, this is what life is, everything doesn’t stay the same always. I know it’s difficult for you to allot time for all your interests but this is how it is… the time is limited… you need to make the right decision, whether you want to follow your heart which wants you to bring color in life or your mind who wants you to have a secure future… The decision is yours.

The little girl grew up to be a fine lady passing her academics with flying colors and joined work. Today she is married with a lovely home and family… but her identity is at stake… she is busy with a grueling schedule at work and at home to keep everything running… she doesn’t put her ‘ghungroo’ on her feet nor does she brighten any canvas… occasionally she pens down some couplets or scribbles in her diary…

The little girl (is always the little girl for her God) asked a favor from God

Dear god, I have followed my brain and not my heart. I know you will ask why? But tell me God why can’t I have both? Why do I need to choose only one? Today I don’t have any time for myself, my passions… There are so many people now who don’t even know that I have been a performer and an artiste, forget about others my husband also doesn’t know because he has never seen me doing anything… I don’t even get to spend a good quality time with him because of our respective jobs, because of my duties and responsibilities at home… why does it have to happen like this? At times I think of going and buying some paintings for my living room… such an irony… I myself don’t get time to make a painting for myself?? If only I had some more time… two more hours in the day may be I could have done at least one of these…

I could come back from work early, spend some time with the things that I love to do and then spend some quality time with him. If I am not getting to do any of these now what will I do when I have a family? Do I always need to keep running? I am just asking a favor… or a request…”

She is still waiting for the answer… this time her Dear God… is taking unusually long in replying to her questions….

PS: The above post is written for the Indibloger Contest  ” If you had two extra hours in a day, how would you spend it” sponsored by Surf Excel Matic #GetSmart. Hope you enjoyed reading it 🙂 Will tell you more about the Little Girl latter…

Why all the hoo-haa about Aishwarya’s pregnancy??

by Tina Basu November 3, 2011
written by Tina Basu

For the last few days news papers and channels are flooded with stories on when Aishwarya’s going to deliver her first child, which doctor she is consulting, and which hospital they have zeroed in on!!! Are we all sitting jobless to follow her pregnancy routine and how many times she is going to the hospital and at which hour?

I am not a big Aishwara Rai Bachchan follower nor do I dislike her. But I am feeling sorry for her thinking how she is denied the right to enjoy her pregnancy and is under constant vigil by the media. From all that I read in a paper yesterday I feel the media is very unhappy on why Aishwarya is wearing voluminous salwars and not showing off her baby bump? But why? What on earth will the reporters get if she posed for the shutterbugs showing off her bump? I don’t understand this. Would they start speculating from the bump whether it’s going to be Master Bachchan or Miss. Bachchan? Or would they be able to tell how is the baby going to look – like mom or dad? What is the big deal if she doesn’t want to be like Jolie or JLO?
I remember few years back when Suzzanne Roshan (Hrithik Roshan’s wife) was expecting and she was seen at some award function with her bump these reporters started writing “from the size of her bump its confirmed she is expecting twins”!! Can you imagine that? Heights of speculation. And these days I doubt if Newspaper organizations at all hire any editors, if you see online editions of different news dailies you will agree with me.
Coming back to yesterdays articles I found they have infact started all speculations with the date of the delivery. They even went on to say 11 th is a special date because Sr. Bachchan’s birthday falls on the same date!!!
Is it worth trying to get every glimpse of a movie star?
Please reporters (who don’t seem to find out any other news and is chasing the lady for any picture) get a life. Leave her alone, I think she deserves some privacy from your prying eyes. Let her enjoy this stage without having to think all the time about the paparazzi. I don’t know why I am writing as if she is a close friend of mine but I am somehow irritated that these guys want to know everything, from doctor to suit number, to the menu and dress code for her baby shower!

TEN DAY YOU CHALLENGE POST 10: 1 PIC

by Tina Basu October 1, 2011
written by Tina Basu

Finally arrive at the last post of my 10 day challenge. I am too happy that I didn’t miss posting a single day. Today is posting my pic.

I don’t know how to just choose one pic which is my favourite… I have loads of them. But will pick an old one I guess.

I specially like this picture because its taken in my most favourite country Switzerland… on the way up to Jungfraujoch. We were too excited to go up to the top of Europe as its popularly known – but isn’t actually.
We stopped at the end of the tunnel for some clicks and I was happy posing… [ the train was heated outside it was freezing… :)]

TEN DAY YOU CHALLENGE POST 9: TWO SONGS

by Tina Basu September 30, 2011
written by Tina Basu

This is really difficult. I don’t know how to choose only two songs. Well I like listening to a lot of pop songs as well as soft numbers. I enjoy Bollywood music too at times. Actually it depends all on the mood. Some times I like to go crazy with typical ‘masala’ songs like Munni Badnam, Charecter Dheela, Madhubala (from Mere Brother ki Dulhan – can u believe that!!!). I am a huge fan of lady Gaga & MJ. I think I can never miss any song from the. Well not that I should keep both of them in the same place coz MJ goes high up at the apex as a musician and a performer. From Bollywood or Indian songs I enjoy almost everything by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle,  Kishore Kumar, RD Burman & now AR Rehman (selected songs). Anyways lets see what I feel are my favorite.

1. Hero – I have a lot of teenage emotions attached with this song. I was in school when this music video had released. I felt and still feel this song is too good. I like Enrique quite a lot. I don’t know where he was lost for sometime but now thankfully he is back with great music. I specially like the lyrics of this song.

2. Thriller – This is a very biased pick. There are so many songs of Michael Jackson that I should pick but I simply love this song and the atmosphere that is created with the effects. Its the aura of the song which probably made Michael the King of pop. Apart from this the next best (for me) from MJ is I guess They Dont Really Care About Us. I specially like the part when you have the mind blowing electric guitar 🙂
There are loads of Bengali songs too which I love. I have to mention some otherwise this will be incomplete. ‘Bistirno Dupare‘ by Bhipen Hazarakia is an all time favourite with him ever since i had danced on it sometime in school. I specially enjoy a lot of Bengali Folk songs which are evergreen and will always remain close to me. Almost all Bengalis love giving ‘adda‘ singing a song or two. 🙂
I am very glad so many people mad such great music. Its the best stress reliever I know apart from sleeping! I am also thankful for the invention of ipod because it really helps me keeping my cool when I am almost about to burst. I like to just keep to me in those times and listen to some peaceful music to bring peace inside my globe on top! 🙂 I wish I knew to play guitar, I so want to… play a guitar or keyboard which I used to as a kid.

TEN DAY YOU CHALLENGE POST 8: THREE FILMS

by Tina Basu September 29, 2011
written by Tina Basu

This should be interesting. I absolutely love watching movies. I specially like horror, action and science fiction in the same order of preference. It’s very difficult to choose just three favourite movies, there are so many movies that I like and can watch again and again. So I have decided to pick movies with which I have certain memories attached to. They might not be like the Super hit Blockbusters of usual choice but they are very dear to me.

      1.       The Return of Oz – I don’t know how many people have heard
of this. Everyone I guess have heard/seen The Wizard of Oz  – the 1939 MGM movie. The Return of Oz is not a sequel to the MGM movie.
This was an attempt by Walt Disney to create the magic of Oz in color in 1985. This movie shares a special relation with me. When I was a kid there were only two channels in t he TV – DD National & DD Metro
that too DD Metro used to come for few hours of the day. Apart from that people in my house used to rent video tapes from the nearby video library and watched movies almost every weekend, and my aunts and mom even in the afternoon. My dad had bought few cassettes too along with our VCR. It all sounds pre historic but I was three or four from
when I can remember these stuffs. Once of those video cassettes was
The Return of Oz bought for all the kids to enjoy. I was too young probably to know by its name I always remembered it as the ‘daini buri’ (old witch) film. I used to be amazed with these characters of Tik Tok, Jack the Pumpkin Head, Scarecrow, Tin Man for a long time in my childhood. I used to feel they were real and curse that Mombi
(the witch) and I also planned if I was ever in Dorothy’s place what all I will do to escape the witch [ for a long time I believed all these to be real]. I don’t know how many times I have watched this movie. But the cassette is no longer there, it got lost somewhere, and I didn’t even know the actual name of the movie so that I could search for a CD. I only remembered OZ and every one directed me to the 1939 film. Anyways its very recently that I finally found out about the movie and downloaded it J. CD/DVD was not available anywhere. I would have bought spending some bucks coz its very dear to me. And again when I saw I remembered my innocent wishes, imaginations I think I can still watch it. J

     2.       Kaho Na Pyaar Hai –  Okay this is a very biased choice. The film might look silly to people but I have yet again some good memories attached to it. I was in 6th or 7th standard when this movie released. But the affection towards the movie goes back to the first ever promo of this movie that was released in Oct-Nov 1999. There was this scene in the promo where an unshaved Hrithik is running with Ameesha on a beach. I was sitting with a cousin and watching some music program when this promo had come and instantly he started saying ‘every one becomes a hero these days, this guy will not work’. Somehow I felt this unshaved rugged looking boy has very handsome features and I think he looks yummy J. Then after sometime  I had seen this promo where a perfectly dressed Hrithik (Raj – the second character) walks away a flying ‘dupatta’ in hand. The super handsome face and bright eyes behind the spects had already bowled me over. And I knew before its release this one movie will be great if not for story/music/screenplay but then definitely for this awesome looking new actor and I am definitely watching it. J And my 6th standard prediction was quite correct as it turned out to be the new craze of the millennium. I did watch this movie and loved every bit of it. Even if someone says it’s a silly Bollywood masala movie, I still love it. And you will never believe how many times I have seen this movie – its more than 100 and I have stopped counting!!! I finally got a DVD and keep watching it time to time. These days when it comes in TV I try to watch it but I hate the long breaks. When I saw it first I thought everything was beautiful and perfect in the movie, but yes mostly I have seen this movie for the one & only HrithikJ.

These two movies are sitting on top of my list and will top any day because of the special memories and emotions attached to it. Apart from this no other movie is so dear to me. But for the third one my criteria is little different. I like horror movies, specially to watch them at night with lights off. I like the ambience. I do not believe in or am scared of ghosts so I like it quite a lot. We used to do these stuffs a lot in PG and few of my friends were quite scared at the end of back to back horror movies. But I have to say I have not seen any horror movie till date which has scared me – I have d them in theatre and DVD. I somehow find them funny at times. I have watched most of them – Echo, Grudge, 6th Sense, Shutter, Friday the 13th, Dracula, Exorcist, Scream, Dawn of the Dead, Orphan etc etc… but I didn’t feel a chill in the spine by anyone of those. My friends told Pranormal Activity was great and I felt it was too boring and stupid.

3.  There is this one movie which I thought was really good. So it’s the best horror movie I have seen so far. It’s Hostel. It has nothing to do with ghosts, spirits etc. But the story and cinematography was amazing. I don’t think this 2005 movie by Eli Roth was any hit, but I am telling you its raw, creepy, gory, bloody, grotesque and bizarre. There are some torture scenes which are really ugly yet really good. [in the sense how it should be in a horror film] If you can in take some amount of gory bloody scenes, it’s a must watch. Hostel 2 was also great but by that time you start expecting something. I have read lots of negative reviews about this movie on the bizarre torture scenes, nudity, blood etc but if you cannot watch that then why watch a horror movie? But I frankly think it’s a great watch.

Well I don’t know if I did proper justice by choosing only three films. I have loved so many films over the time from Roman Holiday to Veer Zara. I like films of all genres mostly. I had film studies as one of my pass papers during my graduation. There are few films (age old/black & white and few banned documentaries) which I have seen and still remember feeling great that I got to see them. If any one of you like world cinema you can watch Bicycle Thieves (Italian), Close up (Iranian), Kandahar (done In Persian & English both). UTV World Movies is a very good channel to catch up some good cinema.
P.S. – If you can suggest me some great horror movies which I don’t know/am not aware of it will be great. I really want to see some good horror/action movies. I be glad if you people suggest me some. Thanks in advance J.
Well I don’t think the formatting problem has been fixed as yet. Things are still looking weird.
