3 Types of Friends you are Thankful For #ThankfulThursdays Week 27

by tinabasu May 26, 2017
written by tinabasu

We meet people and we make friends. Some friends stay for life some for weeks and some we don’t even want to remember! I have made very good friends over the last three decades that I managed on this planet! Some of these friendships are from school, some from college, some from staying together. I have made many friends while working as well. Yes some colleagues can turn friends of life. And I have made great friends through my blog and my online life. What are the types of friends you come across in your life? I have both crazy friends and sober friends and I love them all. Let’s find out the 3 types of friends I have in my life that I am thankful for.

types of friends

Types of Friends #1 – The one who is your confidante

A friend with whom you can share everything – secrets, boy talks (problems), rather life in general. This friend is your guiding star and you look forward to their opinions and they have a big part in your decision making. I am this kind of a confidante for a few, though, but let’s keep that for some other time. I am thankful I have some of these girls whom I can confide to with anything weird happening in life (or inside my head, most of the time)

Type of Friends #2 – The one who is crazy AF like you

Just like how you need one to confide in, you also need those crazy friends who share your craziness for things. That kind of friend who are always ready to be partner in crimes, that kind of friend who doesn’t think twice before jumping into something with you. I have told you how I vanished for a girl’s trip before my marriage. At one time I had made a plan of a weekend Bangkok trip with one of my girls when I was still in college without anyone’s knowledge! *hopefully my mom dad are not reading this* But it didn’t materialize somehow. But I like my friends who can be crazy willingly

Type of Friends #3 – The one from the opposite sex

I think I get along with guys a little better than girls, well that was the situation in college and university! I have many friends from the opposite sex who are my friends for life and we are still quite together though we don’t live in the same city. I have made good friends at work too one of whom is as close as a brother and I can drive him crazy at times. He can also tell me to shut up when I *supposedly* am eating his head unnecessarily!

So what are the types of friends you have in your life that you are thankful for? Share it with us and get some community love back on this #thankfulThursdays Week. Add your blog post links in the linky below and we’ll visit you.

10 Best Gifts for New Moms

by tinabasu May 23, 2017
written by tinabasu

A new mom needs as much attention as a new baby. While planning gifts for new moms keep in mind the utility of the gift. Here are 10 Best gift ideas for new moms.

Between diaper changes, feeding, burping and sleepless nights the life of a new mom goes from a waiting-to-embrace motherhood to being a walking talking zombie! Yes, motherhood especially the first month is tough for a new mom – to get accustomed to the new routine, to repeated sleepless nights – a new mom needs attention as much as the new baby. A new baby in family warrants multiple visits from relatives and friends and along with them comes endless gifts. While planning to buy gifts for new moms or new babies look for the utility and practicality of the gift. Don’t just pick up a gift for the sake of gifting.

Here are 10 Best Gifts for New Moms that will help you in deciding better

gifts for mew moms

Towel Set

With a new baby in home there’s an urgent need for baby towels, these towels are a savior when a baby is throwing up, splitting milk, during bath time, during nappy change – practically at any given time. There can never be a situation when you have adequate towels. Baby towel sets are one of the best gifts for new moms that she can use even as the baby grows.

Stylish Diaper Bag

Once you become a mom you don’t have a choice but to trade your totes and sling bags with these giant diaper bags to pack the entire baby paraphernalia even if you were to visit the grocery store! Most of the diaper bags are boring. But things are changing now. Gift a new mom a stylish diaper bag, big enough to carry diapers, bottles, baby’s change of clothes but stylish enough to pair up with her outfit. You can also gift a diaper backpack which is extremely convenient. A cross body multifunctional tote is way more practical and stylish than a regular colossal diaper bag.

Baby Milestone Book

The first few months of a new mom is all about checking (and worrying) if her baby is achieving the milestones on time. Gift a baby milestone book which she can update with dates, notes and photos – when the baby first smiled, or first turned or simply slept through the night.

Online shopping Gift Card

It is natural you want to get cute little infant dresses for the new baby, but gifting clothes for newborns can be little difficult. However, for a new mom it is equally daunting to go shopping for the baby. Gift an online shopping gift card or gift voucher and help her shop for her baby. Get an Amazon or First Cry or Hopscotch gift card that she can use to get clothes and other baby related stuff.

Nursing Pillow

Breastfeeding a baby is a mammoth task, it is tiresome for a new mom to sit for hours and feed the infant and then put the baby on shoulder to make him burp. This worsens if the baby decides not to co-operate. The nursing pillows or U shaped pillows helps to support the baby’s weight properly and makes nursing easier.

Nursing Clothes

Comfortable nursing clothes are great gifts for new moms. Breathable nursing clothes with front zippers or covers are very helpful for the mom.

Baby Feeding Bottle Set

If you are aware that the mom is formula friendly or is mix feeding the baby i.e. breastfeeding and topping up with formula then you can gift a feeding bottle set. For maintaining good hygiene one needs to change bottles and teats quite frequently, every month precisely. If you are getting a feeding bottle set look for BPA free bottles with anti-colic silicone teats. You could also look for glass bottles with silicone teats.

Newborn Baby Toys

Toys help newborn kids in developing their motor skills. Babies love watching the ceiling fan rotating. Gifting musical hanging toys that can be fixed on the crib or on the pram is a good idea. Baby gym with a mattress and hanging toys are ideal gifts for new moms and new babies.

baby gym

A Spa Day

New moms are stressed out – post-delivery healing, new baby’s routine, no rest and sleepless nights reduce new moms to nothing less than a zombie. Going out to a spa or having a me-time is like a farfetched dream. Book a home spa day for the new mom where a masseuse or salon professional can come to her home and pamper her with a back massage or a pedicure.

You Might Like : Gift mom a Rejuvinating Spa Session at Home

Toiletry hamper for new mom

People tend to pick up the biggest toiletry hamper for babies once a baby is born but gifting toiletries to babies without reading the label carefully can be harmful. Newborn babies are allergic to scented lotions or soaps, and many brands have parabens in their products so its best you let the mom make the choice of the brand and products she wants to use for her baby. Instead, things like stretch mark lotions and body massage oils for the mom are great gifts for the new mom.

While everyone is celebrating the new baby, spare some time for the new mom as well. Motherhood is cherishing but it is a colossal task too. While the gifts for new moms will make them happy they’ll perhaps be happiest if you don’t judge them for their choices and help a new mom by spending some time with her and sharing some of her load.

10 Tips for Planning your Dream Destination Wedding #OneWeddingWish

by tinabasu May 19, 2017
written by tinabasu

Every girl has a special dream about her wedding. It is your special day. It is that one day when you want to feel like the most important person on earth, it is one day when you want to feel like that princess from the fairy tale you liked in your childhood. What has been your dream about your wedding – a grand reception, an exotic honeymoon or a destination wedding? Whatever your wish is it is important you get a chance to fulfill that dream about your wedding. It is one of those once in a lifetime experience which you do not want to miss out.

Destination wedding is the latest trend among young couples. It doesn’t matter if you are the travel lover or not, a destination wedding is more relaxing, gives you moments to enjoy. They say marriages are made in heaven but you have every right to celebrate and enjoy it here! Here are 10 Tips to Plan your dream destination wedding.

tips for planning a dream destination wedding

#1 Choose a meaningful location of your destination wedding

Which is that one place that means a lot to you? Which kind of destination wedding would you like -a beach wedding, a princess like a wedding in a palace, a tropical wedding in Goa or Bali or a romantic gateway in Tuscany, Italy or an iconic luxurious wedding at La Maison des Centraliens, in Paris? Whichever be your favorite destination choose it well – one that you will cherish forever in your life. If you want to ditch the Wedding Planner and go DIY, choose a hotel/resort that can offer you a package and meet all the requirements of your wedding. Most resorts will be able to offer you or connect you to the local third parties for decorations, music, transport etc.

#2 Visit in advance and do your own recce

Visit the location, resort in advance before booking the venue. After all its your money and you should be on top of all the details of your wedding. This will give you a clearer picture of the wedding venue, guest capacity. Arrive at least 2-3 days before the wedding to do the final checks and get a hair and makeup trial.

#3 Embrace Local Flavor to Save Big

You can use local flavor in decorations and save big on your budget. Use local tropical flowers at a beach wedding decoration or olive branches if you chose to get married in the romantic weathers of Italy. Gift local specialties and souvenirs to guests have some local delicacy in your menu.

local flower decoration

#4 Consider the weather

Choose summer, spring or winter for your wedding. Check in advance what the local weather will be like. You don’t want torrential rains of the tropics to ruin your outdoor wedding.

#5 Consider your guest

Indian weddings are a perfect picture of relations, guests. While you can invite the world at a wedding in your hometown, take a detailed look at the guest list while planning your destination wedding. Try putting your guests at one single affordable and reasonable hotel, if not at the same place you are put up. If cost is an issue, find affordable place 10 mins away from the venue and arrange transport for movement. Don’t send your save the dates till you can guarantee the availability of the rooms for all your guests.

#6 Choose a Wedding Dress according to your destination

If you are having a wedding at a tropical destination try considering breathable fabric for your wedding. Indian weddings tend to have many rituals and you are expected to change dresses frequently. The wedding ritual itself takes a considerable amount of time. Wearing heavily woven fabric, heavy jewelry day long in a tropical climate can be difficult. Look for light breathable fabric with embellishments to up the glamour quotient.

#7 Don’t check-in your Bridal Trousseau

Always carry your bridal trousseau with yourself inside the cabin while you are flying for your destination wedding. You don’t want to be in a situation where your wedding dress has not arrived at your destination. You wouldn’t want to stress yourself out at any cost.

#8 Get a good Wedding Photographer

Instead of getting a local wedding photographer, fly your appointed photographer to your wedding. A wedding is that once in a lifetime moment which you will relive through the photos for years. You need a photographer you can trust. Get a glamorous pre-wedding and post-wedding photo shoot done at iconic places at your destination.

#9 Plan your honeymoon

No wedding is complete without your dream honeymoon. If you are flying out for a honeymoon at some other destination plan it from this location itself to save on cost.

#10 Manage Finances & Funds

Weddings don’t come cheap – no matter where you are deciding to have it. But it’s a lifetime affair. Plan and manage your finances for your destination wedding like a pro. For Indian parents, wedding is one of the biggest duties and they save through their life to make their daughters weddings a lavish affair. But weddings are not just the responsibility of your parents. Youngsters contribute for their own wedding as well. Your wedding is your dream and everyone should get a chance to live that dream. Now you have finance companies offering Wedding Loans to turn your wedding dream into reality.

Tata Capital offers a Wedding Loan at an attractive interest rate of 11.49% onwards with quick disbursal. Visit Tata Capital Wedding Loan Website to apply and fill in relevant details, along with the wedding wish. After a careful analysis of your profile, Tata Capital will process your loan.

So girl, say your “I Do” in style without getting too worried about the finances. Don’t let your dream of exchanging your vows on a beach or an exquisite destination wedding photoshoot remain in dreams. Plan well and turn it into a reality.

3 Better Ways to Say Thank You #ThankfulThursday

by tinabasu May 19, 2017
written by tinabasu

Do you remember the lessons you were taught in nursery school? “Please say thank you” were repeated most often. And we obviously learned that well – saying Thank you and welcome. By the time we turned teens and a little later, the entire thank you business would have turned upside down! I am no stranger to that. But once you are a little older in your mid-twenties and have grown some brains you realize the power of the word Thank You.

Thank you is a potent word. Its effect is immediate. Saying thank you doesn’t make you smaller or less important. It ca have some dramatic impact on people. Did you know ‘Thank You’ triggers feel good hormones! So have you said Thank You today?

Are you wondering how to say thank you to your parents, to your partner or to your boss may be (if you say yes to this you have a great boss)? Here are some tips for you – three ways to say thank you.

3 ways to say thank you

#1 How to Say Thank you – Pick up the phone

pick up phone

Yes pick up the phone and go to your phone book or dial the number. Not Whatsapp or Viber, no message – call you parents or friends. Even better if you Skype or Facetime to say thank you. Thank your parents for putting sense in you. Thank a friend for being there with you when someone else was not there.

Your direct words have more impact than your multiple Whatsapp. Don’t have an apprehension to make that call. These days’ people call less and send a text more, but words spoken are golden.

#2 How to Say Thank You – Look into the Eyes

eye contact friends thank you

Just like your words are golden, your presence is just as wonderful. If you want to thank, meet in person, look into eyes and say a thank you firmly. It shows the warmth in you, it also shows your confidence. This is specially good when you need to thank your loved ones or even your colleagues for that matter.

When thanking people at your workplace, say it with a firm handshake. Actions speak louder than words. Your body language conveys a message better than what you actually say. A firm handshake conveys your confidence and “I really appreciate that” conveys a formal gratitude. A combination of it makes it a great thank you.

#3 How to Say Thank You – Write your feelings

write thank you

A thank you note, a thank you email, a thank you card, a thank you letter speaks volumes. They are also keepsakes and will remain with the other person for a lifetime (unless they really hate you inside!) Write a thank you note to your wife today, thank her for taking care of her work, taking care of her family and the house.

So it doesn’t matter if you say a Thank You or a Danke or a Xie Xie, say it from the heart and see a positive vibe travel between your friend and yourself. Why are you waiting Say Thank You.

That brings us back to our exciting #ThankfulThursday. Tell us Your 3 ways to Say Thank You.  The links are open for an entire week – which means you can link up till Wednesday night 23:55 IST.

Understanding Micronutrient Deficiency – A Macro Problem in India

by tinabasu May 14, 2017
written by tinabasu

What are the important aspects of growth in a child? Physical growth, brain development, strong immunity and emotional wellbeing are the major components of growth in a child.  In India, mothers are generally bothered about the physical growth of a child and not the overall brain development and immunity levels. But is that the right choice to make? Regular diets in majority of Indian households is rich in macronutrients like carbohydrates, fats and proteins, supporting only physical growth but they lack in micronutrient, which is necessary for overall mental and brain development.                                                               micronutrient deficiency

For a child the results of nutrient deficiencies to set in at an early age but the nutritional deficiency is difficult to detect for a mother – the child may look physically fit but still have nutrient deficiency.

What are the important Micronutrients?

Micronutrients like Iron, Calcium, Vitamins, and Minerals play an important role in building a baby’s immunity against major infections. The consequences of micronutrient deficiency among infants can be of a greater magnitude.

A nutrient deficient child faces chances of greater morbidity due to

  1. diarrheal infection
  2. viral infections
  3. measles
  4. reduced vaccine responses
  5. impaired growth, and development

Doctors in India opine there is a huge gap in the knowledge about the role of micronutrient in building immunity. Let’s take a closer look at micronutrients and their benefits.

What are Micronutrients? Little Things Matter

Micronutrients are a group of nutrients which are required in trace amounts for normal growth and development of a child. Micronutrient deficiency is often referred to as “Hidden Hunger” because it develops gradually over time, their devastating impact not seen until it leaves behind irreversible damage in a child’s life. Millions of children suffer from stunted growth, cognitive delays, weakened immunity and infections as a result of micronutrient deficiencies. That is why Primary food needs to be nutrition dense as the need for nutrients are not fulfilled by mother’s milk after 6 months, making infants susceptible to nutritional deficiency.

Pediatrics highlight that Iron deficiency in infants is linked to impaired cognition, needs attention in early years of life

Nutritional iron deficiency arises when physiological requirements cannot be met by iron absorption from normal diet. Infants are at high risk due to their rapid growth and limited dietary sources. In India, iron deficiency is highest (49.5%) among children in the age group of 6-23 months. Studies have shown that Indian children aged 1-3 years consume only one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for iron. Iron plays a very important role in a baby’s brain development and cognition, and iron and zinc help in the development of baby’s immunity.

90% of brain develops in the first 1000 days. Mild iron deficiency in the first 1000 days can also lead to impaired cognitive function in a child’s later life.  Lack of the right kind of nutrition that meets all their requirements for iron and other micronutrients may lead to irreversible damage to a child’s brain development. The magnitude of adverse effects on the developing brain is largely dictated by the timing and duration of iron deficiency.

Why is it important to act early on your child’s nutrition need?

Eating patterns built during childhood serve as a foundation for life. More than 1/3rd of child deaths occurring annually, around the world, are attributed to malnutrition, specifically under nutrition, which weakens the body’s resistance to illness.

As a mother it is our duty to ensure that our children are not malnourished and we provide wholesome nutrition not occasionally but daily. If a child is malnourished during the first 1000 days of life, the child’s physical and mental growth and development is slowed. This cannot be corrected when the child is older – it affects the child for the rest of his or her life.

Which kinds of food should you include in your child’s diet?

leafy vegetables fruits micronutrient rich

Include micronutrient-rich food in your child’s daily diet.

  1. Dark green vegetables and leafy vegetables – spinach is an excellent source of iron
  2. Dairy Products – milk, ghee, paneer, curd are good sources of calcium
  3. Fruits – are rich in antioxidants and vitamins
  4. Nuts – are powerhouses of energy. Include almonds, walnuts in daily snacks
  5. Fortified grains/foods

With micronutrients producing significant public health benefits, nutrition plays a vital role in the holistic development of a child. Moreover, good nutrition signifies a food which is a powerhouse of micronutrients.

On this Mother’s Day let’s pledge to never let your child be malnourished. It gets difficult with kids who are picky eaters. My son is a fussy eater and sometimes I conceal spinach, gourd with his food. He’s very fond of nuts because they are crunchy. The mother in me needs to find out smarter ways to go past the picky master!
