Flu vaccine – Is it necessary? All you need to know about Flu Vaccines

flu vaccine

Flu vaccine is the only way to fight against influenza. Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body which provides protection against the influenza virus.

We are always worried about our kid’s health. All a mom wants is for her child to be healthy and safe. But we can’t escape seasonal changes or health complications that arise from these changes. Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and can be fatal.

Do Not Take Flu-related fever lightly

We don’t tend to take fevers in kids seriously and think it will pass, it’s regular. But flu is always not just an inconvenience it can get serious and fatal. Some time back I was reading a mom’s message where she was urging people to be more aware of Influenza and its vaccines, after losing her two-year-old boy to this disease.

Does my kid fall sick often? Yes, all kids have fever!

Schools, playgrounds are breeding places for viruses. Kids do catch a cold and cough and then fever. My son catches a cold twice a month sometimes. It is worrying for a mom because with a blocked nose and coughs their food schedule goes for a toss. Is it inconvenient? Of course, it is, but you have to deal with it and let the child recover.

My doctor always recommends, to let the child recover completely before sending him back to school. Kids missing school isn’t just a problem with their attendance. Today, we live in a nuclear setup with both parents working. Getting leaves on account of your child being sick, is difficult. So we are always in a hurry to send them back to school after two days of fever. I am a work from home mom, it is inconvenient for me too when my son is not attending school and being at home. But these are things we moms need to realize – what is more important? Of course, the well-being of the child. At the back of my mind, I am relieved somewhere that he is vaccinated.

Why Flu vaccine is necessary?

The spread of flu typically picks up in October to November. The only way to prevent influenza is through vaccination. Australia alone saw 300,000 patients affected with flu this year.

Last time my son was sick and I was at the doctor’s, she asked if his immunization was up to date. When I said yes, she asked when was the last time I gave him the flu shot. I asked her, why is it necessary to give the vaccine every year. According to her, the influenza viruses keep changing and the vaccines have to be changed every year.

She said, around October every year the new booster doses of the vaccines are available in the market. So the right time to give the influenza vaccine is the end of October and November, every year.

Prevention today is better than worry tomorrow

While it is important you get your child, yourself and the elderlies to get vaccinated, practice some good habits on cleanliness and hygiene at home. Washing hands frequently, staying home if you have fever or cold, covering your mouth and nose while sneezing – all help in preventing you from coming in contact with the virus directly.

Let us come together and make it a safer environment for our kids. #IPromiseToStopFlu
