The Chronicles of a Blogger’s Block

by Tina Basu July 10, 2014
written by Tina Basu

What can be a better prompt than “Blogger’s Block”, Write Tribe – you so know the bloggers and their laziness. Not that all bloggers are lazy but there are some sloth like writes – read ME, who go into their hibernation often. I have been blogging in The Sunny Side of Lifefor 4 years now and I have only 201 posts (as of now) and I know bloggers who have more than that number in few months!! And for my cook blog Twinkling Tina Cooks 56 posts from 2011. So you know how this block bug hits me at times.

I really can’t tell if it’s a block in thought or lack of idea that gets you into this zone but there is also this lack of free time, or the peace of mind to write, that crop in. I get into these zones too often. I’ll be doing some marathon posts and then get exhausted (of ideas and energy both) and then go into a long slumber, then watch my blog’s rank nose dive and then again get back. Really, when did Blogging become such a mammoth task for me, I have no idea.

I started my blogs with the idea that I’ll share my thoughts and in that path I also discovered a fiction writer in me. I started this as a random blog with various kinds of topics but now I write more on Book Reviews, sports, and many forms of fiction. So there are many things to write on, still sometimes you don’t know what to write, you lose your thoughts and skip writing that day and it continues, and you find yourself in the slumber.

But you know it’s not very hard to keep this Blogger’s Block at bay. I’ll give you few tips [that I am following currently] to get back in the race every time [after each slumber]

1. Whenever you are on your laptop/pc and you are surfing keep a word doc open.
This really helps. When you are reading news sites, film sites, blogging sites you react to a lot of things that you read. I react to a lot of nonsense news where I might have a different opinion, or even react to a lot of comments that you see under the news articles. Before you have any other thought clouding your mind you can have some one-liner thoughts written in the word doc. I will suggest [that’s what I do, mostly] write then and there rather than keeping it for later. I tend to forget what I had thought few hours back and my writing happens best when I react immediately to something. It’s like a trigger that gives you thoughts/ideas in mind.

    2. Look for Tag Posts
Tag Posts are a good way of shooing away this blogger’s block. It so happens that I search for them sometimes on Tumbler or on friend’s blogs. You don’t need to wait for someone to tag you. If you find an interesting post you can tag yourself in it. For most of the tag posts you need to copy the questions and answer them. Sometimes they are really interesting and are good way of generating content and coming back to writing. I remember doing a 10 Day Tag post & some make-up andfashion tag post earlier.
    3. Prompts will always help you
If you are like me, a lazy bum blogger, then prompts are your best friends. Look for sites which give these weekly prompts. Like I mentioned earlier they work as a trigger, for me. I instantly start thinking and visualizing and story is formed on its own. You can subscribe to these blogs or websites which gives prompts. But see if you are getting daily prompts on random things you are not likely to write on them. So look for blogs/sites which has this blog party/blog hop stuff and where you need to write in your niche subject. Now since I am writing a lot of fiction/ shortfiction/ 55 Fiction I look for sites which gives weekly prompts and you get good amount of readers as well. In case you also like and write fiction, I have a list of blogs that you could visit, it might help you.
    4. Did you read a book or watched a movie recently?
And liked that book, or didn’t have a good experience. Write about it. Book review/movie review helps to jump back anytime. You might not be getting time or idea to blog, but most of us – who love books – are always reading. Sometimes I can’t sleep without reading few pages. Review that book, may be tag the author in your review.
In case, you are doing a movie review of recent movies, you will see you will get a lot of traffic, as well. It happened to me while reviewed Students of the Year, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and some more. And you don’t need to think that you have to give a good review or a negative review. Express what you felt, your readers will like honesty, there are enough paid reviews, anyways.

Look at the hits on the movie reviews – more than any other post. Well the Hrithik Roshan posts are an exception

   5. Blogging Challenge
You can take part in blogging challenges. It will make sure you are writing something in your blog. Now it can be tricky as well, when you are choosing a month long challenge or something – you got to write and push that block for the entire month. You may choose the smaller challenge – a month long blog party or something.
  6.   Collaborate with fellow bloggers
Now I have not done this so far, but can do any day. It’s like idea in my arsenal! If you have a blogger friend then have a pact with him/her to decide on a theme or experience and both of you can write on the same topic. Like I go out with my girl friends on some day and both of us can blog of the experience – what we shopped, what we ate etc etc.
   7.  Make a Haul Post
If you like books and clothes and shoes and make-up you will probably understand what I mean. When I go to crosswords I go crazy. I tend to pick up 6-7 books easily. You can always make a haul post telling which books you got. And if you like shopping you can make endless haul posts. I necessarily don’t put up all sorts of haul post in The Sunny Side of Life, but I am a complete shopaholic and if I want to do haul posts my blog will have enough content!!
     8. Do an Interview or Guest Post
Now this also I have not done so far, but wish to do some soon. You can take interviews of authors, fellow bloggers and put up that in your blog. I know of a blogger who has a blog only for blog interviews of fellow bloggers, and I was interviewed too, you can read it here.
You can have guest posts in your blog. You can ask a friend/ fellow blogger to write something for you.
Now, all of these above can help you in getting the clogged mind wake up and sit straight. The only push you have to give is get your fingers to the keyboard and for that my Tip no. 1 will help you.
These are my ways of keeping the blogger’s block at bay, whenever I am at a loss with the question what to write? Now that I have written so much on the Blogger’s Block I think I’ll have to refer to it whenever I get one. I hope I don’t get that anytime soon.
So what are your tips on the Blogger’s Block? Let me know.

Fifa World Cup – The German Invasion

by Tina Basu July 10, 2014
written by Tina Basu

I started writing this post yesterday but couldn’t finish, so I am adding two posts together

If you were awake last night you witnessed the greatness of a sporting nation and the helplessness of another, and if you slept through thinking you’ll watch the highlights then you have missed one of the finest semi match ever. It was one night that Brazil and Brazil fans want to erase from history. Let me tell you, before you start judging me, I am a Brazil fan too. If you have been following my Fifa WC posts then you will know I am was supporting three teams this time – Brazil, Argentina & Germany in the same order of preference – till Argentina started playing poorly. So now the order of preference has changed into Germany, Brazil & Argentina.

So last night I was all for Germany – Deutschland Fussball and they were in all their glory. I somehow had a feeling it will be a great match [not necessarily an one sided match] so I didn’t sleep at all and waited it out till 1:30 AM [IST]. Blogging, chatting, TV, Movie helped me in that time, while hubby was taking a power nap. But with the first goal Germans made sure no one had any sleepy thoughts or yawned or even batted eye lashes.

Neymar Jr. was surely missed on field, and thanks to Luis and Cesar for holding up the no. 10 Neymar jersey during the national anthem and photo op. But he was present in the fans heart and chants.

But it was a sheer bad day for Brazil and an awesome day for the Germans. I loved it when the commentator said “if your name starts with a K you could score a goal tonight” after three goals by Klose, Kroos & Khedira. If I was Kina I would have tried my luck as well!!!

It was difficult, at one point, to figure out if the goals were replays or happening at real time!! How many times have you seen so many goals in a word cup semi?? At one point the goals looked effortless and Germans looked like playing in a practice match where they just had to score goals!!! I wonder what they had eaten before the match!

On the other hand Julio Cesar probably didn’t get much to eat or something was really wrong with him. Actually something was wrong with the entire squad – defense absent, forwards lacking – probably they didn’t want to play that night. Poor Mr. Scolari – I felt he wanted to run away. A big setback for such a great football playing nation. But in this whole mayhem of Brazil’s poor show [rather no show] people are not giving enough credit to Germany. They played well, all departments stuck together and probably they didn’t leave any chances to take a shot. So please people give them due credit. They didn’t win because Brazil played bad, they won because they played with sense.

Love this man – but frankly love Neymar a lil more!!
I wanted to watch the Ned vs Arg match and planned to take a power nap before the match. I somehow forgot to set an alarm for the match and ended up waking at 6 in the morning with the usual alarm!!! Now that ARG are through now its Euro vs Lat Am football. And guess what both are my teams – as in my favorites! I am placing my bet on Germany – they are in awesome form. Who are you rooting for on July 14??

100 Word Story – Prayer from the Underground

by Tina Basu July 8, 2014
written by Tina Basu

So non-stop writing it is this month. And I am practically writing everyday and not just posting. Sometimes I really want to write 3-4 post at one go and keep publishing them each day but I don’t think I’ll succeed in that, it’s difficult to have so many ideas at the same time and also be different from each other. And I do not have that much of time either. I am blogging from work!!

Anyways, today is a 100 word story – short and sweet, well I don’t know how sweet it is though!

Enjoy my earlier short fictions here.

Prayer from the Underground

He felt Cindy had completely lost it. She was trying to go against nature but Rob was determined to stop her… even if that meant leaping into this danger.

He drove at 75 mph but couldn’t see her truck anywhere.

He heard the repeated tornado alerts on the transistor but Cindy was nowhere around.

A glance on his side mirror gave a chill down his spine.

He drove his truck down the highway into the fields till he reached the shattered house.

Sitting in the underground tunnel he prayed for Cindy… he hoped she’d reach a safe tunnel in time.

I was extremely tempted to use this photo!

FIFA World Cup – Dilemma of a football fan – Germany or Brazil?

by Tina Basu July 7, 2014
written by Tina Basu

If you have been following Fifa World Cup and were rooting for teams like Brazil, Germany & Argentina then you are in the same boat as I am. You must be as confused as I am or must be as pissed off as I am.

First semi between Germany & Brazil! I love Klose, Muller as much as I love Neymar, T Silva, Julio Cesar and now I am in this difficult situation of choosing between them. How I hate this grouping system. And on top that poor lil Neymar is injured.

I am thinking of the situation if we have Brazil & Argentina for finals!!! In that case I will choose Brazil no doubt, because they have played much better than Argies this season. But I am more tensed for the semi between Brazil & Germany. One of the toughest for football fans, for sure.

The French conspiracy paid off and they got Neymar out in the hospital. And I know a lot of people (specially on my FB list) who think Brazil rests upon the 22 year old forward genius and that he is out Brazil has lesser chances. But I think otherwise, unlike Argentina – who are only and only banking upon Messi – Brazil has it in them to lift the cup, with or without Neymar. But Neymar dear – get well soon, after Brazil it’s Barca who needs you.

Best Wishes and prayers for you super hero – Get well soon

Moreover, if you are in India or the Indian subcontinent they you’ll be cursing the timezone like me. All semis star at 1:30 am and they are on weekdays. So practically you are awake at the wee hours and then have to be at work on time. I wish I could bunk work on Wednesday! But I know I can’t, how I pitty myself. What if we have a declared holiday on July 14th, for all the football fans!! That would be nice isn’t it?

P.S. Did I tell you I got my very own Germany jersey?? In fact, it was a gift, and incase you want one before tomorrow’s match head towards Adidas!!!

Who are you supporting in the semis??? Tell me in a comment below.

Short Fiction – That Morning Walk

by Tina Basu July 7, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Hello people, this UBC is doing quite good to me, it is making blogging and writing a habit than a hobby! I am infact, happy that I am in the second week of the challenge without missing a single day! And I am reading such good content, so much talent around makes you push yourself a little harder.

Okay, I made a little page called Blogs for Bloggers, do check it out. You might get some useful links, some awesome posts and some super sites for a blog hop party!

Going with the Blog hops, today’s post is for one such site. I am writing a short fiction today on word prompts. Here you go.

You can red my earlier short fictions here.

That Morning Walk

Nirvan was back in his village after two decades. He would have stayed out of this place had his father not passed away.

Not much had changed in this village – the poor roads, poor transport connection, poor electricity.  Villagers still didn’t want a girl child and felt her birth in a family brought bad luck.

He hoped this one week will pass by soon without any incident and he can be back at the city.

However, his family was visiting his ancestral village or the first time. His teen aged daughter was awestruck to see the lush green sugarcane fields and the beautiful moist breeze, something that she had never experienced in her polluted and crowded city.

She loved taking the long walks by the lake in the morning along with her brother. Nirvan was not happy with this idea, but this morning, seated in the police station, he wished he had set down some rules for his daughter, much against his wishes or values.

His daughter was abducted by three men this morning and her brother beaten up when he resisted. While waiting for the officer to turn up, Nirvan felt so insignificant, so helpless. He kept praying for his daughter’s safety. The beetle-leaf chewing officer hardly lent an ear to him. He was instead asked to meet the ‘Panchayat’ [village head man] head.

While at the headman’s house Nirvan noticed, his thirteen year old boy behaved odd in front of the headman’s son. Nirvan tried speaking to his son, he tried hard if Nimit could divulge any thing… anything that could help him get back his daughter.

Pointing towards the headman’s son Nimit started howling, in a way that took everyone by surprise. Nirvan felt, there was something to do with this fellow. Nimit revealed he was one of them… one of the boys who had held his sister this morning.

The headman tried resisting the police raid using all his powers but Nirvan and his family was determined to get back their daughter. Nirvan sweared, once he got back his daughter, he will never put his foot in this godless land. He was better off in the city. But his hope was short lived, his world came crashing down when the police recovered a violated and mutilated body of Nisha from the store room.
