A to Z of Skincare – AHAs are skin friendly acids that helps you get glowing skin.
Hello everyone, this year I am taking part in the A to Z Challenge with A to Z of skincare, because over last few years I have realised this form of self-care is way more important than trying to make everyone happy! Ok the first day let me start with some stalwart ingredients of skincare – AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acids.
A to Z of skincare – AHA for Skin
AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids are natural and synthetic compounds that are commonly used in skincare products.
AHAs have become increasingly popular in the skincare community because they are known for their ability to exfoliate the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and promote a more even skin tone. In this article, we will explore the many benefits of incorporating AHAs into your skincare routine.
What Are Alpha Hydroxy Acids?
Alpha hydroxy acids are a group of water-soluble acids typically derived from fruits, milk and sugar cane. AHAs include glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid and citric acid. As chemical exfoliants, AHAs dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, resulting in the removal of damaged skin cells and revealing smoother and brighter skin underneath.
Benefits of AHAs
1. Exfoliation – removal of dead skin cells, promoting the growth of a new layer of skin that looks brighter, smoother and healthier.
2. Treats Fine Lines and Wrinkles – Regular use of AHAs can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting collagen synthesis, which increases the elasticity of the skin.
3. Improved Skin Texture – AHAs help to smooth out rough patches of skin and help promote an even skin tone.
4. Treatment of Hyperpigmentation – Hyperpigmentation can be caused by sun damage or hormones, but AHAs can help fade dark spots and prevent further damage by inhibiting the production of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color).
5. Treats Acne – AHAs can improve acne-prone skin by reducing oil production and preventing the buildup of dead skin cells that can clog pores.
Products to use that contains AHAs?
This blog series is not going to focus on product recommendation. But I am trying to share some skincare knowledge with you guys.
You can choose any face serum that contains AHAs. But here are some tips you need to follow to find the right product for your skin.
1. Choose the right product for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin read the labels and product description on the packaging.
2. Choose a lower concentration of AHA, because afterall it’s a chemical, though considered a good chemical or skin-friendly chemical by dermatologists across the world. 10% -20% concentration AHA serums work best for the skin.
Some of the products that I have tried are from brands called The Ordinary, DermaCo, Pilgrim, Chemist at Play. You can choose anything that suits your skin and liking
What Should You Consider When Using AHAs?
1. Start slow – AHAs can potentially cause irritation and sensitivity, so start with a lower concentration and work your way up to a higher concentration.
2. Use sunscreen – AHAs can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s essential to wear sunscreen to avoid sun damage.
3. Be consistent – Like any skincare routine, consistency is key. For best results, incorporate AHAs into your routine a few times a week.
In conclusion, AHAs are a powerful addition to any skincare routine. They can improve the overall appearance of the skin by exfoliating dead skin cells, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, promoting an even skin tone and treating hyperpigmentation. It’s crucial to start slow and be consistent, and always wear sunscreen when using AHAs. With regular use, your skin can look brighter, smoother, and healthier.
