Flash Fiction – What would she do now?

by Tina Basu August 20, 2014
written by Tina Basu
So it’s fiction time today

Victoria felt morose, miserable, and felt like letting out a scream.

This is not what she had expected. Her job was no more, the company had laid off 100 employees in a single day. These were the difficult times. Every other day people were getting laid off.

But there was something else on her mind. How will she pay her bills? Her credit card bills had shot up over thousands of dollars. How would she repay?

“Ohh… why am I such an impulsiveshopper?? Why did I buy all those things? What do I do now?” she asked herself.

She checked her account on her smart phone and saw she only had a sparse savings which could sustain her for a month.

What would she do now?

Five Sentence Fiction – The Weekend Escapade

by Tina Basu August 18, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Hello there, after a week of being all lazy and free back in Kolkata, I am here in the ‘karmbhoomi’ in the routine life. Duh… How boring. Anyways now since I am blogging from my laptop, I thought of checking for my prompts. And here it is the Five Sentence Fiction Prompt.

So here you go.

The Weekend Escapade

For Janet, one of the perks of being a expat in Mumbai was the weekend escapades.

Today she was out in her new SUV towards this green village that she had read about online.

But, like other times this trip was not going smooth, she looked tired and exhausted in the May heat but she had no other options.

It’s been three hours that she has been waiting but no one had reached there.

“Damn you IOS Maps, I swear I’ll never use you again, this isn’t even a motorable road and now for you my new car is damaged… where the hell are these service guys!!!!” Janet sighed as she waited for the mechanics from the town to reach the spot.

Airport conversations

by Tina Basu August 17, 2014
written by Tina Basu
I often get into this observant mode when I am travelling. Today I have been closely observing people and their conversations at the airport. Of you were here you could listen to three general conversations in groups or phone or between a mom and son.

1. “Khawa dawa thik kore korish” (eat well) told a dad to his son just outside the entrance. No wonder everyone says a Bengali person thinks about food first and then anything else on earth.

2. “Nijer kheyal rekho, mach tach pele kheyo, shabdhane theko” (take care of yourself, eat fish if you get any, stay carefully) told a teary eyed mom bidding adieu to her son. Mom’s become a little extra emotional at airports and train stations. My mom is no different and always has moist eyes every time she comes to see me off.

3. “Mon kharap koro na, jete to hobei“, told the girl on phone, sitting next to me at the departure lounge. Which means, don’t feel upset, I had to go,no other option.

Now these are some regular conversations probably, but what makes you sit and think is the population of people travelling away from this city or state to other states for work! That population is astounding. In Bangalore alone there is an enormous population of Bengalis – all bright students working in private sector. All away from their family from their hometown because the politicians in their home state have not left any option for them. They are living in some Stone Age and is content with the city’s past glory. They create ruckus when some one wants to invest in the state and set up a factory and instead is just happy with bringing ShahRukh Khan for festivals, or winning IPL. The state heads are busy with the film stars and artistes than thinking about creating jobs for the youth. They can’t get Indian industries to invest in the state, but are flying to Singapore to get investment!!! Such is the apathy. But still it’s my city. And I am happy every time I am back. But will the youth stay silent as always and migrate somewhere else? That’s something to ponder off.

Finally my flight is ready to board. So signing off. See you tomorrow.

The Shoe & Handbag Fetish

by Tina Basu August 16, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Girls have two weaknesses generally- all girls like me – 1. Shoes 2. Handbags and almost always in that same order of preference.

I go a little weak in my knees every time I cross a Jimmy Choo or a Tods showroom – and it remains till only the entrance. I still don’t have that mindset to shell out half a lakh for a pair of shoes.
Today while on a shopping trip with mom I came across a Gucci showroom and saw quite a lot of good ‘bagwatis’. Well for the records I do have a Jimmy Choo bagwati which my mom had gifted me. Anyways, the price tags on the Gucci darlings were quite eventful which in turn made my trip inside the store uneventful.
I wish I would be in a mindset to pick one up someday but till then I managed a Gucci Selfie. I should be content with it till then.
Do you also get crazy about shoes and handbags?
P.S. I am looking little wierd in the last pic. I was instructing my mom how to frame the pic. So it’s not quite a selfie.

Undying spirit of people in the cultural capital

by Tina Basu August 15, 2014
written by Tina Basu

Most of you would know I’m here in Kolkata for a week. I’ve taken such an impromptu mid year break after a pretty long time. So I’m blogging a lot on Kolkata and Bengali culture lately. Since I’m doing everything from the iPhone I am not posting long posts. I’ll edit the posts once I’m back. I’m feeling so lazy that I don’t want to take out the laptop.

I have not been in this city during 15 Aug for about 8 years so was not quite in touch with the celebrations. But this time I’m observing silently what people are doing and why is culture so important in here.
How many times have you seen or heard regional patriotic songs in loud speakers? Many??? Then read this – every other locality, local club, association have organized special programs on Independence Day – complete with flag hoisting, patriotic songs, dance, recitation of poetry, drawing competitions and what not. These are apart from the school programs.
Monsoon particularly is a little bad in here. Today it has been raining constantly from afternoon. I was out for most part of the day at a relative’s place and while coming back at about 8 in the night you could still hear the loudspeakers in main road playing Bengali patriotic songs.
Be it rain, heat or any damn thing there is no compromise on the celebrations. And for a change I felt very nice, for the atmosphere created here. If this was a day in Bangalore we would have participated in the flag hoisting ceremony in our complex and then retire for the day to relax, watch parade on TV or may be away at any destination for the long weekend.
An Independence Day spent well among family and friends. It’s great to be in my city.
