100 Word Story – The newly wedded Husband

by Tina Basu July 22, 2014
written by Tina Basu

She called for help but none was around.

Her heart had just one question – ETHAN…. how is he?
She gathered the courage, in spite of her pain, to pick herself up and walk to the next room.
What lay behind the doors sent a chill down her spine.

There was her Ethan… her love… her newly wedded husband…
Only now he was trapped in numerous tubes.
Ethan took his last breath knowing she was safe.
Novie’s life faded away even before she had started.
Why did they have to drive so fast… why did He slash their honeymoon so short?

Flash Fiction – The cozy seat

by Tina Basu July 21, 2014
written by Tina Basu

This place felt safe.

It was warm in this otherwise cold and damp place.

The seat was cozy, he managed to pull out a rag and made himself cozy.

He hoped no one found him here… he wanted to get some sleep. He had not caught on some sleep in last few days… he never got the opportunity.

Shifting places, hiding from the security… Jarrod was now tired.

He hoped no one got to him.

Ever since he found out this parking area, Jarrod felt this was a better place to hide.

He was tired of hiding and was on a constant run. He just wanted to rest. All he needed was three more days… three more days to arrive at his land of dreams. Being a stowaway in a ship was no easy feat.

Book Review – The Sales Room by R.T. Manu Ramesh

by Tina Basu July 20, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Okay taking a break from fiction writing – just for a day though. I have to put up this book review, and there is one more which will follow in a few days. I received The Sales Room a few days back. Though the title sounded like some hardcore business book – which gives you an idea of numbers or stats or pie charts (as most of us – who work in such organizations- relate all of these with the word SALES), the synopsis was interesting. Now that I am done with it, let’s see how this Sales Room is.

The Story

Rajesh Iyer, a young sales professional who drops out mid-way from a US business school. He returns to his old work place – Oregon Software Technologies – which previously was a non descriptive software start-up. This time he is back at a lesser salary but to a new posh workplace. During his new stint he discovers the previously enthusiastic and dynamic work environment has turned into days laced with swears, screams, grunts et all.  Rajesh now can either start buttering the CEO Venky (read licking @$$) and become a part of the sham or quit. He encounters various funny characters and many events take place during the course of his stint.

My Thoughts

If you are a part of a sales organization (like me) you will get the below the belt punches very easily. This satire is for all of those people who were, are or might be in the world of sales and clients. This makes you laugh and sometimes makes you relate your work place to the situations or experiences you may say. Now I have not been a part of a startup- so I don’t know what you feel like being there, but I am sure it won’t be very different! I had a wide grin as I read through.

The Sales Room throws an honest and ironic light at the ethics of management in a startup. Actually I should mention the Indian start – up. This ‘juggad’attitude is in the breaths of Indians and almost every organization derives some benefit from it!

The narrative is very fluid and easy, and the puns are in your face. It has a good amount of profanity [which again you get used to, or rather is normal in modern day work place]. Actually sometimes I felt, if this was n the backdrop of an advertising firm then it could have a swear word twice in every sentence!!! But sometimes it gets too much for a female reader and didn’t get down too well for me.

I like how the characters are built, but I like how the author has offered a new experience and twists in each chapter. The story line takes you from Bangalore, the IT hub, to Delhi and you come across various funny characters.

About The Author

R.T. Manu Ramesh, is a techie himself working for a MNC in San Jose California. This is his maiden novel. He has been part of building up a startup himself so I have no doubt why he could deliver such a satire.  You can read more about him at his website.

My Rating – I’ll give it a 3.5. It’s hilarious and while you read you can so relate to the situations.

100 Word Story – I’ll not Spare you

by Tina Basu July 19, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Ohh you have finally come… I have been waiting… just for you.

Count your days Anderson Jr, I won’t let you stay here for long.

I have not let anyone.

You and your father didn’t care about me, you never heard my cry, my plea…

It was a fun Sunday outing for you two… but what about me??

You made me a show piece on your wall… and then dumped me at this corner in the store room.

I have waited for twelve years… a soul trapped in this body…

I didn’t spare your dad… now I won’t spare you.

100 Word Story – Secret Admirer

by Tina Basu July 18, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Does it happen to you sometimes when you are so tired after work that you just come home, eat and go off to sleep? I did the same some time back. But in the middle of my sound sleep I woke up and remembered I had not put up a post for the UBC!!!

First I thought – ohh let it be, i better get back to sleep…. and then the better part of the brain asked – do you really want to give up on the challenge? And the answer that it gave was obviously NO.

So waking up in the middle of the night to write a fiction. And here you go. Its about quarter past one now in the night and I am half asleep, I’ll read and check for spellings when I am in a better condition!

Secret Admirer

He noticed her everyday… same time… same place.

She always took this particular bus… there was something about her that’s so different from the rest at the bus stop.

She had a certain calm across her face… everyday. She stared at the road and looked oblivious of her surroundings – that’s what made her more beautiful… to Rehman.

Today he was determined he would speak to her.

His whispers from behind didn’t work… nor did the whistling… he wondered why she didn’t react?

He noticed her hearing aid only when she turned to get into the bus… was it not working??

Five Sentence Fiction – Standing in the Rain

by Tina Basu July 17, 2014
written by Tina Basu

She stood still like a stone…. Trying to absorb what just happened.

She looked at them down at her feet… lying helpless… lifeless… but she felt indifferent today.

These were the very people who dared to violate her… repeatedly… day after day… was it her fault that she was born in a family of laborer and them in a higher caste?

She didn’t think of consequences today… she didn’t trust in the police anymore… she took reigns in her own hands when they pounced on her today… it was not the sickle, she realized she got the power from her courage… from her want to lead a life of dignity.

Standing alone in the raintoday, she felt calm, she felt the almighty washing away the dirt… she felt pure again.
